I think he, Mr. Federer, mentioned at least once during an interview that he tried the double-hander before and just couldn't get it to feel natural to him.

I can relate to that. My several attempts at the double-handed backhand during my juniors have all turned out lukewarm at best. It became a liability more than a weapon. People who can hit the double-handed backhand well have my respect.
