I thought Hewitt's nickname was Rusty...

Goran was/is called "Zec" in Croatia...which means "rabbit" .don't ask me why :-)

Does the rabbit animal have a significance in the croatian history? maybe it signifies greatness?

Because he looked like one when he was little boy playing soccer and tennis in Split... And Zec is a really a nickname not "made up" like many other on the lists here. Also, Mario Ancic nickname is Chunchi.

The Aussies had always some pretty nicknames, Rocket, Muscles and so on. Nice was 'Nails' for Bob Carmichael, because he was a carpenter (or undertaker). And 'Snake' for Ross Case. The older were more lyric, like the 'Californian Comet' (McLaughlin) or 'Bounding Basque' for Borotra or 'Crocodile' for Lacoste, who made the most money with it.

Nice list!

2] Ahhh, the Barcelona Bumblebee. Funny, all of her sorority sisters still call her that. (kidding)

3] Baltic? Maybe Max Mirnyi or Vlad Voltchkov.
Seles is a Hungarian from Yugoslavia, so I bet you were thinking Balkan Basher. I had never heard it, but the double entendre is funny. Did the zany Bud Collins give Monica that moniker?

5] Patty Schyder is probably like, "ay what about me, she is Slovak". Well Patty is going to have to earn that one.

6] Perfect. But I wonder what Nabokov would think of this? Amy Fisher?

Max Mirni- The Beast
McEnroe- Super Brat (English press)
Muster- The animal, or Raging Bull (per an interview circa 1996 Tennis mag)
Rafter- Skunky (from his brothers, figure it out!)
Stefan Koubek- Stef, Coolie (probably from his dope dealer)
Becker- Boom Boom (from English press)
Jocob Hlasek- Kuba (not sure how he got that one)

Not currently, but a week ago we were buried in snow. It was snowing for 2 days non-stop..it was chaotic.

I thought he got his 'skunk' nickname because of the white patch he had on his hair on Wimby 2001 ;)

Fernando Lopez: F-Lo
Slobodan Zivojinovic: Bobo (he actually signed his autograph that way when i got it from him in 1988!)

Is this true?
You rang?
St. Pat has a white patch on his scalp about the size of a U.S. Half Dollar, I think. Therefore when his hair is long there is a white streak. Though he has said, can't recall now if it was from an injury or not.
BTW, nobody showers more than Our Pat.

Thanks for confirming.
I actually do remember an interview in the 90s in which Rafter copped to 'skunky' as a pet name from his youth. In the same interview, Pat even referred to himself a 'sack of crap'............a nice humble guy from a huge family with a great sense of humor.

Yours!05, you mentioned 'Our Pat', which reminds me of a couple of English nicknames, Our Ginny (Virginia Wade) and Our Tim (Henman). Our Pat wins.

Speaking of 'Ourses', the UK and the USA have got an Andy thing going on. Our Andy wears Rene Lacoste. Their Andy wears Fred Perry.

Someone already outlined some of the 4 Mousketaires:
Rene Lacoste = le crocodile
Jacques Brugnon = Toto
Jean Borotra = the bounding Basque
Mais oui...mais... what about Henri Cochet?

Taylor Dent = The Zalophus Californianus (so I hear from posters)

Roger Federer = genius of tennis (Aykhan) or Fedex

Pancho Gonzales was called 'Gorgo' for Gorgonzola cheese by journalists, when he lost at Wimbledon. The name stuck with him. I think, Cochet was called 'Magician from Lyon'. Art Larsen was called 'Tappy', because he tapped on all things, especially women.
