Official: Djokovic has broken Federer’s Weeks at #1 record

The ATP race starts on January 1. Everyone starts with zero points. Nole's 2019 AO points will not be inserted in the 2021 ATP race. The "Covid Ranking" is about to finish in March 2021. 2019 Wimbledon points will be dropped after 2021 Wimbledon.

Amazing achievement for Djokovic - remains to be seen if he can tie or pass Federer in Slam wins also. Since Nadal will likely win at RG next year in May, it is possible that the two of the most cherished records in tennis (Weeks at #1, Slam titles) both held by Federer currently will both be broken within three months of each other. It will be interesting to see what all the records look like at the end of their careers.

If Covid-19 prevents tennis from happening, does it mean Djokovic will be #1 for the remainder of his life?
That's a whole lotta weeks!

Well done, Novak (y)

If Djokovic gets to keep his points from AO 2020 through till the freezing was implemented not only it means that in 2020 we had a rolling 2 year ranking system, since all points from 2019 after the freeze were counted, but also that this practice goes from 2020 to 2021, and, get that, ONLY FOR PART OF THE SEASON, WHICH WAS ACTUALLY PLAYED.

That means:

1) the absolutely disastrous practice for a rolling 2 year ranking system continues for over an year. That additionally puts a hurdle in front of the raising younger players
2) Djokovic gets to keep point from tournaments despite of those points being already counted and the tournaments being played a second time (a sort of double counting)
3) in a year where not all tournaments are played that practice actually leads to more weight of these points even as is. Double counting them is putting even more pressure on the lower ranked players that have the ability to raise through the rankings

What was that about Djokovic "fighting for the small man on the tour" again?

Hopefully.....If Nole hangs onto 2,000 from AO are they inserted into race? Like surely Nole doesn’t get a 2,000 point start to the year regardless of what he does there? Hopefully someone can answer these questions....

Wimbledon - what happens there folks? I presume points gained in 2019 are dropped at start of 2021 tournament?
I would think everyone starts the year and race at 0 in 2021, they just don't lose points until March from 2020, and then all goes back to normal, including Wimbledon.

I’ve never thought Weeks at #1 was a particularly important measure, but Djokovic certainly has been eyeing this goal for a while.

Due to the new way the ranking system works with COVID (players get to keep points from 2020), Marca has confirmed that whatever happens, Djokovic is guaranteed to finish world number 1. This will happen on the week of 8th March.

Congratulations to Djokovic and his fans.

What if ATP changes the way ranking system works atm? That's why it isn't official yet.

Wuhan virus gives him free extra Week No 1 but steals a Wimbledon from him. The second is bigger than the first.

Haters please stop moaning.

In 2006 Nadal reached the final of Wimbledon with the loss of only two sets. En route to the final he beat former Wimbledon champ Agassi.

In 2007 Nadal reached the final of Wimbledon with the loss of 5 sets. The highest ranked player player he beat in a comlplete match (on the SF Djokovic retired at 1 set all and Nadal leading 4-1 in the third) was Berdych.

Which proves nothing...

Agassi's back was just about broken by then.

His draw in 07 was much tougher. Soderling red lining and Youzhny who at that point had a solid h2h with him along with Novak who was starting to make his presence felt on the tour before retiring the match.

Not to mention, in the final he played a lot better than he did the previous year.

I thought that Djokovic was for the little man and against policies that heavily favour the top?

Oh, well, then, apparently only when his interests are not in question. Otherwise it is quite OK.

Djokovic is the last player to like any covid measures, including ones done by ATP. And I think he'll want to break the record in a legit way, with real time points.
It's all a bunch of crap. Novak lost to Sonego, Nadal, Medvedev and Thiem all within like 5 weeks. And yet there are still idiots out there who thinks that he deserves to be called the number 1 player on tour. :-D This world is really messed up.
What an stupid post. When you look at the real points gained this year, Novak is no.1, without covid system. It's irrelevant that he had bad finish. If he doesn't retain his AO points, them you can talk.

If they make any changes, it's likely what would happen after March 2021.
They won't change something they've already decided, as it would be unfair on the players. Remote possibility, but basically 0%. But yeah, I guess that's why this isn't 'official' official, but imo it's enough to be TTW official.

