Oehms Strings Playtest

@Christoforos Giatzakis - What about Oehms APR in particular do you like so much, and can you liken it to other more well-known strings? Curious to see if perhaps there's something I'm missing if a reel is only $60...
It's comfy, it has the spin capability of an aggressively shaped string and the predictability of a round string, it has good tension maintenance without big sudden drops in performance. It has that pasty feel on contact which I like very much. It pairs very well with almost all the round polys I've tried in the crosses (most of the time I cross it with ghostwire and lately a lot with gosen g-tour 3). It itself is wonderful as a cross to multi or gut (no sharp edges).
Compared to alu power: has more spin, it's more comfortable, it's more stable, same control.
Compared to to tourna silver seven tour: it's more predictable especially on bh slices, it's more comfy, has less power.
Is there any particular string you're thinking of? If I have tried it I'll try to give a comparison.

How long would you say it keeps it's playability?

I too use ghostwire often for my crosses
The most I have played it is 10 hours, at that time it was heavily notched and decided to restring. I mostly play it for 6-7 hours. Please have in mind that I don't break strings often and play closed pattern racquets. I don't know how hard you hit or with how much spin but I would say that it's very good for at least 5-6 hours of training (longer for matches). For me it doesn't matter that much because I string my own racquets and this is a cheap string.... it cannot be beat for the price.

I ordered the reel of matador and I am surprisingly pleased. I got worried for a bit because the edges are dull and felt like a round poly. Also, in the hands it feels a lot like ytex poly power. It's even the same exact freaking color!!! That string is so stiff tho I have to go down a few pounds from my regular poly. Luckily they played nothing a like. Matador is soft, has some nice pocketing and pop. I'd have to give it a lil more time but right now i feel like it may be one of my favorite strings and the price is amazing. Too bad it's discontinued. I also got a set of alu pearl rough but it has a soft plastic feel. It's going to be a minute before I try that out tho

@einca13 Oehms Alu Pearl Roughand Kirschbaum Max Power played very very close to the Luxilon Alu Power. There's a 1.25 gauge version, I'd take a set from that, it's quite cheap. Don't know about the shipping costs. Unfortunately, I didn't play these with the same racket and same tension, to be able to do a head-to-head comparison.
I don't know how the Alu Pearl Rough will play at a low tension.

L-Tec Premium strings are targeted towards low tensions and great durability. I've been told they're played at 19-21 kg most of the time.

Thanks for the response. I may try the APR if I can find a set, they only sell reels here in the US. i have heard of L-Tec, but it has been along time. Can’t find them anywhere here in the states, they may have left the US market.

I think so, yes. The LTec guy I have contacts with told me he worked "with" TW for 10 years. Then people left and came and at some point stopped working with TW and continued working for another known European Store (some old TW guys followed).

Sorry missed the l-tec part. Thought you meant they carried OEHMS. I knew TW carried L-tec but their strings were all copycats and a bit stiff to me. I mostly use round polys so I'm cool with buying a reel of pro-line evolution from TW over l-tec offerings

@Westerwick Or anyone else who deals with Oehms - Do you have Angelo's direct email address?

Thanks in advance.

According to Angelo at Oehms, the Black Pearl Rough and Alu Pearl Rough are identical profile and gauge--sounds like they may have been extracted through the same mold and equipment. He says the Alu Pearl Rough is just a little softer. I have no idea if there is any aluminum fibers in the Alu--maybe a flame test or burn a sample to look for aluminum oxide residue, just for fun from my old chemical engineering days. For the price, I am considering a reel of each and some play testing. I'm in the process of selling off my leftover reel of RPM Blast, which will easily pay for both.

@TennisJrDad wish I could help. Try their email, the communication platform and Facebook at the same time. They're not vey responsive though.
I had advised Mr Angelo to create an instagram account about a year ago, but they haven't created one.
Too pitty, for them - in my opinion - because they're invisible at Instagram platform and some of their strings are pretty good.

I have emailed them a few times with no response. I had ordered a reel of alu pearl rough for their buy 1 get 2 offer. Payment processed, but no notification of shipping and no responses to emails enquiring about shipping or other questions posed. Was hoping a direct email would work.

@TennisJrDad I see no other option than having to call them on the phone, then. Unfortunately. Again, I don't understand this situation with Oehms. In December 2021 when I first contacted them, they were very responsive. Then, went off the grid.
You have to give them a call. Also, try some calls through facebook's messenger app.

Thanks Konstantinos, I will try and call them tomorrow. I unfortunately do not have a FB account nor use that platform. Hopefully I can connect via phone.

@TennisJrDad you can message me your full name and order number to send them an email on your behalf, also. Sometimes emails can go to one's junk/spam/filtered mail instead of incoming/visible emails. Of course, that's not a proper excuse, but let's exclude that out. I'm definitely on their incoming mail list, as I've exchanged emails before.

