And Novak offers us another absolute classic. The quality of the tennis was top notch throughout. The post match hug and interview was pure class. Wawa threw everything he had. No matter what happens next round, this was a superb moment of tennis. Pure emotion and that's why I watch this sport. I had taped the match and spent the whole afternoon watching it. A thrilling experience. Thank you guys.

I went to bed after that utter choke in the second by Wawrinka. That was truly pathetic how he fell apart from 6-1 5-2 up. I am shocked he managed to regroup and make it so close in the end.

Good on him for playing a great match. And good for Djokovic to eke out another close one.

However, the cowardice of the underdogs against the big 4 is unbelievable! Makes Rosol's performance against Nadal even more impressive. He was actually tough as nails, whereas most of these other guys don't have the belief. Wishing for some more surprises in tennis, because its getting too predictable.

i did the exact, same thing. i thought djokovic had in in the bag after the second. i woke up to check the scores to find they were still playing in the fifth.

i'm hoping to see more guys on tour step up as well.

The thing which strikes me as counter-productive with Wawrinka - and it showed in this match - is he often shifts to hit backhands off balls which are coming straight at him. I know he is more comfortable hitting them but he should be hitting forehands. I don't think I've ever seen someone move around their forehand to hit a backhand before.

No matter how comfortable he is hitting backhands you simply can't get the mixture of power and torque, or disguise that you can when hitting a forehand - plus, because most of his shots went back towards his opponent's backhand side he was 2m further to the right of the court and further out of position for the most likely return shot from his opponent - the crosscourt. He bungled a number of rallys yesterday doing this - a couple on very key points too. It seems more habit than deliberate and doesn't usually serve him well.

The women do this all the time.

As a big Novak fan, I am thrilled that he won that match. He is truly building a great legacy, with monumental matches. Having said that, it takes two players to put on an epic.

Stan was just majestic throughout that encounter. His sublime play at times made him look like a multi slam winner and world number one. A sensational performance that reminded me of one of my fav matches of all time, Nadal V Verdasco 09.

Stan stayed with Novak throughout, and pushed the defending champion to the brink, just as Murray and Nadal did last year. Novak, a true champion managed to fight his way to a win. A great display of heart and passion, from both players. And as Novak said, they both deserved to win that match, but there can only be one.

I am glad that Novak is alive, and I hope he gets enough rest and is ready for the upcoming challenges. :)

What a beautiful post!

No lines can be called out wrong because simply by human error these mistakes happen. And the solution to this problem at challenges. And you can blame no one but Stan himself for not challenging. Are you new to tennis or something? I mean shall we go back in history and cry about every bad call ever made which favoured a particular player to the point that they won the match?

The reason why Wawa didn't challenge is because he had squandered challenges unreasonably at the beginning of the set, so he had only one left. In the end, he has only himself to blame for his decision. There were plenty of challenges during the match, it's normal in such a tight affair where players hit the line. The match went on for quite some time afterwards, so it's not like he didn't have other opportunities if he truly was the better player of the 2 (which he was not, meaning after the 1st set in which Novak seemed asleep, they BOTH played equally amazingly and deserve equal respect. As Djoko said, this match could have gone either way. Kudos to him for telling the truth and shame on the sore losers around here).

Actually, I do it all the time. My backhand is more consistent, has more variety, and can be more powerful than my forehand. And, yes, I use a one-handed backhand.

**** that was a great match. I'm glad I stayed up to watch the whole thing. I'm glad Novak won but you gotta feel for Stan. He put it all out there.

I really mean top level male players. I know tons of amateurs and WTA players do it but Wawrinka really shouldn't be. It was leaving him exposed too often.

Am I the only person who gets excited during these long rallies? (Is he going to return that ball? Is he? Is he? Yessss!!!) All right Novak!

Djokovic deserves his USO wins through and through. It's funny how you try to put words into my mouth because you can't argue against the relevant match. Djokovic lost today to Wawrinka. Wawrinka lost to a bad lines call. Face it, man.

Stan wins .... HAHAHA.

The last time checked australianopen.com, it informed me that Djoker had advanced to quarters. All the tennis records say so.

Which lala land are you living bro? I sure would like to visit and see the people living in denial!

Read my signature. Anyone who watched the match knows it's true. Fact.

Read your signature and do what? Anyone who watched the match knows who won. Its only you who keeps harping WAW would have, could have, probably won with a bunch of IFs.

If Waw won 6-4 in your lala land, be happy about it and get some sleep. Don't wake up and keep trolling.

What are the other records you maintain in your fantasy tennis record book? care to share? How many French opens has Fed won?

I believe they said that about Edberg, that he would sometimes run around his FH to hit a BH.

He did it all of the time... BTW Edberg and Stan the Man have the same BH grip (Guga too). That particular type of backhand stroke can generate the most ridiculous amount of spin and power and it is very stable. Also it gives the player more options/disguise than a forehand and he likely built his game around it. That is why it is a good idea for him to run around his forehand. It is his goto for good reason.

Federer has one French Open. Djokovic has zero. And Wawrinka deserved to win, and he did. And you know it.
