Novak Djokovic to open new restaurant for 'those in need'

Great gesture by Novak Djokovic. The 12-time Grand Slam champion is planning to open a new restaurant in Serbia to help 'those in need', according to The Mirror.

The former world no. 1 has owned a restaurant called 'Novak' in Belgrade since 2009, and in 2016 opened his second restaurant 'Eqvita' in Monte Carlo. Food is a passion and tradition in Djokovic's family, as when Novak was growing up, his parents had a restaurant in Serbia.

Announcing the news about the new restaurant that will give away food for free, Djokovic said: 'Money is not a problem for me. I have earned enough to feed all Serbia, I think that they deserve this after all the support they are giving to me.' Speaking about how for him food is important, last year Djokovic said: 'Because of my family, I’ve always had a love for food.

But as an athlete, it became something more — the fuel that determines how I play, how I recover and how alert I am on the court. I attribute a great deal of my professional success to my diet. Food is my passion. Of all the things I’ve experienced in life, food has changed me the most.

That is the most awesome thing I've heard in a long time! Vamos NOLE Giving back to the world and making it a better place! Good on ya mate!! Pure Class, and hopefully this will inspire others to start giving more and more to the hungry, poor, and less fortunate in the world!
Let's not make this thread into a oneupmanship tug of war among fans. The other top players have always done their bit for the under-privileged at home and abroad.

Since 2010, Rafa has been helping one of the poorest and most needy areas of India, Anantapur, and some of the poorest and most excluded communities in the world, the 'dalits' or untouchables, tribal groups, as well as the so-called disadvantaged castes.

Surprising you only mention Rafa and neglect Fed who has done SO MUCH more. Or Andy.

Nice gesture from Novak!

Just 2 questions:

1. How will he determine who is genuinely in need from who is just after a free handout?

2. Why is he wearing a paper bag on his head?

I did say "The other top players have always done their bit for the under-privileged at home and abroad". If you want to list the projects of Federer and Murray, feel free to do so. I think it's unfortunate that TahoeTennis's comments imply that the other top players do nothing for anyone.

C'mon guys don't argue it out when things are on good terms. We all know that the players have given back, and continue to give back, to different areas around the world. Novak, Rafa, Roger, Andy, etc. Foundations, restaurants, donations, and so on. Can't we keep things positive with such great news?

That's what I was hoping for.

Geez, Don't presume my intentions. My comment implied nothing and i never mentioned any other player because this thread is about only nole and his restaurant.

Guys like Safin, Philipoussis and Borg, Nastase, Vilas, Panatta before them used to give to the "needy" as well. Is that still considered an act of charity ??

I wonder if the restaurant is only in Belgrade and whether it's à la carte or a set menu. I hope they have checks and balances to make sure only the needy go there, otherwise it will become a bottomless pit and many will be creaming off the edges.

It is a great gesture done with the best intentions I am sure.

I hope that he will find a time to personally be part of this charity after his career as tennis player is over as it is much more fulfilling and sincere endeavour, when he gets to participate directly.

Yeah but 'X' is a mil/billionaire so that's peanuts
'Y' has done so much more
Why is he doing it over there?
How come he isn't doing it over here?
Yeah, but let's examine the timing
Doesn't he have like several homes and stuff
He's a cleverer businessman than you think
How do we know if the needy are needy o_O
It's just self-promotion
Ah, another tax-avoidance loophole
Really nice gesture, BUT.......................................

Is it just 'healthy cynicism' when people immediately question anything that seems a genuinely humane gesture?

Or does it trigger some sort of self-esteem defense-mechanism reflex in people when we are made to reflect on our own shortcomings as human beings?

I have no idea how they will make that work, but it's a truly amazing gesture.

(And I want to say I can't believe the clowns have even managed to turn this thread into a battleground, but that would be a lie)
It will work if it's just subsistence food anything else, it will be abused.

The population of Serbia is 7m; Novak's career prize money is 110m. How long will he be able to feed the whole of Serbia for on just his prize money?

I hope this quote will put an end to all the complaints and even mocking about his "vegan" diet. It's not vegan. And it's great for him.

Great gesture. Wish him a great recovery and strong comeback.

Are you for real? The entire population of Serbia is not indigent, so they won't be feeding 7 million. Nor would I expect that the money he's earned has juest been sitting inertly by - ever heard of investments, interest etc. And anyway, if everyone sat on their hands and moaned that this or that wouldn't work, nothing would get done.

Is this guy done with tennis? While I applaud his initiative, I'd rather he work on his game. He might play for another 5 or 6 year at the most. Can't this wait until then? The more he immerses himself into non-tennis related work, the more he's going to drift away from being a top competitor.

I applaud Djokovic for this, personally. He's got a lot of money and so can choose do some good with it. He's giving something back. He's won a lot in tennis and he'll be 31 next year so there's no guarantees he'll ever win again like he did at his peak anyway. No one has a divine right to win.

Agreed

1. He might just give food to those in need, probably directly to a homeless shelter or something.

2. It was raining that day, no? Or maybe Murray simply isn't good enough to wear one.

Why not stay in Serbia instead of Monte Carlo and pay full taxes?

2015 article:

Nowadays, Monaco offers primary residence to many of the world’s top-ranked male and female players. This includes Serbia’s Novak Djokovic (1), the Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova (4), Tomas Berdych (4) and Lucie Safarova (13), Canada’s Milos Raonic (6), Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki (5), Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov (11) and the Croatian Marin Cilic (10).

But why would he need to open a restaurant just to do that?

I don't think Andy wears paper hats. Think he prefers to use an umbrella when it's raining (like most of us).

Why not? How else is he going to make the food solely for the homeless. Both restaurants are small (Novak's and Eqvita), so having a 3rd restaurant for the homeless makes perfect sense.

Andy is not worthy of paper hats, let alone a grand slam. But seriously though: isn't that a rubber bucket hat?

Thought he might make it all in one of his kitchens. He could get Marko and Djordje to help him (they don't seem to be doing much at the moment). Srdjan and Dijana might muck in as well and Pepe could supervise the whole operation by intoning amor-y-paz mantras to woo the hearts of the great Serbian unfed. ;)

Why are you having a go at Andy? He's not the one proposing to open an 'eat-as-much-as-you-want-for-free restaurant'. He's too busy organising £50,000 a head charity dinners with his best bud, Rogi:cool:

As someone who has taken APES and is taking AP Econ this year, I've heard of something called the "Tragedy of the Commons". If Novak knows and has regulations and such, no problem, but...

The prevailing policy is, in any case, to cut tax for the upper wealth and income levels and to legitimise that by providing incentives for philanthropy.

Because corrupt Serbian government doesn't deserve multi million taxes. I'd rather have him save the taxes and do the things for the country the way he sees fit.

And why would we trust Nole?
Because his actions show so.
He had his fundation going for many years, financed pre school educational institutions, reconstruction of the zoo, donated his entire Rome prize money to the victims of the floods, just of top of my head... And now this restaurant for underprivileged...
