Novak to play Monte Carlo

It proves that he lives in Monte Carlo and rides his bike to the tournament.
If he didn't care about Masters 1000, he wouldn't play the Montecarlo optional, no matter how near it is of where he lives. If Queens were located in Mallorca, Nadal would not play it.

Incorrect. If he didn't care about Masters 1000, he wouldn't play the optional Montecarlo, no matter how near it is of one of his houses (he has more houses in Miami and Serbia).
Why wouldn't Novak care about the Masters, as they are the most prestigious events outside the slams?

Is playing M1000s from 32/33 old players big news now?

I guess that that puts in a context the claims about the newfound longevity of the players.

Are you unaware that Nadal has played Queen's multiple times and won the event in 2008?

Fed was playing the optional Monte Carlo several times after it became optional.

2016 post knee surgery.
2015
2014 (lost final to Stan)

Monte Carlo is where he lives and so it is, for all intents and purposes, his home tournament. He doesn't have to travel to get there or look for hotel accommodation so why wouldn't he play it as part of his claycourt preparation?

Not surprised at all. I always felt he should play MC instead of Madrid. The latter's condition is not good prep for RG.

Lol yeah.

Generally, I don't think Djokovic doesn't care about 1000s, I just think he took a very long time off after winning Australia. He specifically cited a lack of tennis as a reason for playing doubles. He'll try harder to play great in tournaments like Rome right ahead of the French.

I think a similar thing happened in Toronto/Cinci.

Makes sense as he lives there, won the event before even has a 3-3 record with Nadal there. Can always skip Madrid if he goes far at MC

Well of course he cares about masters, so agree there. There will be some that he will skip but I do think the fact that he lives there makes it an easy decision to play since there is no travel involved. For instance if he lived in Rome and was only going to play 2 clay masters he would probably play Rome and drop one of the others. Djokovic in general though has played most masters every year, he's skipped very few.

Can't really compare queens since it's not a masters and Nadal often needs a break after dominating clay season. He has played either Halle or queens in 2004-2008, skipped all grass in 2009, played in 2010-2012, 2014-2015 (played Stuttgart and Queens in 2015) skipped all grass in 2016. So really 2013, 2017 and 2018 are the only years he's played Wimbledon and not played Halle or Queens. However they are also the only warmup events on grass and Djokovic has 3 on clay, but that's another reason you can't compare

However do you think if instead of Barcelona there was a 500 in Italy, Nadal would play that every year in the congested clay stretch?

Which means Zzzzzz

Not at all, Fed is not certain to win by any stretch of the imagination, could be Zverev, Theim perhaps others. Makes the end result a bit uncertain which it usually isn't, a bit of new blood is good. "zzzz" is Nadal at MC without Djokovic, though Novak could lose early and it'll be another Nadal strolls to the title scenario. Which isn't epic ;)

Epic is Nadal winning MC with Djokovic in the draw, which is a real possibility :D #SavageJesus

Yeah, well epic is them facing off and either player winning (in a 3rd set for ultimate epicness)

Madrid would be a snoozer if Fed was certain to win but if both Nadal and Djokovic don't play, there will be a lot of players feeling they could win which is actually refreshing for a change on clay. We've seen it on HC especially in Paris and Thiem was a bit of a surprise, so was Isner last year, Delpo not so much I guess. I think it's good to have a balance btween the big three and unexpected winners

I think so. Nadal loves to play almost everything on clay.

It's just to keep the rythm. He wouldn't have played it if he had gone far in Indian Wells. He just needs tournamentw right now.

Just a theory going around lately to explain his losses. Even though they're completely explainable without having to make excuses for him.
  • IW was his first tournament in 2 months
  • He was sick in Paris, and worn down from his SF
  • Zverev served out of his mind in the YEC final
Not to mention Bo3 is easier to upset, and there's a decent chance he would've won all those matches over Bo5. And the guy's simply getting older, so it's harder to maintain his level week-in and week-out. And apparently no one likes to talk about Cincinnati & Shanghai.
