Novak learned his lesson?

To me, the most surprising thing today on court was Novak's attitude. He wasn't acting like an arrogant a-hole, even though he was winning. None of that stuff.

Perhaps after getting burned a couple of times in the last few months, he finally learned his lesson? I enjoy his game, but I couldn't stand that attitude of his. Hopefully that will fade into irrelevance, and he will gain new fans.

Anyone with me on this?

Oy vey, and you burn fed fans for making excuses for him? Djokovic was playing close to his best. He was in the 'zone.'

Yeah, I saw from his match with Murray last week, whilst he played poorly, he didn't seem to be bothered about it and didn't take him seriously. He saw tonight as an opportunity (regardless of whether Nadal was fatigued, that's not what history says) and you could see he was much more composed.

'He was ready to go home' is such a contradictory thing to say it's not funny. I'm a Nadal fan and I know that he would never have such an attitude. Nadal never wants to go home until the final match of the tournament and he will fight until it's not possible for him to stand on his own 2 legs anymore.

Djoker would win over Nadal's best anyway, and he didn't looked burned to me, cause he was running like crazy in 2nd set.

I agree and I think it helps his concentration and composure if he leaves his over excitable family back where ever they live.

At times he looked okay. Other times he looked way off. Mainly his reaction time was late. So the lack of sharpness is what hurt him. Probably more mentally tired than physically.

That's not an excuse. Five touraments wins with hardly any rest in between makes for a tired athlete. Anybody can see that!

How is that an excuse? That's common sense. We're not talking about light, or mono that may go on for two years. Winning the French, going straight to Queens, winning that, going to Wimbledon, winning that, going to Toronto, winning that, and then coming to Cincinnati and getting to the semifinals. You gotta be kidding if you think anyone wouldn't be tired with that schedule.

It's just not humanly possible to be 100% after all that tennis Nadal played. They should have a week off between Toronto and Cincinnati.

Where's Federer? What happened to him?The Fed Fans are on a tear trying to find something to gripe about. Can't stand that the #1 won't be next to his name I guess. That's what this is about and not a less than 100% Nadal. You guys will take anything to try to downgrade somebody and then wonder why people don't or won't respect Fed's achievements.

Well it's a good thing RAfa will have a tough opponent on (so called) hard courts because this will make him excell even more - but I hope he can do a Borg and not have to - the worry of injury is always there

when fed fans say it, it is an excuse, when nadal fans say it, it isn't. basically djokovic kicked nadals ass and you guys are in denial about how legit novaks win was.

Nadal was tired and if you can't see that, it's because you don't want to. Worry about Fed losing his #2 spot. Novak kicked his butt the last two times they played on hard court too! Legit, even the commentators disagree with you.

It's almost shocking how nonchalant he was during the whole match. I guess that's what happens when you storm out the gates 6-1. I never found his attitude annoying, though...and I sure hope he doesn't change his personality. He's a fun character the way he is.

And I've never heard anyone use tired as an excuse for Fed. It was the light, the mono, or he was ill. But at least Rafa made it to the semi's. Fed should have been out in the first match. He got lucky enough to go to the third round only to get beat by a guy he'd beaten six times straight.

Maybe, but to be a great player in any sport you have to be immensely confident internally, bordering on, or even being outright cocky. Some athletes have just chosen to hide it better than others. Even the "nice" great athletes are like this.

Good for him though, if he can hide some of his mannerisms it would make it easier for me to enjoy watching him. His game is pleasing to watch. Distancing himself from his family would probably win him some more fans.

Hey, TheLie, I watched all your posts and you always "downgraded" Federer in almost every of your posts. How can you handle double standards?

Nadal is a very good player, but I don't think he will resist as #1 very much. His game is pushing his body too much. He is prone to injuries and that will keep him from a dominant position as #1.

They are not excuses. They are facts that Nadal was tired. It would be a kneejerk reaction for anyone to put more into this match than that. Especially since Cinci is Nadal's least favorite tournament. Bad scheduling and speed of courts.

Yup,IMO Nadal fans have very similar behaviour to those same Fed fans they hate so much and are in some cases worse than them(I don't see Fed fans whining about conspiracy and draws every time)yet they still look down upon them and act like they're superior while at the same time making excuse for every single Nadal loss and making Fed should retire threads. With that said I do feel Nadal was somewhat fatiqued in Cinncinati,he had to be after all the tennis he played recently(he was on an incredible match streak) but still if Djokovic is in top form I expect him to beat Nadal on hardcourts as he's a better player on that surface.

