Observations on Nadal vs Berdych spoiler!

Mr Topspin

Semi-Pro
Tactics they say are the name of the game and never more true than in last nights 3rd round battle between Thomas and Rafa.

Berdych's strtegy was great from the start. He hit deep and flat and bossed Rafa around the court, waited for the short ball ball and hit into the space or behind Rafa and then came in for a high volley putaway. This was highy impressive from Thomas who is not known for his volleys but when your approach shots are as deep or wrong footing as his were the volleys are always going to be pretty routine but i still give him a lot of cerdit for executing this strategy so perfectly.

Rafa by contrast IMHO got his strategy completly wrong. I expected him to continue with the grass court tactics he employed on the lawns of Wimbkedon. In which he played just outside the baseline, Hit groundies flatter, served bigger and made attempts to get to the net. That tactic got him to the final albeit against some average opponents. However he still beat who was in front of him and thats all you can do. However, Rafa, chose to revert back to his clay court game of playing 3-5ft behind the baseline and playing an extremely defensive game i.e 80% as opposed to 60%. This meant he lost the 'real estate' battle and was never able to dictate play as he was too far behind the court, his groundies lacked depth, lacked penetratuion and sat up at a comfortable height for 6ft 5 Thomas to unload bombs all night long. Consequently Rafa was being rushed on his second serve, and pressured at the net by Thomas' net rushing game which caused Rafa to spill so many shots.

So IMHO the match was lost on the drawing board.

Any thoughts?

I didn't see the match but I did see the match with Lee and Massu. I thought he wasn't playing his best, his serve which is usually a high percentage wasnt good, he just seemed off. If he was playing well those two shouldn't have troubled him at all yet they gave him a fight.

Unlike Federer who can win matches even when he is off his game because of his supreme talent, Rafa needs to be in form, and even then guys who step in and hit flatter does better against him.

We'll see how he is at the US Open

Nadal is playing horrible right now. He better stop fooling around with his girlfriend or his game is going to get even worse.

hes rusty. he hasnt played a tourny since wimby. the other players are match tough he isnt right now. federer isnt playing his best either but his game is more suited for any surface so he gets away with it.

So now rust is a good excuse for losing?

That means every Federer fan could just say that Federer's having a "bad" day when he loses.

That is what all the Federer fans always say LOL:mrgreen:

Actually Roger was doing an interview where he said that usually after playing the W that he was wasted and had to take off 2-3 weeks, just laying around doing nothing, and that is his best and easiest to win on surface.

For Nadal I would guess that he had to work much much harder and use much more energy to stay in the games and to especially win.

Nadal looks tired, not so much into it, personally I did not even expect to see him until the USO, and thought that he should have skiped grass alltogether and concentrated on the hard court season.

As for Berdych, he was simply amazing, you could see that he felt on, had a great plan layed out, full of fire and concentration ect.

Berdych played one of his best games of the year, good for him he earned it and deserved that win.

But then he went out the next moring and lost to Richard:confused:
