Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year - 2011.

Congratulations to Novak, well deserved.

"Novak Djokovic named 2012 Laureus Sportsman of Year."

I thought so, why don't they just call it "2011 Laureus ... Year" since it's for achievements in 2011.

It seems atleast one tennis player, often two, winning the award has become an annual thing in the last decade.

Winning three slams in a year seems to be a lock on the Laureus, but tennis players must be the most hardworking sportsmen and women in non-team sports.

Serena won it a couple years ago when she won only 3 tournaments all year. Capriati won it in 2001 winning only 3 tournaments all year as well. I think they also just like giving it to a tennis player.

What;s all this obsession with soccer, and soccer teams. What about other sports like cricket ?

edit: Vivian running 14:20 for the 5,000m. Woooow !

Did Rafa win Laures. I thought he lost to Usain Bolt.

What's this fascination with Usain Bolt? He's done nothing lately other than get himself DQ'd at the world championships.

It's football. Football is by far the biggest sport in the world.

The main reason though that FC Barcelona have won the trophy is that they have won almost every competition they competed in the last 3 years.

In an almost "Federer" like manner. With many technical small players playing some of the best football ever. According to people who can know like Sacchi and Cruijff.

Is a bitter man who can't accept his time has past and there are coaches, teams and whole federations who are just as qualified as him to comment on football. Just look at the way he has spurned Ajax at every turn. Typical of most ultra-ambitious and mercurial football stars. Still unsavoury however.

You forgot to mention the unfair financial advantage Barcelona have over 99.9 of the teams they compete against at home and in Europe.

3 slams is tough to beat. All 3 slam winners have gone to win Laures.

Fed won in 2005 though he won 2 slams but had a wonderful year 81-4 and no great competition.

Nadal in 2008 was also superb but Usain Bolt broke world records in Olympics :)

In the U.S. Sports Illuatrated magazine has its annual Athlete of the Year, but despite Federer's multi-year dominance he never won it. So as an American who loves tennis in a non-tennis loving country it's nice to see great tennis athletes rewarded for all the hard work and great accomplishments they achieve. Congratulations to Novak. He deserved it.
