Not much difference in career between Grigor Dmitrov and Prince of Clay ?

8 titles
1 YEC
1 Masters

Thiem
Career High 3
17 titles ( 5 500's)
1 asterisk slam
1 Masters

Both look better than Raonic and Nishikori. Thiem reached 3 other major finals, but the result was never in doubt like when Andy Murray made the major finals.

The asterisk slam won by overcoming a 2 set deficit against a guy that went on to spank Djoker 10 months later in a tournament that means the most to him?

When Djokovic was down 2-1 in sets, result was very much in doubt
Thiem also has 2 Tour finals and 2 masters finals and has been consistently one of top players last 5 years and is 3 years younger.

Dimitrov had one short stint as no3, played Tour finals only once and that masters title is a laughable one, he beat Sugita, Isner and then Kyrgios in the final.
He also never made it past SF at a slam nor to any other masters final.

Dimitrov > Thiem on grass, definitely. 2014 Wimbledon was a very good performance from him even though he did lose to Djokovic.

Everything else I'd say Thiem pretty clearly even if he never plays another match.

Dimi has got those 2 big titles, but he's barely better than Rao and Nishi, who both have a slam final. Definitely not as good as Tim.

Lol no way they're close. Thiem has been way more consistent and won bigger matches against bigger players. That's all there is to it

There isn't much difference between 8 titles and 17?? A slam and an end of year finals?? 5 slam finals to 0??

Those are differences but negligible given the amount of 250's , clay skewed titles. Dmitrov YEC = asterisk slam. Thiem has 4 finals, 2 of which against Nadal were very pathetic performances.

We can nitpick and magnify differences, but if you were to categorize groups of players across tennis history, would you place Thiem in a different league than Dmitrov

no asterisk, dom won 7 matches just like all other major winners.
overcame all the mental / physical hurdles that go along with a 2 week major.

Yes. I would. I'm not saying Thiem is a world beater, but he's certainly a class up from Dimitrov. You keep referring to Thiem's slam as asterisked, but Dimitrov's YEC was a piece of crap too, in which all the real work was done by Goffin, and then he just picked off the pieces. I also wouldn't class Thiem's 2019 final against Nadal as a pathetic performance given the circumstances of it. It's arguably a superior performance to the final he won.:-D

No disrespect to Dimitrov. When he's on he was really great to watch, and a very effective player, but his periods of being on were far too sporadic. He's probably a better clay player than Thiem is a grass player when it comes to bottom ends, but that's about the only department I'd take him in with this comparison.

Thiem's career is better, but I'm more impressed with Grigor's best slam runs. The fights he gave at 2014 WB and 2017 AO top whatever Thiem has done. Thiem only has a slam and multiple slam finals due to luck of the draw and facing weaker versions of Djokodal.

Dimitrov's peaks are about as high as Thiem's, but he's simply much less consistent overall.

Look at the graphs. Dimitrov is a top 20-ish player, more or less...

...whereas Thiem cracked the top 10 in 2016, and has now been there for the last five years without interruption.

They are quite different kind of players. Dimitrov is old school, all the way back to McEnroe-Edberg era of chip and charge. Thiem has a fully modern game, more akin to Nadal than anyone else

Dimitrov won't win any Slam. Won't be a surprise if Thiem win a couple more, especially at RG.
