Novak Djokovic told he ‘already seems outdated’ as Jannik Sinner ‘invented a new game’

Italian tennis great Adriano Panatta believes Jannik Sinner has “invented a new game” and asserted Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal — and even Novak Djokovic — seem “outdated” in comparison.

The 1976 French Open champion also assessed that Federer “would have had a lot of trouble with Sinner” even when at his peak because the Italian “hits too hard.”

Sinner crushed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the 2024 Miami Open on Sunday to win his third title of 2024 and continue his remarkable surge.

The 22-year-old, who now holds a 22-1 record this season, has climbed to a career-high ranking of world No 2, having also triumphed at the Australian Open and in Rotterdam this year.

The Italian has lost only three matches since his defeat to Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of the 2023 US Open in September. Following that, Sinner has won five titles, led Italy to Davis Cup glory and also finished as a runner-up at the ATP Finals.

Panatta, a former world No 4 who played professionally from 1969 and 1983, lauded Sinner after his compatriot’s latest triumph and made some big statements involving the Big Three.

“Have you ever trained with a ball throwing machine? The ball throwing machine, as you know, never makes mistakes,” the 73-year-old Italian told RAI.

“Jannik invented a new game. Even Djokovic already seems outdated today, not to mention Federer or Nadal. These players are already part of the past. But not because they resigned, but because their game no longer corresponds to what is needed today.

“I’ll even say a word to you. Even Federer at his best would have had a lot of trouble with Sinner because Jannik hits too hard, I’ve never seen him hit that hard, come on.”

Following Djokovic’s record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam triumph at the 2023 French Open, Panatta argued Federer remained the GOAT despite the legendary Serbian’s achievement.

“For me, nothing changes – Roger Federer is the greatest. It’s not just a matter of aesthetics. And not even of statistics, which they like so much but leave the time they find,” he said in an interview with Corriere della Serra.

“Let me explain better – in the few years that he has played, [Bjorn] Borg has concentrated more Grand Slam victories than Djokovic, Nadal and Federer combined.”
Not as stupid as it seems prima facie. Sinner and Alcaraz have moved the game on movement wise and ball striking wise. However the reason the Big 3 lasted 20 plus years was because they could adapt their games as it evolved so if they were younger no question they would find a way of adapting and beating them

Have you seen Sinner and Alcaraz live? I have and up close and their movement is the best i have seen it really is. Sinner only recently has evolved to that level but it is spell binding to see.

You shouldn't be allowed to own a computer making statements like this.

At this point all the Sinner hype makes me want to support Djokovic to win Wimbledon.

If his progress continues like this, the good sinner could reach that figure in two years at the latest.
I want to see him in action on clay to see his improvement on the surface less suited to his style of play.
Roland Garros will be the most difficult Major tournament to win for the Italian player.
:)

I think he’ll be the most successful Australian Open player between 2020-2030. I predict he wins at least 5 titles in Down Under.

Tell me your prediction for Sinner in the 4 Majors tournaments for the rest of his career.
:D

What bs. Jannik has invented nothing new, sorry. I cringed hard reading that due to second hand embarrassment.
hey, fellow italian, the guy's excited...it's ok. imo roger's best lines up better against sinner than novak...prime roger loved pace and i think he's got more tools to throw sinner off-balance...of course, novak might just out-sinner him as well, but i could see federer exposing/creating more holes in his game.

It was expected as history teaches us that sooner or later a new ace will emerge and conquer it all - Sinner the Conquerer. He will tore apart the competition as he will do everything better and with more zest and strength. After he beheaded the beast (Djokovic) at AO only the sky is the limit and Sword of Sinner will rip through the flash of measly contenders to the throne that belongs to one and only new king Sinner.

Sinners game has just evolved to a whole other level.
Out strategizing medvedev just shows how dangerous he is right now. Can play tactical tennis and flat out crush the ball with ease.

He steam rolled his way through Miami.
He steam rolled Novak.

Yeah he’s due to have an off day here and there. It’s tennis so it will happen. But overall he’s got to be the favorite going into each 1000 and slam right now.

This is madness what hype goes around after a good run in form. Yes Sinner is class and he certainly has gone to elite level he finally beat Djokovic in a slam who is nearly 37 and all of a sudden he invented a new game.

Nadal and Djokovic in their peak now would leave Sinner and Alcaraz with nothing this season

Adriano Panatta has a strange and well-documented hate b0ner for Djokovic, and I genuinely don't know what's in it for a seventy-something Hall of Famer to be talking sh1t this publicly.

Jannik Sinner was granted Papal powers. Holy water flows in his veins.

To me it's so funny how we needed to wait for 3 consecutive generation and Djokodal being 36.5+ for someone to finally take over and still in 2023, when Sinner and Alcaraz should have been the prime contenders for Slams, Djokovic won 3 Slams and the YEC.
And lost a close 5 setter in the other one.

No one will ever convince me the Sinner/Alcaraz/Rune had such a bump in their play quality no matter how much they win in the future. The precendent set it's just too much.

For starters they should start dispaching good versions of Medvedev and Zverev easily in HC Slams, this will at least convince me they can take on pre-pandemic versions of Big 3 (2017-2019).

Sinner is his own man but he is also following Djokovic’s footsteps in an almost perplexing manner. Ironically he is most like the older Novak.
Hope he stays within himself and does not fall for "Hochmut". If somebody can do this, its him.

First off. Rune doesn’t belong in the same conversation with sinner and alcaraz.

Same with zverev and medvedev. The H2H speaks for itself with a grand slam title over a GOAT.

What you all are not seeing is that it has already begun

The systematic destruction and the re-writing of history, with the big 3 being pushed into oblivion....this is what the new generations will see, and then the questions will be?

Federer who?

Nadal who?

Djokovic who?

Oh those dinosaurs? Yeah, they wouldn't last a season with these new guys.
True. But they already 'dinosaured' previous greats when the Big Three were coming up.

Fed was being called GOAT already in 2005 long before he broke the slam mark, then Fed got dinosaured when Nadal started winning off clay and Nadal dinosaured once Djokovic gained the upper hand.

In sports media, the hype machine must always march on. Latest is greatest, lest we sound too much like the cantankerous geezer reminiscing "back in my day, they really knew how to play". To be young, one must think and act young, and that means latching on to the latest fad, whether for real or not. If not, no one will remember anyway as you and everyone else will have moved on to the next fad.

Alcaraz to win the Golden Calendar Slam in 2028 at 25 years of age and go down as undisputed GOAT. It is his destiny.

He hasn't invented much but it's in line with what we have seen being developed for quite a few years. Big, tall players with big serves, groundies while moving close to Djokovic and Nadal from the baseline. They can run. What many doesn't have is the ROS, and Sinner has been gifted with a world class one. He has also what seems sorted out his serve and hardly gets broken nowdays. He is becoming unstoppable.

Djokovic is 37 soon and the fact that he been able to dominate still is nothing short of remarkable. We have too see if he can still keep up this year but to expect that would be ridiculous.
