Novak, not such a bad guy?

Ok I'm a huge Fed fan so you might guess how NJ has made me feel recently.

Never really liked his personality for some reason. But today he referenced his son and said that he is motivated "to play better for his boy".

Pretty cool thing to say. Gotta give him props.

Who wouldn't say something like that as a father? He's never been a bad guy off court.

He got all fuzzy and warm talking on game, set and mats ( with their terrible production) about his son. He wants him to come and watch him win, etc.

Yeah, just being a loving Dad.

I never understand why people don't like Novak Djokovic. Seems like a lot of people on this board don't like him.

To me the guy seems one of the most sincere and friendly players out there. Always taking time for interviews, signing autographs, the answers he gives in interviews. The best thing about Djokovic is his handshake after a match. I have the impression that he is the "loser" on the ATP tour.

I'm a pretty big fan of Djokovic.

Most people don't dislike Djokovic, most just don't mind/don't care (pick one) about him.

I like him off the court. He is more fun to take the mickey our of than Fed or Nadal, but I like him. He has the best handshakes out of the top players regardless of winning or losing. He can act poorly on court sometimes, but whatever.....

I don't hate the guy, I like to see him play because obviously he's an excellent player and an all time great. But his on court behaviour is just unbecoming of a world number 1, of a professional who has the eye of the world on him.

Nevermind his early antics, he still acts like a brat on court, just last year he kicked the on court clock, in Shanghai I think. Racket aggression is understandable, but kicking things on court is rather unpleasant. I also don't like his animalistic screams, he does them at odd times too, not only at the end of a hard match, break point mid set sometimes.

Most of Djok's demeanor is quite likeable. Some of the post-match celebrations from early on were over the top but he has toned that down, just as his parents' feistiness in the box has dwindled. His imitations are absolutely hilarious!

Novak is absolutely a nice guy.

Like you OP, the only reason I bear any resentment towards him is because of his victories over Federer (especially the 2014 ones).
Him beating Roger at Wimbledon soured my opinion of him I have to admit.

Otherwise, great guy both on and off court.
I like how he wears his heart on his sleeve, would actually like him to do it more (on-court celebrations etc.)

It's a very ordinary thing for any dad to say. I don't think it does anything to dispel the aura of negativity he projects on court in recent times. It's almost as if Murray has been coaching him on how to turn off neutrals.

Not a soul. But in tennis all we have to judge someone on is their attitude on court and their game. Off court, he seems awesome.

I think his behaviour in that particular match could be attributed to his opponent. Servebots are very frustrating for me to watch so I can only imagine what they're like for him to play against.

The best thing I get out of this is that he has found new inspiration to keep fighting hard, and that can only be great for the sport.

For you it might be, but he is the world #1 and he should deal with those things with class :)

I think that sums up what I think of his attitude, as a fan. As soon as the match ends, he the friendliest and funniest player around (yes, including the shirt ripping.) The antics during the match are Andy Murray-worthy sometimes though.

Agree. But what he did to the linesman was very bad. Deserved at least to be fined. Just imagined if Nadal did that. There would be at least 20 threads about it.

I'm sure what he did to the linesman wasn't intentional. Like I said, nobody's perfect.

I don't know if it was or it wasn't, but it's not an excuse. Lets say one day I pay a visit to you and accidentally shoot you in the knee and say that it wasn't intentional

Mr. Curt "Perfect" Henning. Great!

Perfect could have a match with a broomstick and still make it look excellent. And he was just as great outside of the ring, no one ever had a bad thing to say about him.

When a player hits a ball boy with a ball, I think this behaviour could be attributed to the player who's done that.

I don't care enough about him to be "appaled". But he doesn't do himself any favors cursing out the crowd, breaking racquets and hitting a ballboy.

I agree..There should be more celebrations like this:

Rafa-Duck_zps98552f86.gif

Or Celebrations like Gorilla when your opponent is limping due to injury (Madrid final).

Or bumping an opponent.

Well its not ony that he beat Fed in the US Open final when fed had a match point or that he nearly made us all go crazy beating him at Wimbly....Its also the way he acts on court. He has off putting mannerisms. I think what he said about his son was from the heart. Maybe its just an issue of maturity. Sometimes we forget how young these guys are.

Btw- speaking of behavior I visited the mcenroe youtube channel and saw the davis cup match in CT vs Becker. Could not believe JM's behavior TOTALLY changed the pace of the game. His behavior took over the arena like a problem child. Hard to think of anyone acting like that now. Such a different time.
