Novak fans, are you ready for 18?

LMAO Wishful thinking...

Novak almost won both Paris Masters and WTF in 2018, while having a flu that manifested itself with fever, coughing and runny nose. Other than testing positive for covid, both he and his wife suffered no symptoms of any kind (just like 80% of the people who test positive), so there is no driver for any damage to the lungs or body in general.
We really don't know until we see him play. Look at Dimitrov though. He will likely never be the player he was before infection.

What's going on with him has nothing to do with mental toughness though. Unless you think he's making it up.
Autosuggestion. Stress. Germaphobia.

Literally, Dimitrov himself speaks of it too:
Dimitrov said he has lost three kilos since contracting the virus, but added that the mental toll of isolating on your own can be as challenging as the virus' physical impact, saying he had been alone for 20 days.

"A lot of things are going through your head. It doesn't matter how mentally strong you are, as a person, athlete, or anything. It's inevitable to have some bad thoughts in your head.

"I had to deal with that, too. So does everybody else out there. That's one of my biggest messages: we should not underestimate the power of the mental state that everybody is in.
Anyway, he has already played exhibitions. He'll be fine.

This is kinda jinxy. On this platform Djokovic has little upside from this tournament. If he wins it will be seen as .5 by fed and rafa fans, if he loses he will be mocked by the same. Fact of the matter is Rafa and Fed have been money against the field, and Djokovic has been money against them. It is better for them to be in the tournament as they clean up next gen, whereas he has had issues with some of these guys

Djokovic wants a slam, not TTW accolades.

It will be interesting to see if Joe Kovid wins the USO, what the reaction will be with regards to coronavirus. Isn't the virus meant to be deadly, or at least permanently 'cripple' one's health? How can someone who has had such a severe virus win a major professional sporting event like nothing's ever happened? Hmmm....and here we are crippling economies, people losing their jobs and livelihoods and what have you.

If this was Melbourne, I'd go with Djokovic without a single doubt.
But at the U.S Open, I'm not feeling it.
I'm going with one of the Fab 4 this year (Thiem, Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas).

Me too. 3 Titles of 8 Finals is a bad record. If it were at Wimbledon I would be more confident.
Also have to factor in that there's been no tennis for the past 5 months. Djokovic needs time to acclimate to the tour. And it might be tougher for him at his age. There could be real resistance facing him on a hardcourt surface where he's not been particularly unstoppable.

Djokovic winning the whole thing will be huge a slap in the face for the Covid fanboys.

We all know very well that Federer had mononucleosis in 2008, yet he played in 3 Grand Slam finals that season and won the title at the US Open. When Fed could win the US Open after mononucleosis (the same disease ended Söderling's career), why couldn't Nole win the US Open after COVID? Nole had mild course of infection.

Isnt C19 the worst disease of all time?

All over and again (the same I wrote in this thread), the remarks "17.5" or "0.5 title" will be ridiculous and unfair in the context that Nole lost the chance to win Wimbledon 2020 due to the cancellation of the event.

Djoker was affected the most due to weeks at number one and losing out at a chance to win WC. That being said, Rafa felt he had to miss out at USO whether he chose it or not, so it seems pretty fair.

I'm rooting for Novak but I have a feeling it will be someone else winning it. I hope I'm wrong though.
I hope he does. It will mean Nadal hasn't won it. And it will also mean Novak is simultaneously one closer to Nadal.
I'd love to see someone new win it too though. Medvedev or Zverev.

I want Novak to win but these young guys have to breakthrough sometime and this is a graat chance for them since 2 of the big 3 will be missing, and Djokovic hasn't played a professional match on months.

Well, Covid shouldn't be compared to a normal flu.

I hope Novak is 100% healthy, but in this day and age we should stop equating Covid to anything.

Well a little of that can't be helped since Roger's so much older and had quite a head start on Nadovic! Unfortunately for him, half his major totals were acquired during a dead period of transition with his chief rival more a pigeon by the name of A-Rod! I'm not saying Djokovic had it tougher because I'm a fan; it's factual he's had to deal with the legend and fanaticism of the mass media that believe tennis begins and ends with Fedal! :cautious:
Oh, a Djokovic fan belittling one's competition, that's rich. The same Djokovic who has won more than half of his majors after Fedal declined.

People experience physical effects from mental stress and fear. It's chemistry.

I think that Dimitrov sees a sliver of truth, because he talked about mental pressure that everyone is under right now. He certainly believes that we're in the middle of deadly epidemic, hence the fear and physical experience of "all the symptoms" upon testing positive (IMO).

There also may be other unknown reasons why Dimitrov was sick. Because overwhelming percentage of people who test positive don't get sick, there is a question is the particle they are testing for really a cause of any illness. There are hundreds of trillions of similar particles in each of us at all times.

Djokovic experienced no symptoms and developed no disease, so he's fine. He doesn't believe we're in the middle of deadly epidemic and coincidentally, he and his wife just shrugged it off.

Besides, it's reasonable that these guys wouldn't just magically be in tough match form after tennis was suspended for 7 months or in Dimi's case after 20 days of mentally difficult isolation. But media will of course blame everything on covid.
