And I really like Novak (clear GOAT IMO) but unique history.

Now an OE record (for men at least) 6 Finals losses at a single Slam.

2007 Federer
2010 Nadal
2012 Murray
2013 Nadal
2016 Wawrinka
2021 Medvedev

A 15 year gap between birth years of opponents also a record (Rosewall surpsingly only 7 years between Connors & Roche despite holding largest single age difference in any Slam Final).

Lendl was previous holder with 5 also coincidentally at USO (Borg, Becker, Novak at FO, Fed x2, Nadal all with 4)

Wow, clay king Nadal got him twice! In what world then is Nole the HC GOAT when he can't even beat a dirt baller on HC more often than not.

USO continues to be the least predictable slam. There really is something to it when we say the players are more tired by September and the hard courts present more threats to them in the modern game. And god knows in most years no one has put more work in than Novak, considering how seriously he always took the Masters series.

Medvedev now the 6th player since the Big 3 era started (I'm using 2003) to win his maiden slam in New York. Joins Roddick, Delpo, Murray, Cilic and Thiem. No one breaks through anywhere else. It's just Stan in Australia.

Should not count against him imo, he’s done well to make so many finals.

Rafa’s lost 4 at AO, to Novak twice, Stan, and Fed. All players were playing fantastically and Rafa pushed the AO GOATs (at the time) to 5 sets 3 times. I don’t count those against Rafa but as a point of pride.

I almost wonder if Rafa could’ve made 2 more AO finals the last 2 years but saw Novak’s draw was too easy and didn’t want to waste the effort. But nah, he’s just getting old.

Very true, combination of timing, surface, and environment (huge stadium, weird wind, noise/lights, humidity, in the past Super Saturday scheduling) always makes it the hardest to play your best and cleanest game at USO compared to the other slams. Imagine someone predictably winning it like clockwork 5 straight years? What a feat that would be.

Who's this "we"? More like I've been saying it for years and you plebs have been slowly catching up.

And I should remind y'all I've nailed just about every major event this year, be it RG, the Olympics or this USO. Oh and I also said Med would win a HC major following the AO and cautioned (in the nuked thread, IIRC) against comparing him with A-Rod too soon.

Moral of the story: when I say I'm right about everything I pay attention to, you jokers better believe it! BOAT = Pistol, GOAT = Navratilova. And S&V is still viable in the right hands.

I have no idea what this means in relation to Rosewall’s US final opponents. I assume you mean in the open era? Because Rosewall played Trabert in 1955 (born in 1930) and played Connors in 1974 ( born in 1952)….that’s a 22 year gap between birth years of opponents

Nole also beat Nadal at French open two times, where he is far more dominant than any other player on any other surface at any other slam.
In what world then is Nadal the CLAY GOAT when he can't even beat a weak era champ on French open all the time??

The scheduling mostly in my opinion. Obviously Nadal has ruled clay so consistency there but otherwise you'd typically expect WMB & USO champs to cross over after Pete & Roger made it a staple (Connors & McEnroe having success too). But after Wimbledon you have an interesting situation with the back to back USO series Masters, in closer proximity than the Sunshine Double which of course takes place after AO.

Such as it is with points and warm up, players either overplay if contending both or have a gap in performance. There are also certain caveats such as Nadal not defending two titles and being hampered in another defense. Novak usually playing a heavy schedule and being insanely consistent but not finishing (and in part due to draws).

Yeah OE because when he faced Connors it was a 17 year gap for him but not as big a gap between opponents. And Connors had recently turned 22 while Rosewall would soon turn 40, so nearly 18.

Not worthy of being called Hardcourt GOAT with such stats in US Open.

Sampras and Federer have better conversion rate.

How many FOs does Nadal have and how many FOs does Djokovic have?

How many USOs does Nadal have and how many USOs does Djokovic have?

In any rational and reasonable world? Because he won the most HC Slams in total. The lost finals are the next thing ADDED to his claim after the titles, and not the opposite. And if he loses to great opponents instead of weaker ones, then this is another positive if he has to lose at all.

And for your statement "he can't even beat a dirt baller on HC more often than not" just look up their total H2H record on HC which is more lopsided than the one on clay in the other direction. Even if H2H means nothing anyway, if bringing it as an argument then at least do it correctly.

What a complete failure of a post, and I have to say this as a Federer fan.

Just think about it this way: Which other name could one bring up as HC GOAT instead of Djokovic without making a total fool out of oneself? Remember, 12 HC Slams and most Masters by far on HC etc.

the point genius is that there is no such thing as HC GOAT, only specific slam GOATs. Other wise a 20-slam clay winner = a 4 x 5 slam winner since all surfaces can be reduced to total slams. i.e. surface is arbitrary categorization, slams are not.

Losing in the final is better than losing before the final. He is very consistent at the USO, despite only 3 titles.
Exactly. Getting to a Slam final is an accomplishment in and of itself. It looks pretty good on a resume, even though winning it is the ultimate prize. All of the greats have losses in Slam finals. Only on TTW is runner-up at a major something to laugh at or ridicule.

Of course, most of those ridiculing expect us to think that losing early rounds is the same thing as losing in the final.
