Novak Djokovic calls hunt for Grand Slam record and weeks at #1 the biggest reason that he's still playing

How much does the Sunday final affect who's going to end up with the most GS titles?

Of course and it’s the reason they all still playing. As well as they love the game too! They know they are still the best 3 in the world, even after all these years. Fed wants to protect his legacy and Rafa and Djoko want to pass it. Another huge match in the GOAT race tomorrow!

The whole "love of the game" line is getting ridiculous. Only started hearing this in the past couple years. Not sure why. Seems to imply that players like Federer don't care about results, and since they have nothing more to prove, and plenty of wealth, they just play for the love of the game? .Look, these guys are still winning a high percentage of matches and titles. Once the losses start to mount we'll see how long "love of the game" lasts.

How on earth do you know that?

Federer clearly loves the sport, always has, since his days as a ponytailed teenager defeating his idol, Sampras.

Novak Djokovic OTOH is a machine like entity who only cares about getting his name in the record books.

Aye.
Huh? The Joker often refers to his childhood dreams of winning major titles. I've seen a YouTube of his where he returns to an overgrown decrepit wall in the woods that he used to hit against as a child, waxing nostalgic. Does this prove he loves the game?

Did you even listen to the interview or are you purposely mischaracterizing Novak's answer? He very clearly said that the main reason he's still playing and having success is because he's enjoying the sport as much as ever, not chasing records. And lmao at the clowns writing fanfiction about their commercially-driven idol's love for the game. Make sure you're wearing that artificially scarce $25k Rolex Daytona that's worth $300 in parts to commemorate another Wimbledon final beatdown.

That’s not the first time he says it.

At least he’s more honest than Nadal (who doesn’t openly admit it’s his main objective) about it and that’s a good thing. There’s no shame in gunning for the GS record when you’re an ATG. Who would be content about being second or third when you have a shot at becoming the best ?

It's very insecure to seek love from generic people.

I want love only from a few close people.
I think it's a non-issue for him to want/desire as much support that Federer and Nadal gets. It'll make you insecure if you make it into a "need" though but that's not the case for Djokovic because he seems to be doing just fine despite the supposed lesser support.

Fred has a chance to temporarily halt Novak's Weeks #1 assault by the USO.

This of course assumes Fred beats Nolan at Wimby, has a decent showing in either Montreal or Cincy, then gets to semis/final at USO minimum and Nolan doesn't defend his 1000 pts in Cincy or 2000 pts in USO.

It will be interesting to see how Ralph and Nolan handle the summer hardcourt season. As Fred got older his play started declining during the summer hardcourt season and that was with winning Cincy a few times.

2014 he was gassed from a full summer schedule.
2015 he made final but still wasnt as sharp against Novak.
2017 he started well in Montreal got injured then almost got upset against Tiafoe and Youzhny in USO.
2018 injury from Wimby carried over to Cincy and then another R16 exit for him.

We'll see how Djokodal manage their summer schedule and if next-gen actually steps up this time of year. Shapo did in Montreal a few years ago (as well as Zverev), Títs did it last year. We'll see. Next Gen should be fully rested for summer hardcourt after earlt exits in Wimby.
You broke character in your oh-so-hilarious “Ralph-Nolan” blah blah shtick in the 2015 line there in your comment. Sorry to tell you that mate.

I believe this is the first time a Big 3 player has said out loud in an interview that he's gunning for the grand slam records. He even says the weeks at #1 record is already "not so far away".

Starts talking about it around 2:30

Do you think he will overtake Fedr? How much does the upcoming final play a role in this?
Djokovic winding Federer up....tomorrow is epic as there is bad blood as well.

Stop being naive for heaven's sakes. Do you know how much it takes to be a professional tennis player especially for a 37 years old with a family?

Ideally most people in Federer shoes with his wealth would prefer to spend time together with his family raising his 4 children. Tennis takes a bit of that away given the constant travellings and whatsnot.

To be willing to sacrifice some of that time with family means there is something meaningful and valuable on the line which is Federer case is preserving that record. Naive explanation such as him still playing on the professional tour at his advanced age being the love of the game is absurd and should be ridiculed if I'm being honest.

You'd see even coaches like Lendl not always travelling with their players to tournaments because he'd like to spend time with his family. People don't choose to travel around all year long constantly away from their families just because they want to have fun, there has to be something bigger at stake.

Actually Nadal has admitted that he's chasing that record as well.

This is getting awfully pathetic. Federer, nadal, and djokovic play for the love of the game but they are acutely aware of the records in front of them or the ones they need to maintain. Don’t be naive. Mentally wise they have the same goals but all have that love for the game as well. Djoko was directly asked a question about records and he prefaced his answer by saying he really just plays for the love of the game and that he’s won every major tournament. I dont know whats up with neurotic ,out of tune , djokovic haters manipulating what he says and what he thinks but its gotten next level. If you dont love greatness shut up and stop watching federer, nadal, and djokovic play then.

I know. But he pretends it’s just secondary, which I don’t buy.
Of course he'd pretend it's secondary to keep a restrained image in the media, just like Federer has somehow convinced most of his delusional fanatics that's he's still on the tour because of his love for the game or also how Nole at time would try to emphasise that first and for most he plays because he loves the sport etc.

They all have to say a bunch of PR stuff to keep a certain profile but any normal thinking person would know they thrive on success and potential glory success.

They're all in it for records now.

Around next Wimbledon 2020, Novak could have 18 GSs (WB 19, USO 19 and AO 20), the most weeks at No.1, all masters, 4 GS in a row... crazy stuff. And that is all by 33 years of age. Nadal would be having the same 19 GS and Fed 20. I expect these three to continue fighting in their wheel chairs and hit with crutches for some time. It's really been a long time since all this started and soon will have finale. Completely ridiculous. I was still going to school in 1999 and remember listening on radio (since we didn't have Internet then) some new name Federer, a guy won some tournament. I was like, this guy has some French name. I thought, now way someone beats Sampras. And in that happened in 2001. And than 2005 at RG Nadal won his first GS title. Oh boy, it's been 20 years already with these players around. Almost dead tired myself from life and they still play. WTH?!

Do you love to lose? Man, the condescension is strong in this thread. That's why athletes cry at their retirement press conferences—because they *still* love the game but can't play at a competitive level anymore.
