NTRP Rating?

Alright, so I have never been in a USTA league...But I am wanting to join in on tournaments where I can start competing...Now I need to get a NTRP rating but I am not sure whether I will be able to join a league because I am starting a new job. Do you HAVE to be a part of a league to get an official NTRP rating? I know I'm around a 3.5 (Rounding up mind you) from what my coaches have said, but I've never officially been rated.

Aight, I mean I AM a USTA member, just haven't gotten into a league yet...I tried to join one but got a reply from the coordinator saying I need a rating...it annoyed the crap out of me...like I'm trying to join you so I CAN get a rating!

When you join USTA it assigns you a rating based on questions - then you can appeal to self-rate from there. Was that not the case when you joined?

The USTA league system is based on ratings that group players together so that the matches will be more competitive.

USTA tournaments will probably be very expensive per match compared to USTA leagues, especially for singles. Check to see if USTA tournaments in your area have consolation rounds. $50 entry fee, lose 1 & 2 in first round, no consolation round.........

You should estimate your rating by asking USTA players that you know what rating you should have. If unsure between two levels when first rating yourself, rate yourself as the lower level. Don't knowingly rate yourself at a lower level than you should have, that's cheating and ruins the system.

I can't recall if you have to be joining a league team in order to self rate. When you are satisfied you have learned a reasonable rating, try self rating on the USTA website to see.

I recommend that you look into the informal leagues that provide you with a group of opponents and you schedule your own matches. I'm not sure if they were USTA or that the organization that runs the USTA stuff in our area, ran those leagues too. USTA also has a list of players in your area that are interested in playing. You can play some 3.5 and 3.0 players and see how you do.

The USTA website has annoyed me frequently because finding things is not easy. The links often seem be designed to hide what you are after, maybe using jargon, etc. Search does not seem to work well unless, of course, you know some special jargon. If you find anything interesting or important, bookmark it immediately.

I click on the self-rate link and it sends me to a page that tells me to join a league...I never got a questionnaire, I've LOOKED at the pdf version of it and found out I'd be a 3.5, but it won't let me actually take it

I went to a team tryout and got invited to play with this team. I then joined USTA and had no problems. This was 12-15 years ago, and never heard anyone have your problem.

Check with your local USTA office or a team captain about how you self rate.

lol, last thing you want is to be stuck in ntrp limbo... rated too high that no team will take you, or play you. then you'll never be able to play a match(Es) that will get you bumped down.

This. And quite honestly you can have a lot of fun winning at 3.0 - everyone likes a winner. This is why you get career 3.0s. I talked to some guys and they LOVE it when they got bumped down from 4.0 to 3.5. Why? Suddenly they feel they can win most matches.

Be careful - most people around here think that being registered on this forum is enough to give themselves a rating

Alright I got it done! I'm at a 3.5, fair in my opinion. Apparently it was a computer problem so I did the questionnaire on my phone. Thanks everyone for the help and maybe I'll play against you guys someday soon!

You can get a rating over the phone now? For stick tennis?

Whatever happened to the good ole fashioned winning games?

What happened is to join a league or a tournament you need a rating, so you self rate in the beginning to set a base rating. I would say try keeping up with what is going on in the world...things change.

No one should self rate. That's ridiculous! At my club you are assessed by a coach from a standardized set of drills and from observation of you playing matches then given a starting rank.

lol, same applies for bump from 5.0 to 4.5....
these days, especially because 5.0 league seems to be the catchall for everyone >4.5... i hear alot of comments from my 40yr+ buddies that have gotten bumped up to 5.0... they were easily top of the 4.5's (undefeated), but when they got to 5.0, they found themselves playing just-out-of-school tennis players (ie. folks that were playing 20hr/week), self rating as 5.0 (because 5.5 leagues don't exist)...
