Novak learned his lesson?

^and what that has to do with Novak and this thread?

It doesn't,it turned into another childish Fed-Nadal argument mostly thanks to Nadal fans who are bitter about this loss even though their guy is having an amazing year winning everything in sight.I personally liked the way Novak acted yesterday(all focused and business-like) in a match and I find it refreshing that his parents weren't there for a change.

"You cannot be serious" as someone would say. There are very few people who can beat Nadal whether it is on HC, grass, and especially clay (it seems it's nearly impossible at this moment). Does not matter whether he is tired or not. He is "ALWAYS" tired the way he plays and is "NEVER" tired at the same time if you know what I mean. He is like the energizer bunny (with extra batteries on his bench) ...
I have no idea what you mean. He's human and can get tired like anybody else.

don't worry, they'll be coming to the USO. i'll be expecting djokovic to have the same attitude he had at the AO during the semis and final.

To me, the most surprising thing today on court was Novak's attitude. He wasn't acting like an arrogant a-hole, even though he was winning. None of that stuff.

Perhaps after getting burned a couple of times in the last few months, he finally learned his lesson? I enjoy his game, but I couldn't stand that attitude of his. Hopefully that will fade into irrelevance, and he will gain new fans.

Anyone with me on this?

Actually I restart to like him since yesterday. Novak didn't do any of the chest pounding and the angry glaze at Nadal during that match. I might even make him my Lendl #2 if he continues to well behave on the court, since I didn't like Lendl initially either. :)

Tell me one tennis player that didn´t miss a tennis match and won 8-6 in the 5th set having mono.
Ancic had mono last year and was off the courts about 6 months. Honestly it´s hard to believe that Federer was so affected by whatever he had and there´s no evidence of that. Is he playing better now than in January? Definitely not.
Nadal played 9 matches in the last 11 days after a grueling schedule in the last 3 months, those are the facts.
You should be more quiet calling others names on this subject.

No, I shouldn't. I clearly reinforced the point that when Nadal fans make a reason for him losing, it's just a fact, and when Federer fans make a reason for him losing, it's labeled an 'excuse'? It's a double standard. It's hard to believe that Fed had mono? Right.. because he was only diagnosed with it. Nadal fanboys are all the same. Way to credit Djokovic on such a great match, too. But I'm sure Nadal would've won if the match was a day earlier? Keep dreaming.

It depends for how many years you plan on using it...
How many years have you heard people use mono as an excuse for Roger? Have people told you how many years they intend on using it as an excuse?
Please, don't overdo it.

They are not excuses. They are facts that Nadal was tired. It would be a kneejerk reaction for anyone to put more into this match than that. Especially since Cinci is Nadal's least favorite tournament. Bad scheduling and speed of courts.
Since when did it become a fact? It's supposition, not fact.
Knowing you you probably have made an inspection on Nadal's feet for blisters and offered lewd services to his physician for an inside diagnosis on his general fitness. I wouldn't put it past you my love.

How is that an excuse? That's common sense. We're not talking about light, or mono that may go on for two years. Winning the French, going straight to Queens, winning that, going to Wimbledon, winning that, going to Toronto, winning that, and then coming to Cincinnati and getting to the semifinals. You gotta be kidding if you think anyone wouldn't be tired with that schedule.
Yeah but now where is the high-and-mighty rhetoric about how Federer fans are the only ones who put down tiredness and illness and poor light as excuses? Surely you should be above all this. ;) Basically you are starting to act the same, and in time perhaps even worse, than those Fedfans. Nadal is a very good player, but I don't think he will resist as #1 very much. His game is pushing his body too much. He is prone to injuries and that will keep him from a dominant position as #1.

Since when has being a big fan of a certain player make you gay? That is the farthest thing from my mind when in competitive sports. They are like the opposites. I do root for the better looking women most of the times though. :D Ana Ivanovic, Maria Kirilenko, Elena Dementieva, and etc. I don't get involved in women's tennis because rooting for someone just because they look good is kind of lame. It's about your favorite style of play. I prefer the baseline grinders style (Nadal, Andreev, and Monfils) over the aggressive baseliners. (Djokovic, Blake, Berdych...)

I know it´s not the point of this thread but I´m not the one who turned this one into a Fed-Nadal discussion, go to page 1 and see.
I didn´t say that Federer didn´t have mono or some sort of illness in a low degree but I think it didn´t affect his game as much as some people want to believe and I provided some (valid IMO) arguments in my previous posts, never said it was an "excuse".
Nobody can deny how many matches Nadal played lately, then you´re free to think it affected his game or not that day. Personally I said Djokovic playing great was also a factor in the match. Talking of giving credit, not sure how much credit he got for his AO semifinal match.
And don´t label Nadal and Federer fans as a whole, it´s a mistake even though there are some tendencies I have seen in the last 2 years and quite frankly the average Nadal fan has been way more respectful.

