Novak Djokovic: ''I want to stretch my prime over a few years''

Yep I've been fiddling around with it and comparing different sets of players - really good. I'll make a thread on this later (probably tomorrow) using and obviously crediting your work.

The decline is not in sight. He seems confident in himself. Nobody beats time, but Djokovic is not going away soon.
Btw, that same and full article was posted in thread Djokovic news a week ago.
The decline is never in sight before it starts to happen. It's always rather sudden and unexpected, even when it is gradual.

Actually I didn't realise Nadal's overall points total for his "second peak" in 2010 would be so much below his 2008 and 2013 peaks. @SpicyCurry1990 suggested that Nadal accumulated more points during 2010 but I guess we were going by calendar years rather than accounting for the lag effect for the form to truly show its full worth in the ranking points totals.

Yeah, that doesn't work very well with the thing I'm using. However I changed the interactive version a little bit. Maybe this will help?

I see what you've done and it makes the cross referencing way easier. Fair enough on the lines/grid not really being possible. This is more than enough and thanks again.

Put it on JSBin instead, so now it uses more screen space. Incidentally:

Minimum difference between #1 and #2:
2013-10-07 - 40 points (Nadal: 11160, Djokovic: 11120)

Maximum difference between #1 and #2:
2015-09-14 - 6740 points (Djokovic: 16145, Federer: 9405)

Minimum total #1 + #2:
2010-05-17 to 2010-05-31: 16910 points (Federer: 10030, Nadal: 6880)

Maximum total #1 + #2:
2009-04-20: 26150 points (Nadal: 15390, Federer: 10760)

So I am seeing some very weird numbers in early 2009; they seem to be too high. What gives?

Not sure.. I think it's right.

Djokovic's ranking points total hasn't dropped below 10000 since May 9, 2011. That's ridiculous. He's maintained a minimum total seemingly higher than Murray's career peak points total, for the last 4 years.

Also interesting to observe is the clash of peaks between Djokovic-Nadal in 2011 — where it seems clear that Djokovic ascended beyond Nadal — and in 2013, where Nadal proved to be the only player capable of producing a stint of form that was able to crash through Mr.Minimumof10000points for the #1 spot.

It seems to reinforce the idea that Murray can't realistically take #1 from Djokovic unless Djo has a significant decline or (or rather and) Murray goes beyond where he's ever gone before.

Djokovic's rivals accrued points totals that would have sufficed for #1 in some other years, but Djokovic's time at #1 is well and truly earned and of extremely high quality.

Murray went and got some points on clay this year, so perhaps he can break 10k soon.

Wow!!! Nadal played out of his skin in 2013 yet he was only 40 points ahead of Djokovic. That's scary.

In Serbia to promote his foundation, he spoke to local press in Belgrade.

"In tennis, I have achieved everything that I had dreamed of. I have become the world No. 1 and won the Wimbledon, but now I want to stretch my prime over a few more years. If I maintain the same approach, I think that I can play on this level for a few more years."

You see that ''but now''?

He is far from satisfied.

You guys think he means business?

What a dumb comment from Djokovic and a dumb thread. What Djokovic "wants" and what will happen in reality are quite possibly two different things. Some people say they want to live forever too.

Great stuff!

Wait what, Im confused. Nadal's point totals are 13>10>08. What do you mean his peak total was so much lower in 2010?

This is why it will be so difficult to overtake Novak as No.1, Murray has to do something his never done before, Nadal has to play out of his skin just to be level with Novak.

Nice, I thought that maybe I can do something like that, but no chance :(
It would be nice to update chart when big 4 finish their carriers.

This is just GREAT.

Can i ask what software have you used?
And from where you got data?

Keep the good work up:), i keep track of other numbers by writing formulas in excel :p

You can see more discussion on jm1980's work over here--> http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/atp-ranking-points-totals-chart-2009–present.545508/

Do take note that numbers for the first year are inflated due to the crossover of ranking systems from 2008-2009, where apparently the points were just simply doubled in accordance with the old 2000-2008 ratios rather than taking into account the new ranking point ratios from 2009-present. @jm1980 talks about this at some point in the thread.

It would be nice if he can "keep up the good work" and perhaps there are other projects he could cook up. He only needed an hour or two to put all of this together.

Excellent work, i have maintained and still maintaining other statistics. If he has time i could apprise him about them and he could work on them on a similar way, of course if those will interest him :)

He may well be open to your ideas. It would be worth sending him a private message with your suggestions. Yeah, I think it would be worth your time to engage with him.

Why only 4? Who else is there to stop him? Semi retired Fed, Nadal or Wawrinka? Murray?

He should be able to cruise through between 2-4 slams/year for the next 3-4 years. I reckon another 9 slams is realistic. Remember that a lot of people are calling this a weak era.

I think Olympics win may drive Nole to play a few more years, whereas Wimbledon loss made him seriously consider retirement at the end of 2024. I think he needs to be realistic and as long as he is happy to stay on tour even if he wins no more slams, he should play on because I on't see anyone beating him anywhere other than Sinner and Alcaraz yet. Of course, he's lost to low ranked players this year but that's what happens when players get older. Nole may even steal another slam if Sinner and Alcaraz get knocked out early as well, so I think he should keep playing as long as he is healthy and fit enough.
