3.5 for life it seems

Every single player on every team I have played with was at least bumped once, but most multiple times, and most have stayed. I have never, now in 10+ years, even in good seasons, got bumped. It has become a running joke of being the "best 3.5 ever" on our teams and with people I play with in leauges. Jokes getting old.

What's cutoff for successful appeal? 3.55? 3.60? It seems like most of the people in my league who got bumped will be less than 3.6 still, so they can just appeal back to 3.5?

Are you going to appeal up to 4.0?

Strangest thing I saw was my friend who was beating 5.5s as a 5.0 self-rate. His team won the 5.0+ sectionals and he went 14-4 this year. He got bumped down to 4.5C
Must have had a good partner.

J
I believe I found the player, and a good part of that 14-4 was Mixed so doesn't count. And yes, he played with very strong partners against so-so opponents on average so that was a factor. I didn't have him bumped down to 4.5, but very close to doing so.

OK, something is not right. The national championship team from our section had no bumps either. I have an e-mail and notice on Tennislink that the new ratings are out but see no changes. Am I the only one with that notification?

My team? Or G's team? We had a 5.0S on our team this past 4.5+ season that would have been on the bench of some 4.0 teams. I don't even remember his name, but I think he played three for us and I would assume he got bumped down.
Actually he was on my fall team, just had three matches and lost all but they were close. He's 60 next year though. I was surprised EH got the appeal but CS got the bump, maybe because of the NTRP championship ?

They are definitely out. Send me a DM with what team and I'll take a look.

There was a lady I saw at 4.0 Nationals that definitely was NOT 4.0. I looked her up, and she was a top rated junior at one point.

Her team won 4.0 Nationals, and she lost only 2 matches on the year, winning both her singles matches in the finals, losing a total of 5 games. Yet somehow she did not get bumped. Go figure.

Players were actually complaining about her during the tournament.

I hope they address things like this. There are "big changes" coming according to our league coordinator. She is also awful so she may not have any actual information. I am curious what they have in the pipeline

In Mixed, sure. No strikes or DQs from Mixed.

And they don’t even rate many mixed league matches if they do not go to nationals. It’s almost like usta doesn’t care at all about mixed doubles. I guess I can see that at the pro level but at the rec level where people are just trying to get teams together I don’t understand the whole men and women must be separate bit.

So after 5 mixed matches utr has me at about a 4.5. Which is that magicalnumber that says I should be a high 3.0 a mid 3.5 or a low 4.0. I sort of wanted to captain a 3.0 team with a few friends as well as some tennis acquaintances but I’m wondering if I will get DQed. We won’t win nationals it would just be something I would mainly do to try to get some friends playing more tennis.

if that seems like it wouldn’t work and I play up on the 3.5 team as well as a mixed doubles team should I make sure I always have a .5 to spare on the mixed team in case I end up getting dqed from my play on the 3.5 team. I tend to think I would be much more likely to be dqed playing up on the 3.5 team than if I play on a 3.0 team.

so if I play up and get dqed will my matches from mixed play get tossed out?

You seem to be more concerned with the potential for winning matches in the future than you are with actually winning matches.

Does that apply to Singles and Combo seasons also? And if so, why doesn’t the USTA factor in those matches/leagues at all? Basically someone can avoid Spring league and self rate under their level and win all their Singles Combo and Mixed matches but never get moved up. Kind of crappy.

He wants a vanity rating more than anything in this world.

From watching your videos, I don't think you really need to be concerned about getting DQ from 3.0.

This depends on your section. As someone else pointed out, Southern doesn't reverse matches but the player is promoted and can no longer play at the lower level. Others reverse all matches played in any current seasons. Others reverse just the strikes.

Tennis record was brutal for my team. We were National runner ups and had only 4 bumps. Third lowest on TR was bumped but many of the top guys stayed down. Of course, we can only have 3 of them back to play on a team.

I've started doing all the analysis on my blog, but one early observation is that despite Southern doing very well at Nationals, their bump up rate was nothing extraordinary. In fact, the men as a whole had a historic bump down rate certainly not seen for Southern or perhaps any other section in the time I've been analyzing ratings. Here is the men's chart.

2021bumpsbysection-M.png

The other sections are all pretty normal, bump up rates around 8-10% and bump down rates around 4-6%.

But Southern had nearly 15% of men bumped down? And only 4% bumped up?

In 2019 we had the Great Southern Bump, and then the subsequent curious notification to some players that they should appeal down and a large number of those were granted, so it feels like this is a continued correction for what was perhaps an inappropriate bump up in 2019. But this still feels awfully extreme.

I know who you are talking about. She beat my doubles partner in 8.0 Nationals and 4.0 Nationals. My partner got bumped. @schmke did you run her numbers by any chance?

Team from my district that went to nationals and won a couple matches there with self rates and appeal downs had all of 2 bumped. 2. What in the actual F? I mean if you are a self rate and going to nationals and winning matches, safe to say you need to be bumped. Hell if you are computer rated and going to nationals and winning matches you should be bumped.

Schmke, this is truly bizarre. I'm sure you know without re-writing how southern was one of the main sections mentioned in the self-rate threads. I hope this graph is a compilation of hundreds of players. If only a few players in each section moved up and down, USTA really missed the self-raters in southern. I played some, which was a privilege, even beat some of them, but I could easily form a decent 5.0 team and top 4.5 team if given my pick of players from the 4.0 self rates in southern.

Something looks fishy.

Was a 2017 4.0C, rating expired, had to self-rate. Didn't play much Adult in the regular season, won a 4.5 match, then two low rated losses that are suspicious looking as the match ratings are aberrations from the first 4.5 match and the 4.0 matches she played at Nationals. And didn't play any matches after these first three until Nationals when she couldn't be DQ'd during the event.

I wonder where the 8% bumped up in New England were? I saw almost no changes in Eastern and Southern CT and I checked a pretty decent number of rosters since I play 3.5 and 4.0 in both regions. As for Southern, that's all fall-out from MEP getting whipped on Essential Tennis by Milwuakee-area 4.0s and 4.5s :-D

I will dig into it more in the next few days, stay tuned, but something looks odd as it stands.
