aussie open showed us a lot of new things, and one of them was the versatility in the new gonzo forehand. he no longer tries to end points right after the first ball and is actually quite federer-esque in looking for ways to hit that big forehand and look for a put-away sitter. it used to be fed with the sole greatest forehand in tennis with unmatched shotmaking and amazing variety whereas gonzo would just be whacking away, but we have seen a new side of gonzo. so, after watching some brilliant tennis from these two guys the past 2 weeks, who would you say has the best forehand in tennis?

Federer. Gonzalez has made his forehand more versatile and consistent, but Federer's is still more versatile and consistent despite that improvement, and can hit it just as hard.

lets not be kidding ourselves....federer can use his forehand tactically, and can finish off a point with one swing off that right side at anytime he wants....:)

Reasonable people can disagree. It's just that when someone has a LIFE off the court and a PERSONALITY, they may win fewer matches than some swiss competition robot nerd.

Reasonable people tend to call Safin's talent wasted while Fed's making history.

Gonzalez does have a great forehand, which has even improved recently, however this poll shows how much the "what have you done for me lately" or the "now" mindset of comes into play too much. If you make this same poll after the event some other player has a hot event in say 6 months, and either wins it or loses in the final to Federer, and if that persons best shot is there forehand, they will probably get a quarter of the votes as Federer and 4times the votes of Roddick/Blake and everyone else combined too, while Gonzalez will then be in the group with a quarter of the votes of that forehand guy who just had 1 really hot event.

Federer has the best forehand. Why? Because anytime any other 'Best Forehand' candidate plays Federer, Federer's forehand plays superior to theirs, and that's the ultimate test.

You could use the same rationale re: the serve - Federer's is the best there, too.

Nope, Karlovic has the best serve on the ATP, probably followed by Safin and J. Johannson. Federer would be in the top 10 though.

Remember that ultra cross forehand in the final of the Aussi Open? That's why Federer's forehand is better. It's more versatile and he hits his forehand easier than Fernando. You could see that when he engaged in a forehand rally with Gonzo, I think Federer won almost every single one of them.

Dollars to doughnuts, if Fed plays Karlovic anywhere at anytime, he beats him (well, that's no surprise) and he also out-stats Karlo on serves. The point is, Karlovic's (and others') serve reputation is built on their matches against the Spadeas and Mellos of the ATP tour. Put Karlo on a court with Fed, and you'll see 'weird' stuff, like early, multiple service breaks ('WOW! His first of the tournament!') and guys who forget how to ace or get in a 1st serve 50% of the time. Fed only in the Top 10 on serve??

question was who has the best...not the more consistent

I think he meant consistently excellent. Fed's game isn't built around any one shot, which makes some folks think that he doesn't have the best anything. That's incorrect. Watch Fed play any of his colleagues who come in with Best This or Best That, and you'll see them missing and or spraying their famous shots all over creation. How is their shot then still the Best anything when they can't connect with it when the stakes are highest? Fed's forehand was superior to Gonzo's forehand on Sunday - the guy's really that good.

Federer can hit so many different forehands. The cross court dipper for passing, the running forehand, the down the line topspin passer on the run...u name it. not to mention the regular type forehands.
