Novak Djokovic has officially withdrawn from the ATP player council elections after it was deemed his role in the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) was a ‘conflict of interest’. Djokovic, the world No. 1 from Serbia, stepped down from his role as president of the council in August after he co-founded a new organisation that is designed to represent players’ interests. It came as a surprise, then, when Djokovic was included among the list of candidates to form the newly elected council for the start of 2021. However, ATP officials decided to block the move – for the same reason they asked Djokovic and those involved in the PTPA to step away from the council in the first place – and passed legislation that would stop council members being involved with organisations deemed to have a ‘conflict of interest’.
Djokovic suggested at the ATP Finals he would not be able to stand in the elections for that reason and has now officially stepped back. ‘I would like to first say, as always, I am honoured by the continued support and confidence shown by those who nominated me to once again serve our collective player interests on the council,’ wrote Djokovic in a lengthy statement on social media.