Mono isn't a sufficient excuse? You're an absolute Nadal troll.

Federer announced himself in tip-top condition before the tournament began, and throughout. Weeks after he lost he said he was sluggish during the tournament. But his transcripts say otherwise. Please don't call me a troll because we disagree. I don't think you're a troll because of our different views. I read constantly, before, during and after a tournament so when the mono came up months later it sent a red flag, because I knew he had declared himself fit on more than one occasion. Federer feeling tip-top
Sunday, 13 January, 2008
By Luke Buttigieg

World number one Roger Federer has shrugged off his lack of match practice in the lead-up to Australian Open 2008, saying he is feeling in top shape as he begins his campaign for a third-straight title at Melbourne Park.

But the three-time Australian Open champion told reporters on tournament eve, a couple of days before he was to take on Argentine Diego Hartfield in the first round, that he is ready for action.

"I've been playing sets the last couple days, you know, which was very important for me, to be able to play points. I'm happy with my form, to be honest. Very pleased. Physically I'm fine now, too. No more issues. I would consider myself a hundred per cent."

Federer added that while the stomach illness that temporarily hospitalised him last week had taken a bit of a toll, he believes the work he did in December before coming to Australia will hold him in good stead.

"I practiced very well in Dubai before coming here, so I definitely, you know, created a good base for this fortnight," he said. "That's what I feel now when I get back on the practice courts. You know, I feel the way I would like to feel."

Q. Was it just food poisoning that you had? Do you feel completely better?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I'm fine now, like nothing ever happened, which is a good thing.

Q. And it was food poisoning?
ROGER FEDERER: Apparently. That's what they told me, and I believed it. I've moved on now mentally. I'm past being sick. Looking forward to a healthy couple of weeks hopefully.

Roger Federer 19.01.08
Saturday, 19 January, 2008 (After Janko)

Q. Given the recent illness, was there any stage where it particularly set in and you felt you were getting low on the tank?

ROGER FEDERER: I just felt slow from the start really. No, I mean, I'm happy that the sickness didn't bother me today in the match, and that's what I told you guys. I wasn't bluffing or anything. I thought I was ready for those matches, and I proved it tonight, which is nice.

Q. Any effects from the five-set match the other night? Defeat Berdych

ROGER FEDERER: I felt good. Of course, it throws off your rhythm a little bit, playing a five-setter, especially during a tournament. Usually I play five-setters in finals, like in Miami, Rome, Wimbledon. So it's a bit different to back it up.
But honestly, I felt good. Looking forward to see how I feel in the next match again.

At age 26, He has also been struggling with his health. Last month, after falling ill for the third time in six weeks, he underwent extensive tests in his native country of Switzerland and his part-time residence of Dubai. According to Federer, the conclusion was that he had contracted mononucleosis.
Federer already had been diagnosed with food poisoning prior to the Australian Open, which severely disrupted his preparation for that tournament, eventually won by Djokovic. But Federer, who complained of feeling sluggish during the Open, said it now appears that the mononucleosis was the more serious issue.
"The doctors said I must have had it for at least six weeks, which went all the way back to December," Federer said in a telephone interview from Dubai, explaining that he had now been medically cleared to compete.
Federer said he was unable to practice for about 10 days in February and received medical clearance to begin training normally five days before the tournament in Dubai began on Monday.

How could he have not known he was feeling sluggish?

Rafa was tired after winning 5 straight tournaments, AND

It doesn't have to be binary. Things can have more than one cause.

Let's leave Rogi out of this, OK?

I just think it's silly to know someone is tired and try to pretend that's it's an excuse when the evidence speaks to the contrary.

There isn't a thread on here that I've ever seen about Fed and tiredness. You're stretching. 5 tournaments back to back is a no-brainer. Light is an excuse because they both played in the same conditions. The mono I've posted about because I read the interviews pre, during, and post, and Fed's answers don't quite get it. And speaking of high and mighty, you're not doing so bad yourself. Top dog? Is that what you think? No, how about he wasn't going to do this, or that, and now it's being rubbed back in people's faces, who can't handle it I might add. P.S.-no one can act worse than those Fed Fans. It isn't possible.

I don't think Nadal will change his attitude after be
coming number 1 but his fans probably will.

If you disagree, it's ok, but this is the way I see it.

These threads really show that most of the people who post here are not serious Tennis fans. Any serious longtime fan of the game appreciates the accomplishments of both Nadal and Federer and know how truly lucky we are to be able to enjoy watching both of them on the court. It seems that what we have here are people who seem to have some sort of teenage crush on certain players and can't think beyond that.

About Djokovic. Yes, he is steadily learning to behave properly. I believe he actually is a nice person who wasnt quite ready for the big stage. Leaving his family out of this is a good decision. 4. I'm sure everyone could be like The Dark Knight if they just tried!
5. Thanks.. I'm not sure what you're getting at?
