Novak Djokovic and The USO - Can he end his career there as the USO Open Era's greatest champion?

A tennis player with a 5:5 balance has a success of 50 % in the finals.
A tennis player with a 5:2 balance has a success of 71,4 % in the finals.
yes it says fed better finalist, but djoko is better player overall at this tournament.. same thread has been about sampras vs fed in wimbledon finals.. sampras also has better balance (100%) there in finals while fed has 70%...sampras greater in finals, fed greater overall

Nole winning over Federer with MP's saved in those 2 SF's back in '10 & '11 color your view about Roger? That and the final in '15 should come into play I guess! :cautious:

Reading through some of the posts, I dont understand the logic for faulting someone for making more finals. I dont believe finals overcome less titles, but if people end up with the titles too, it makes your record that much better. By this logic Lendl is worse than Connors and McEnroe for reaching so many more slam finals, since he has a losing record in slam finals while Connors and McEnroe who reached many less slam finals do not.

Or Lendl's U.S Open record is worse than other 3 time winners (and Djokovic's too), people like Nadal, just because they got to and lost more finals. Or for a real laugh Federer's and Djokovic's French Open record is worse than all the other 1 time winners because they lost in so many RG finals.

The extra finals are all good and should be treated as "in addition" to the titles won . But something doesn't add up when we say the GOAT lost to Andy Murray and Wawrinka at the height of his powers.

I've addressed this many times; too much success breeds weariness physically and mentally! Nole works very hard out there and making all those finals made him vulnerable! Look at the end of the season; probably worn out after winning Wimbledon, Cincy, USO, & Shanghai, but dropped last 2 finals against Next-Gen's in Paris and London! It wasn't like any of these losses occurred because he was playing badly! They were sensational really! I give them more credit than trying to fault Nole for playing poorly!:cautious::rolleyes:;)

For me in a time, when both players had 6 titles, Djoker was a greater AO player thanks to a higher number of successful defenses of titles - 2012, 2013, 2016; while Fed 2007 and 2018.
What about all the times the player with 5-2 lost earlier than the 5-5 player?

According to some Djokovic fans he is the HC Goat right? So the supposed HC Goat have lost 5 Slam finals from 8 at US Open.I don't know for you but him losing 5 finals at HC Slam is not good outlook for a lot of people.HC is his best surface and he should have done better at US Open.He underachieved at this Slam. The fact that some people are trying to deny this is laughable.
He did underachieve, but if he did happen to win another 2 US Opens, Djokovic would have 17 HC Slam finals, and would have won 12. He would be 5-5 in US Opens and 7-0 in Australian Opens. Sure, he should have done better, but who would be better?

Clearly there's no one better at the AO. And if Djokovic reached 5 at the US Open, you'd have to look at their best results. Federer has 5 wins, 2 finals, 3 semifinals, and 2 quarters. Djokovic would hypothetically have 5 wins, 5 finals, 3 semis. Clearly the records here are in favor of Djokovic, purely going by wins.

Sure, you can try to make a case for the intangibles of winning 5 in a row, and the dominance that shows - but then you have to ask why given all that dominance and longevity that Federer never eked out another win.

Of course, this is all hypothetical unless Djokovic wins another 2. But as is, Federer is the best HC champion and US Open GOAT.

Wrong. He just think he will come the HC GOAT. ******* right now is still the HC GOAT.

One of No1e's problems at USO is that he has never defending his title. Defending titles is a very important factor for me. To make Ultron the GOAT of USO, he has to get 6 titles. 5 titles for GOAT USO can not be enough, due to Federer's series of 5 titles in row in a years 2004-08, which are four successful defences. To overcome Federer on USO, Djoker needs 3 titles.

At the moment, Djoker is not in the group 5 greaterst players at USO history. More titles than Ultron have Federer, Connors, Sampras, McEnroe. The last place in the Top 5 belongs to Lendl, who has three USO titles, as Djoker, but also two successful defences, even managed to complete the hat-trick, this record has already reached only Big Mac and Fed at USO. If Djoker gains the 4th USO title, will overcomes Lendl, but he will be behind Big Mac (because Big Mac also owns the hat-trick). If Ultron gains the 5th USO title, will overcomes Big Mac.

If Djoker had 5 USO titles and had two successful defenses on his account, he would have exceeded Connors and Sampras, who managed only once to defend the title.

In this thread, they are opinions, that Djoker's advantage is 8 participations in the finals, but 5 of them Djoker lost and the lost finals are double-sided weapon. They show the very good consistency of the tennis player, but also his weaker success in the finals.
So in other words, you look for dominance instead of consistency, is that right?

A player that wins 3 US Opens in a row, goes 3-0 in finals, and never makes another semi is better than Novak, then?

Losing in finals tends to be harder to take as you have come close, but in terms of achievements it's undoubtedly better than losing earlier. I definitely prefer what Djokovic has now over him hypothetically getting bounced early several times, like it was the case with Nadal at Wimbledon against journeymen for several years in succession. That's a worse look for such a great than being denied by another contender.

It was Red Star before they got eliminated. Now I think there isn't a favourite but I am rooting for Barcelona. If Ronaldo wins the UCL again with Juventus I will stop watching football and possibly jump off a cliff.

this year it will be 20 years it came from that dramatically ended up immense match vs bayern, i still can't believe how it happened when remembering )
My favorite goal ever and one of favorite memories from those times.

If my memory is good, @Tiki-Taka was actually at that game. Lucky *beep*. :-D

You should just sit back and enjoy the CL GOAT instead. :p

Solksjaer has produced a miracle before - maybe he can do it one more time? :)
Would be the most stunning thing. :) He is not the guy behind my username for no reason. :D

also rooting for barca many years) ..wait, tennis and djoko still here so you will always have a time to climb up a cliff;)

When I look at Djokovic, I see a failure as far as the UO goes. He needs the record to change my mind because right now I mostly remember a bunch of losses and lucky wins over Federer. That's his legacy there for me until he changes it.
Lucky wins ? How so ? In 2010, he just played brilliantly to save those 2 match points, that was anything but luck. In 2011, he got a bit lucky when he saved the first match point with this insane winner and Federer choked on the second one. But he still had to win 3 games in a row to win the match.

In 2015, he was just the superior player. Federer couldn't have won.

When Pete and Roger tied at 7 Wimby, Fed fans claimed he's superior due to the extra finals.

When Roger and Novak ties at 5 USO (suppose it happens), Fed fans claim Novak is inferior due to the extra finals.

Can you list the posters in this thread that apparently claim what you say they claim?

Hopefully you will not give me some BS response.

What; USO's? I know it can't be holding of the #1 ranking since Nole needs 30 more weeks to tie Connors!:cautious::rolleyes:;)
Just like even with 6-6 I always felt Nole was the greater champ at AO because he dominated more during his peak.

So if Nole were to win his 5th USO by beating the likes of Zverev and Thiem aged 33-34 it wouldn’t suddenly elevate him above Federer, Connors or Sampras there imo. With 6 it would be hard to argue, but with the above caveat.

No one ever said he was inferior due to extra finals. He's inferior because he's horrible in finals.