TheTruth, you know I like you.

But let's try this:

Rafa was tired after winning 5 straight tournaments, AND
Nole played great tennis on his favorite surface (and left his family at home).

It doesn't have to be binary. Things can have more than one cause.

Let's leave Rogi out of this, OK?

Man, this is just a nursery school here. Looks like no one cares about good tennis and all that matters is whose "hero" is better. After half a year of mourning Fed fans are exulting at finally having an occasion to throw up on Rafa and Rafa's fans are angrily spitting back. And what I "like" the most - practically no one cares about Djoko, few people gave credit to him for a very good play. And the thread is about him.

SO hypocritical. Nadal being tired qualifies for a 'fact' and Federer having mono qualifies for an 'excuse'? This thread shows how truly blind/biased/delusional Nadal fanboys are.

I'm just curious. Any of you in here play a tennis match, lose and then say "I've been tired lately. Been playing too much"?

This thread is funny and interesting for me because one guy at my tennis club is always making excuses for his losses. The ones I hear all the time are:
"I didn't get enough sleep"
"I'm tired today"
"I have no energy/I feel lethargic"
"I'm just not feeling well today"

Well boo-f*ck*ng hoo. Kinda annoying when people make excuses. It's annoying because when people make excuses when they lose to me, I feel somewhat cheapened. It's as if the only reason I was able to beat them was because they were not at 100% and that I wasn't too much of a factor at all. Get bent I say.

EDIT: Oh and just for the record I like Nadal as well as Fed. I certainly don't like some of the Nadal fans on these forums. They're an embarrassment to their own hero. And whether Djokovic was a gentleman or arrogant jerk today it does not matter. Hats off to him for playing good tennis. Great idea leaving the crazy family home as well.

First of all, you've all ditched the original thread and gone into a tangent on one comment of a Nadal fan.

Second, no Ivan, i think this whole Djoko arrogance thing is in people's minds. I am not a Djoko fan, btw, but I think people like to believe this about Djoko. I hope he is in form though, would like to see the top three seeds (no, four) playing their best for the rest of the season.

I enjoy his game, but I couldn't stand that attitude of his. Hopefully that will fade into irrelevance, and he will gain new fans.

Exactly. Common sense escapes some people. Or maybe it´s that they´re still bitter. Add to that there were only 2 weeks between Wimbledon and Toronto this year, contrary to 4 weeks in previous years. If you look at the schedule this year what Nadal has done in the last 3 months is amazing. I am pleasantly surprised that he made the SF in Cincinnati.

Tell me one tennis player that didn´t miss a tennis match and won 8-6 in the 5th set having mono.
Ancic had mono last year and was off the courts about 6 months. Honestly it´s hard to believe that Federer was so affected by whatever he had and there´s no evidence of that. Is he playing better now than in January? Definitely not.
Nadal played 9 matches in the last 11 days after a grueling schedule in the last 3 months, those are the facts.
You should be more quiet calling others names on this subject.

I agree. And when was the last time Federer won 5 tournaments in a row of which 2 slams and 2 MS on 3 different surfaces? Oh wait, when was the last time any player did that? Maybe noone else did because of how exhausting it would be...

Without any wish to enter this debate, I'd still like to point out that Mario's mono was severely aggravated by his playing a DC match because at the time they thought it was just a flu. The two cannot be compared, nor the time needed to fully recover, but Ancic was able to play some excellent and highly exhausting matches in Wimbledon and is now again sidelined, arguably because he's entire immune system is still not at its best. I doubt even physicians can make exact assessments to what extent Fed was/is affected, meaning that the issue is moot regardless whether it is argued it has an effect or not.

it was confirmed he had mono, but to what degree is unknown. it explained the couple losses at the beginning of the year, which his results back up. i think it's safe to say it's not mono anymore that's bothering him. and he'll agree.

That´s the key. Considering he didn´t miss a tennis match and he won a marathon 5 setter against Tipsarevic I would say the degree of whatever illness he had was really low. He played really well in some matches at the AO.

"You cannot be serious" as someone would say. There are very few people who can beat Nadal whether it is on HC, grass, and especially clay (it seems it's nearly impossible at this moment). Does not matter whether he is tired or not. He is "ALWAYS" tired the way he plays and is "NEVER" tired at the same time if you know what I mean. He is like the energizer bunny (with extra batteries on his bench) ...
