Novak Djokovic : Roger Federer should have played a match on No. 1 court

The world No. 1 thinks the decision may have been taken due to the uncertainty over whether Federer will return to play at Wimbledon next year.
Eight-time champion Federer played all five of his matches at this year’s Championships on Centre Court – and was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz in the last eight on Wednesday.

Five-time winner and two-time defending champion Djokovic played his third round match against Denis Kudla on No. 1 Court.

“Everything is going well for me in terms of programming. I am used to playing at least one match on Court No. 1,” the Serbian said in a press conference after his quarter-final win over Marton Fucsovics.
“Usually when Federer and [Rafael] Nadal are in the draw, that is [also the case for them]. For my quarter-final, I asked to play the first game on Centre Court. Roger Federer has played all his matches at Centre Court so far, that’s okay. It is the decision of the organisation.
“Should he have played on Court No. 1 for some youngsters, like [Matteo] Berrettini, to have the chance to play on Centre? Yeah, probably. But that’s their decision, as it’s unclear if Roger will return [to Wimbledon] next year.”

Stick to playing! Organisers can do their jobs without the players chiming in lol

Obviously someone asked him the question. Was he supposed to lie, just to be polite?

Everyone was supposed to play C1, why not Federer?
He could just say hey I’m a player. Ask me questions about tennis playing.
Btw I agree with him.

Well, he did say "It is the decision of the organisation" :-) this is just a clickbait headline designed to provoke a controversy where none exists.

Don't get it.

What the hell is the problem with playing on Court #1. Is it some rickety rackety dump?

Looks to be an ego thing.

If you ask Djokovic, expect an honest answer. Federer could get as many CC assignments as he wants, but in this case, in retrospect, the #2 seed was short changed.

If he decides to play Wimbledon again, the scheduling committee should feel free to put the losing quarterfinalist anywhere, so as not to mess up the top seeds.

Roland Garros makes even Nadal, who has a literal statue on their grounds, play on Suzanne Lenglen once a tournament. I think this is a reasonable answer.

For obvious reasons ($$$$$$$$) they were always going to put Roger on CC though. And why not? If he’s going to bring the most eyes and ticket sales, that’s the smart thing to do.

Djokovic is 100% right. I love it. He’s just calling out what lots of the other players don’t have the balls to say. Fed gets way too much preferential treatment and it backfired big time on the organisers when he got thrashed in the quarters.
Hurkacz even said finishing on CC made him used to it (not that it helped him with Berrettini yikes).

The quality of the matches have gone downhill though. I'll never forget going to an IW match between Fed/Wawrinka I think in 2019 that ended in like 40 min. So many posh cars reeling up and then like 70% of the stadium left despite a woman's match right after I think Kerber/Sabalenka. I mean, me and my friend stayed because we paid a whole $35 for the session (I know, is joke but last min deal before it was officially announced that it was Fed match).

Like I get the name recognition but especially for a Slam I think you want long enough matches with some drama. The Semifinals today fit the bill as even the straight set affair for Novak took near 3 hours. That's what you should want from a late round Slam match, 2-3 hours of SOME drama. Fed match was garbage including the 2nd set tiebreak.

Novak's opinion on anything is worth zero. Stick to playing tennis. Nobody cares about the opinions of some anti-vax, anti-gmo, new-age nutbag.

Eh I mean the idea is you might see the last match that the great Roger Federer ever plays at Wimbledon. I get why they charge such a premium. In fact I think Roger being on CC is the least controversial part about the whole tournament. Federer is such a huge draw, I can’t deny the guy has unique mass appeal unlike any other player.

Plus when this is your clientele, something tells me the tennis quality is not of the utmost importance…

Truthfully I sort of agree with him. The possibility it might be Roger’s last Wimbledon coloured those court assignment decisions.

I mean they SCREWED over Medvedev BIG TIME. They made sure the #2 seed does NOT get to the QF. But Roger lost anyway in straight sets. Karma is a b*** came to bite them.

I mean he’s not wrong from a player perspective. From a $$$$ perspective there’s a reason Fed is on CC and Fed has earned that. Anyone who WANTS that treatment, go earn it!
