Once Federer wins the WTF he just has to go to the nearest embassy and fill out all the paperwork required to become a citizen of either France or Belgium and then play the Davids Cup final.

After adding up all these points I think he surpasses Nadal in the rankings and should immediately take the trophy off Nadal's hands.

Once he's done with the season, he could apply for the Swiss citizenship again if he wants to.

Nope. He'd be over 125 points down, so a single Challenger win isn't enough.

Nope, but next year if Nadal goes out very early at the AO Federer might be able to become #1 with a deep run at AO and Dubai title.

Nice idea but the ITF recently implemented new rules that won't allow anyone to play Davis Cup for more than 1 country no matter how often they may change citizenship. Just look at the trouble Aljaz Bedene has had in applying to play DC for his adopted country, GB (got turned down by the ITF because he once played a dead rubber for Slovenia)? Federer has already played for Switzerland so he can't play for anyone else!

Vultures gonna vulture? Even if there were eligible rankings points available by using such a method (there aren't) Federer, Nadal and co. are above such opportunistic behaviours.

If Fed wins WTF unbeaten, he might grab number one even prior to AO, by winning Brisbane or Doha.

He shouldn't. He has relinquished the number one without a fight far too many times now. If winning a 250 is all it takes, he should grab his chance.

Yea, I think Davis cup now gives Points. top players had NO reason to play davis cup and they were skipping it like it is on herpes. but now with points, more players participate. but even if Federer plays for Belgium, he has to win his matches. I think Tsonga and Monfils is too strong for him in davis cup

He's already said he would not go out of his way to play 250's to gain tournament victories or to regain the #1 ranking. He can't play Brisbane because he's contracted to play the Hopman Cup and they're played at the same time.

So let's take Doha, which he could play. Still, it's just not something he would do. Federer is not just a tennis player, he is a world-wide business empire. Imagine this scenario: he enters Doha and everyone knows it's for one reason: to get #1. But he loses in the third round and goes home empty handed and is still #2. He wouldn't take that risk, nor would he mess with his meticulous planning for the event that matters: the AO.

He can hope Nadal loses early and if Fed just reaches the semis, he'll be #1.

Yes. I posted this in another thread.

ATP Rule Book (Ch VII, Rule 7.07, A1):

    1) Players positioned 1-10 in the Emirates ATP Rankings twenty-one (21) days prior to the first Monday of the ATP Challenger Tour tournament are prohibited from entering, accepting a wild card and/or competing in an ATP Challenger Tour tournament. Players who would have been, had they and all other players entered, a direct acceptance on the original acceptance list for a Grand Slam are prohibited from entering, accepting a wild card and/or competing in an ATP Challenger Tour tournament in the first week of the Grand Slam tournament.

Thanks for the correction, I think you're correct.

If Roger wins the WTF the standings will be:
    Nadal 10645
    Federer 10505

That's only 140 points and Rafa has 45 pts to defend from Brisbane last year.

But to be fair, that means a win at Doha or Sydney could mean #1 for Federer should be decide to play a points tournament rather than the Hopman Cup. Nadal could go out at SF or before and Federer could win, giving him the #1 before the AO.
