Watching Novak walk off the court injured last night did reinforce a statement in my mind - We are really blessed and fortunate to have such titans of the sport still go out there and fight the biggest fights, understanding that it can all be over in a blink of an eye. No one is invincible, but that is what makes them special, mortals touching the heights of immortality, but still yet remaining mortal. For me, back in 2016, when Djokovic completed the career slam, I said I was content with his career, even if he never won anything after that, for me, someone who has supported him through his darkest times, to his brightest moments, I was happy with what he achieved. Then came the iconic rising from the ashes at Wimbledon 2018 after two years lost in an ever downward spiral of chaos, and what followed was something very few imagined...winning four out of five slams.
Him losing today was easy to accept, the journey is one which is all too familiar for any great, and one Novak himself has been on more than once...You appreciate the success more when you reflect on the losses, and this is why I have incredible respect and admiration for the two trail blazers that came before him, Federer and Nadal. I really hope both make the final, it doesn't matter to me that Federer gets 21 or Nadal gets 19 and they pull further away Djokovic in the slam race, I never watched tennis for that, or cheered Novak on back when he had nothing so he could one day have the slam record....I want it because Federer and Nadal are two of the greatest champions in any sport, ever. For them to continue to do what they have done for so long is so mind boggling, words cannot truly describe it.
Nothing against the other players, at the end of the day, whoever lifts that trophy deserves it, but to finally get that Federer v Nadal final, no matter the result will be like their final curtain call. The one thing that these two incredible icons have yet to do, have yet to give us...A USO final. Federer fans....Nadal fans....I hope your guys make it, and I hope they blow the roof off of Ashe.
As for Novak, he'll be back. Never count a champion out.
