What are the notable examples of where Federer had to be clutch/fight through one match to then put himself in a position to choke?

Some that come to mind:

2006 Rome - had to win QF 7-5 in 3rd set and SF 7-6 in 3rd set to lose heartbreaking final to Nadal
2008 Wimbledon - Down Sets to Love in final fought back to lose heartbreaking final 9-7 in fifth set to Nadal.
2009 US Open final - Down a break in third set, fought back to win set, and then lose final in five sets to Del Potro
2009 Australian Open - Down 2 Sets to Love to Berdych in 4th Round to then lose heartbreaking final to Nadal
2011 French Open - played his most clutch match ever on clay to defeat Djokovic in semifinals and then lose to Nadal in final
2014 Monte Carlo - nearly lost to Tsonga in QF, and then lost final to Wawrinka
2014 Wimbledon - was down 2-5 in the fourth set of final to win fourth set and then lose final in five sets to Djokovic
2016 Australian - was down 2 sets to love to Cilic in QF to then choke 4th Set in Semifinal loss to Raonic
2018 Indian Wells - was down a set and a break to Coric in semifinals to then choke in final loss to Del Potro
2019 Wimbledon - played a clutch semifinal with tense moments to defeat Nadal in semifinals and then lose to Djokovic in final

And people laugh at me when I say Federer's best surface is clay. He wouldn't have half of those losses if they were held on clay, his level just goes up on the dirt, his return and back hand improve, and his slice on clay is arguably the best I've seen along with Coria.

I agree with your list except for this match because this wasn't a choke. Even had Fed not choked the drop shot on SP in the first set, he would not have gone on to defeat Nadal that day. If it lasted five sets, he would never have been able to outplay Rafa on Chatrier after 4 hours. Every other match you list was a choke of either moderate (Raonic 2016-- very moderate) or huge proportions. Good thread topic.

Also within the 2019 Wimbledon final itself, won set 4 , broke Novak in 5th and had 2 MPs, then also after blowing those had 2 BPs at 11-11 which Novak saved both by skin of his teeth.

So, ¿he wins that tight matches because he is clutch, but at the same time he has those heartbreaking losses because he is a choker?
It sounds fair!