I don't know if this is the email you've been using but what I have from my previous contacts with them info@oehms-tennis.de

konstantinos Thank you ... If I can not reach them via phone tomorrow, I will take you up on that.

Revisiting the Oehms Sonic Speed 1.19 after about a year. Last time, the stringjob was poor as was the overall experience with it. The Alu Pearl Rough, for my level of hitting, is super good price/performance ratio.

Revisiting the Oehms Sonic Speed Power Wedges 1.19 after 1.5 year. Different racket, bigger gauge. Same mute feel, but not that terrible experience I had back then (poor stringjob for sure). Yes, it felt underpowered on this no-powerful, but rather control oriented frame. Less spinny that the Dyreex Cube Flash 1.20 and Isospeed V18 1.12. Played with a beginner today, but got to hit several fast balls, flat forehands, top-spin forehands, backhand slices (meh), driving one-handed and 2-handed backhands. Moderate power delivery, pretty decent Control on the forehand side. Nothing really stood out, but at the same time, nothing really to let me down. More feedback once I get to hit against advanced hitting partners.

It has happened to me that some setups are just not suitable for medium intensity practices. This one was good today.

I use almost exclusively APR paired with gosen g-tour 3 or t1 ghostwire in the crosses (awesome set up everywhere i've tried it btw).
I've received some samples of new strings in the last 6 months or so but havent had the time to try.....
Last time I received a set of black pearl classic that i have wanted to try in the crosses for some time. Also some samples of sonic speed which is good but too shaped for my taste.
Other samples included a couple of sets of an unnamed string that feels and appears like a twisted shaped polyester of beige/light brown colour.

Sonic Speed and other "mute" - low powered strings could work very well on the Powerful Diadem Nova. This racket so far has played better with strings of this type. Now, it's got Luxilon 4G on and while it gives me great Control on several occasions, some of the magic is lost because of the easy Power of the Nova.

With Oehms it all comes down to how often one wants to restring. I know some people here MUCH more advanced than me that will restring only 4-5 times a year. I've found out it's more cost-effective to get a drop-weight stringing machine and get a reel of Alu Pearl Rough and restring once every 3-4 weeks. Nothing beats a fresh stringjob even if it's not professional.

Alu Pearl Rough will give me a good 5-7 hours while Alu Power will drop dead after a week.

Yesterday, Sonic Speed felt a bit too much underpowered especially on the backhand side, but there was not consistently high pace on incoming balls. Playing with an advanced hitting partner will show more. Beginners may not read this forum, but some setups did not work well at all when hitting with beginners, for example Topspin Cyber Flash with the Elevate felt rubbish and then felt great when pace picked up! So, Cyber Soft would be better for low pace and Cyber Flash not.

The Oehms Sonic Speed 1.19 has a mute feel a la Solinco Hyper G, Mayami Magic Twist (with less underspin), String Kong Banana Bite. Difficult to overhit. Felt underpowered in several situations I caught myself having to return a fast ball, but the Ki5 made it possible to find impossible short angles and lead to faults. In situations I had the upper hand, directional control was very good.

Still low power, allows me to hit withour fear of overhitting, can hit short angles from the mid-court with this Ki5 x Sonic Speed combo (mostly it's the racket). Still, same mute feel, but the stringbed is still predictable, no crazy launches.

Do ALU Pearl Rough and Black Pearl Rough play similar? I have heard they are the same mold/shape and ALU plays a little softer and lively versus BPR, but otherwise pretty close, Anyone who has experience with both could let me know, it would appreciated.

has anyone purchased their outlet (b-grade) leather grips? i have a black leather grip from them that i love, so i'm thinking of ponying up the money to get some of their packs of b-grade leather grips
I think they make or used to make leather base grips for Head. If I ever buy a leather grip, it's gonna be from Oehms.

Alu Pearl Rough is a "hidden gem". I don't have Black Pearl though...

Similar enough that I could go back and forth with them...but I would say that BPR is a bit more crisp

Will have to hit again with the Ki5 295 x Oehms Sonic Speed 1.19 because today it wasn't a very good practice session. My hitting partner was hitting all over the place... lol.
Seemed the stringbed is starting to go dead. Will see next time out.

If you are looking for inexpensive leather grips, the TW leather grips are definitely worth the 10 bucks

Without the dampener, the Ki5 295 x Sonic Speed stringbed has gotten quite jarring. The dampener reduced a lot of the jarring feel, not only the sound. Has the stringbed gone "dead" already? With the dampener on, it was still playble yesterday, but the "pop" of the first 2-3 hours seems to be gone.

Oehms Sonic Speed 1.19 x Pro Kennex Ki5 295

+ allows to hit big swings without fear of overshooting
+ good sense of being in control one the forehand side
+ good access to top-spin
+ the price (1+1 deal if it's still on) and string once every 2 weeks

- demands big swings, otherwise balls will fall short
- noticed drop in playability especially when hitting without a dampener, it felt jarring
- underpowered for sure, most of my shots landed between the service and baseline
- underpowered for one-handed backhands
