They should redate the Laureus Award year to the year it's being awarded for.

This is being awarded for Novak's 2019 season, and everyone under consideration had their accomplishments in 2018 considered. When we say Novak has won 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2019 we mean he was awarded the award for 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018.

Either way, great honor for Djokovic! Congrats to him and his team and hope for a great 2019!

I am just amazed at the depth of his thinking. Truly Remarkable. Easily if he had been a scientist, he would have won a Nobel Prize.

Thought this prestigious award is worth a thread of its own.
Congrats to Novak! A more thoughtful tennis player the world has not seen.
One guy’s won six of them.

The award has turned into the Tennis Player of the Year award with some Usain Bolt thrown in, who is now retired.

I'm sitting on the fence with how to read you here. I'll err on the side of intended sarcasm and hyperbole because of the words "easily" and "would have". ;)

Is the award a big deal in Europe? It gets no press coverage in the States. It also seems biased towards individual sports. There have been years where athletes like Lebron or Messi should've won.

So Jelena basically confirmed what we all knew from the jump:

She was the reason that was holding Djokovic back from achieving GOAT status.

Articulate, thoughtful, intellectual, cares about others, etc.

It's a shame that many posters have convinced themselves that he's unlikable because he occasionally loses his cool (98% self-directed) or used to rip his shirt off, or some other flimsy grounds. As for another great male tennis player who is this smart and thoughtful, I have to go back to the late, great Arthur Ashe.

Let's not put Djokovic as more "intellectual" than Federer or Nadal. He is for sure a very smart guy, but not necessarily the most intelligent tennis player on the tour.

I am sure Fedal would destroy Djokovic in an intellectual game like chess.

Look at the awful board position:

I'm somewhat intellectual, but, well, suck at chess. (I wish I took an interest, or showed greater aptitude for it, as my dad lived chess.)

My post wasn't to knock Roger or Rafa, but of the great players over the many years I've followed, Novak (other than Ashe) impresses me the most in those dimensions. Sure, this is subjective, though I think fair.

Agassi also had some of that eclectic, searcher mentality - given to self-reflection - but he always came off as a little shallow to me.

There is definitely untold part of the story. But thankfully that IS behind Novak and they are happy together again.

it's not so awful, black pieces lacked in development(it can not be dangerous for whites with only two pieces in play for blacks) it tells becker not a good chess player(or don't know about debut principles), but white pieces did it better, queen side of whites also is much weaker, but white pieces can bring in big problems on a king side.. it's funny how djoko lost these pawns especially considering a fact that becker played only with his queen and a knight), then whites can even make it better position for the win with right moves afterwards, probably it's blacks' turn to make a move..we also don't know about next stages of this game..because it's just the beginning(debut),yes probably after next move queen a2 whites will be without 3 pawns but it's not so crucial if you're not a pro chess player)

Sorry, but Djokovic has lost 2 pawns and is about to lose his third one, since it is Becker's turn. And 3 pawns down is a crucial disadvantage, 3 pawns down is the equivalent of being one knight or one bishop down. Djokovic needs a miracle to win that game (even though Becker is not Bobby Fischer precisely).

I am no chess grandmaster but I would far rather be in Becker's position on that board than Djokovic's.
