Nothing has changed. Even though TTW is doing the usual Armageddon on the big 3, everything is still status quo.

Look at the year.

• Rafa finished #2
• Djoker won AO
• Rafa won FO
• Djoker likely would have won WC
• Rafa didn't play USO and Djoker got DQ
• YEC ends with a new winner (happens a lot recently)

Sure, the young guys have closed the gap a bit, but the gap was so tremendous to begin with. So unless Thiem just takes over in a mass fury... nothing has changed.

Djoker/Rafa/Thiem wins USO21.

It’s nice to see both Med and Thiem recording new wins against the Big 3 (two each for this tournament, which is something), but we’ve had nextgen winners the last two Finals who have gone on to have terribly lackluster seasons the next year.

I also think that Rafa will retire relatively soon. One more FO? Possibly 2.

Normally, I understand Big 3 being jaded for YEC considering their age and priorities. But this year they came in fresh, well prepped and motivated to strike. And they still lost. Twice. It certainly feels different. All that is needed is just one more slam win from Thiem and co. beating the Big 3. That will open the floodgates. You cannot reverse time or stop change.

I don’t think the Big 3 will win every slam next year. The younger guys (i.e. anyone under 34 ) will nab at least one. But one of Nadal or Djokovic will probably end the year no. 1. Thiem’s the only guy who might wreck that party. If he can win the Australian Open, he could easily get to no. 1 at some point in the year, but that doesn’t mean he’ll finish no. 1, especially with the 2,000 points he’s defending from the US Open.

And Fed’s not even in the discussion for Wimbledon. He’ll be a month shy of 40. A quarterfinal would be a great accomplishment.

The question is how much do they still want it ?

Novak stated recently he was after all records, but then stank the joint big time in the first set vs Thiem and needed repeated chokes by him not to lose in straight.

He didn't sound too devastated in the presser either, as if he didn't really care.

Rafa is for his part in total denial about his repeated chokes in the important moments, and his strategical inadequacies when playing on hard ( net play brain farts, return from the stands, no drop shots, no good slice). Nothing indicates he's going to right the ship. He's just happy with winning the French until he's 40; the rest is just gravy: if it comes, it comes; if not, well that's too bad.
