Now, I know why pros can play for over 5 hours while amateurs can't*

Because we have to pick up our own balls!!!

*Well, at least, I can't; last night, after 3 hours, I could barely walk out of the court :(

Actually it's because they train themselves rather than sit on their butts reading the TW messageboards.

And the rest of us, who AREN'T little rich spoiled kids, and certainly CAN'T pay anyone 50 bucks!?

50 american bucks are 150 pesos, which is the equivalent of renting a great claycourt for 10 and a half hours!

Just get a 50 ball hopper and get a couple out every time your pockets are empty. When a ball comes out too far from the net, sweep it off to the side or back into the net. Pick them all up with the hopper when youre done and its easy. Its kind of a waste of time to pick up balls all the time when you can just grab one out of the hopper.

The one time it really, really bugs me is when its the slow roll back to the middle of the court after netting a first serve. You just missed the first serve (in the net, which always seems worse), and now you have to jog to the middle of the court, bend down and pick the ball up, and then try to hit your (in my case) crappy second serve. If I do it a few times in a row, or multiple times spread over a few games, I tend to turn into John McEnroe.

Other than that, picking up your own balls probably leads to more downtime during a match than the pros get. The walk/jog ball-retrieval is a good way to conserve energy if you're getting tired.

I think that the real reason that everybody else in the world plays better than me is because they can pick up a ball with their racket. You've seen it! They tap a stationary ball with the upper part of the strings of their racket twice or thrice and the ball bounces high enough to just grab it with their other hand, without bending over too far. Must be great for hand-eye coordination . . . cause I sure can't do it.

The squeezing of the ball between the racket and outside of one's foot, then lifting together is the sissy way of picking up a ball. Sure would like to learn the bounce pickup technique. Makes it look like they really know what they are doing out there on the courts.
