NRG2 Mains and Poly Cross more beneficial for flat hitter?

I love feel of a full bed of NRG2 in my Babolat PSLtd. and it lasts pretty long since I am a pretty flat hitter.

I recently just tried poly in the mains and a multi in the crosses: Sonic Pro 17 and FXP Power 17 respectivly. I lost some ball pocketing and it felt like a board. So i'm starting to wonder if i'm even able to utilize the full potential of poly in the mains since i dont hit with much spin to begin with.

For all you flatter hitters out there with dense string patterns, what are your thoughts? Do you think it would be more beneficial to have a nice multi in the mains for feel and a poly in the cross to help with string movement and control?

I'll try nrg2 mains and maybe a cheaper synth gut like gosen micro and see how that goes.

I agree, that would probably be the better bet if you don't hit much topspin. That being said, when I tried out syn gut mains and poly crosses (back in the day that a string job would last a week for me...), my flat shots were pretty awesome. That being said, I'm a heavy spin player, so I couldn't hit my normal shots.

If you feel like you aren't getting as much control with the Nrg2/Gosen set-up, you should definitely give the poly crosses a try.

Man, string movement must have been horrible for you! Thanks for the response, i'll try out syn cross and then poly cross and compare the two.

I'm aiming for most ball pocketing. I am a pretty flat hitter but i'd like to have a little bit of help in the spin department so i'm hoping the multi in the mains will help in this department.

It was horrible, but I got through it, haha...

I have recently tried X-One Biphase ( mains ) with Prince Twisted poly ( crosses ). I am also a flat hitter. This was a much softer setup than Red Code poly in the mains with X1 in the crosses. But that's all that I can say about it. Overall, nothing special. X1 by itself provides better power and better feel. I will just have to wait and see if this is durable or not. Pure X1 Biphase 17 broke on me in 1 week. I have already passed 14 days with this hybrid.

Please let me know your findings. I also hybrid multi mains with poly crosses and was wondering if a syngut cross would be a little more comfy.

Jack,

So was the multi mains, poly cross hybrid more or less harsh than vis versa?

Yes. Multi mains and poly cross will play softer than the other way around. Whatever string is on the mains gives about 80% of the overall feel of the stringbed.

Your thread caught my eye because I am a relatively flat hitter and I use NRG and Poly hybrid. However I use poly in the mains and NRG in the crosses.
I have tried all different combination's and love poly/NRG as I get more control this way.
Prince Speedport Tours (98in head)
Mains: Luxilon BB Original or ALU Power 17g @ 54
Crosses: NRG 17g @ 57

I found the set up way too powerful with NRG in the mains so I switched it up and kept dropping down in tension until I found the best balance of power and control.

Everybody has different preferences but have you tried any set ups similar to above?

The feel is great with NRG (or X1) mains and poly crosses however the downside is durability. I've used the setup twice in a 16X20 pattern and it did not last long at all. Having said that, while it lasted it was one of the sweetest hitting setups I've ever used. Great feel and power from the multi mains and the poly crosses gave a nice bit of hook and spin to the ball.

I used cyberflash crosses which were quite nice and very affordable as well.

If you love the feel of full NRG2, why not use that? I feel like some folks feel obligated to use a hybrid and/or poly because it's talked about so much, but I'm not convinced it's an advantage for everyone.

Of course, a lot of us stringers like to restring a lot and fool around with different stuff, and that's a good reason right there.

I liked pro redcode mains with NRG2 crosses, and hyperion with NRG2 crosses. I bought 2 sets of NRG2 and 1 set of each pro redcode and hyperion. I am going to be testing the two strings to see which string I like better. I also bought Babolat VS natural gut (yes its expensive but I want to try it as my first natural gut) then I may go down to klip and compare Klip to NRG2 in the crosses. The one and only time I tried a poly in the crosses was with Gosen in the mains and cyberflash in the crosses. I didn't really like it. I did like the muted feel of cyberflash. I am going to try Babolat VS ntaural gut in the crosses with alu power in the mains. First time using such a combo but I heard its one of the best combos one can make. I am not sure yet if i'll give the Natural gut a try in the mains.

Getting back on topic, I really liked NRG2 in the crosses, however durability was an issue. I am probably going to go down to NRG2 16 and see if it makes a difference in the crosses compared to the NRG2 17's. Anyone have any idea?

Additionally I didn't really like x-1 biphase. It was a bit too lively for me :S

I agree. I have compared full poly with full multi and for me, I got a little more spin with the full poly. In the last few feet, the ball would drop down a little more abruptly with full poly than with the multi, but not as much as I would have thought. I love full multi, but I thought using a syngut on the crosses or a copoly in the cross would give me a little more control and spin.

Right now I am testing: NRG2/BAM and Maxim Touch/Black Code

I'm a pretty flat hitter also and after experiencing tennis elbow using poly I switched to a hybrid with VS 17 in the mains(62) and 17ga Gamma Livewire in the crosses(60) on a leaded up (395 grams) KPS 88. This combination lasted almost 4 months with great power and control until the crosses broke on one of the rackets. Since there was absolutely no fraying on the gut mains I left them in, aware of some tension loss, and restrung the crosses with 17ga NRG2. So far so good but I'm really amazed at the durability of the gut.

Agreed, people don't seem to realize how durable gut is (compared to a multi or syn gut), they only look at the price (I don't agree with the restringing only the crosses part, but it is your racquet).

As a flat hitter with an 18*20 prestige I've had two combos that I've loved.

Initially I really liked X-1 with PSGD crosses. The X-1 is crisper and stiffer (certainly initially) than the NRG. The PSGD is stiff for a syn gut, it stiffens up the stringbed well. I've also used this with Bab Xcel with good results. I like it to stiffen the feel of a softer multi and kill the power a little. This was 62m, 60c

The second setup was Cyberflash mains and Weisscannon Explosiv crosses. Just love it. This change coincided with me "getting my arm back" after surgery and hitting harder again, was just chewing up the X-1 so had to go poly main but disliked the "board" feeling. The Explosiv is very elastic and does a great soften and elasticity job on the cyberflash. This gave me poly main and good feel and elasticity. For me the key is low tension on the poly. I have this at 52m 58c at the moment.

Hope it helps

Cheers, Orig