It is a messed up world indeed when someone thinks a number 1 is determined by results in 5 weeks rather than in a year. Only idiots think he doesn't deserve to be called number 1, because under any points system, he is precisely that.

are we not counting the fact that 6/9 slams he won from 04-07 were against pretty mediocre opposition?

Incorrect. It's not true that everyone bar Nadal and Novak Djokovic is mediocre opposition, which is what your statement boils down to.

What is demonstrably true is that the above two, particularly the Serb, have benefitted from facing the weakest generation the men's game has known.

And I shall not be congratulating Novak Djokovic, much less his fans (not sure why people do that - the fans didn't achieve anything here). It's sad for the sport that such a man shall hold the record.

Ya can't ignore Covid. It's not so scandalous because he picked up Rome & Cincinnati but he got to keep Wimbledon & Madrid from 2019 and Nadal didn't play USO.

There is a realistic chance Nadal would have taken some weeks in a full season.

What will keep it controversial is if Novak finishes say under 40 weeks ahead. Because much of 2020 was not played or played under unusual circumstances.
40 weeks?
I don't get your reasoning. Novak still earned the most points in tourneys played in 2020, and his weeks at #1 were frozen. The record is a career one. Place the milestone (when it officially happens) where you will, but to move the goalposts again is hardly sound, fair reasoning.

Yep, Novak finished the 2020 ATP race with more than a 2000 points advantage. It wasn't even close at the end. ;)

Where did you find this? I was looking for it for a while now. I wish the ranking would be this one, it actually is a better ranking than the one we get now.
Thiem is a clear 2nd for the year, Federer is no way 5th
The whole ranking thing is BS, I mean, Djokovic skipped Paris on purpose to keep 1000 points for 2 years even though the tournament was held. It doesn't make any sense.

Here you can get the "whole picture". Top 10 looks fairly similar with the exception of Federer and Berrettini.

is there any link to APTtour.com or some other official channel managed by ATP?
Yeah

Look at the 'drop date' column, and any tournament played from Jan-March 2020 will drop off in 2022. This means Djokovic will get full points for ATP Cup and Aus Open, even though ATP Cup won't be played this year and he could theoretically lose R1 in AO.

I have seen the drop date, but I can't rule out an IT bug for example.
This is where I tried to find some announcement from ATP, but couldn't, unlike with the previous announcement that 2019 points won't drop off in 2020 by default.

I thought age is just a number

especially for:
- already GS champion
- already the youngest #2 in ATP ranking

are you hating Nadal?
I don't think Nadal on grass in 2006 is too hard given his lack of experience on the surface. 2007 I think Federer should get huge credit for, was an amazing win.

Djokovic, who was head of player council at the time, announced it in an interview. I doubt that the ATP website has a bug which happens to coincidentally reflect what the head of the player council announced. I think the official ATP rule change is buried somewhere in those long PDF documents I linked.

I haven‘t found an official announcement either but there are several news reports that reference that the point system remains frozen until March

and it's a pity that ATP can't be more transparent on this.

ok, now how does this fit into the weak era narrative?
and how the 2016 - 2020 is stronker than 2003 - 2007? if the biggest threat to 2 old dudes is another dude who is 6 years older?
wasn't it the time for some young guns to start taking GS and weeks at number 1 away from them? instead of a 38 years old semi-retired player?

Its funny how it turns out Djokovic didn't only benefit but has truly lost 22 weeks or whatever this year as no. 1 since he was still by a mile no. 1 this year.
And if things were tight and points available to gain , he would have fought in Paris masters for some more points to get that record tying year end no1

Great achievement. And he only needed a worldwide pandemic to accomplish it. Well done.
Yeah most Djokovic fans are a bit embarrassing here. He’s been gifted 4000 points from ATP for 2 slams regardless of result.

Certainly not as dominant as Sampras or Federer, who never needed handouts or a weak era to dominate.

If you go that route than one can easily say Philippousis, Gonzalez, Baghdatis, 35 yr old Agassi, post 04 Roddick “gifted” Fed like 8 slams.

Sjoderling redlining :-D . He was struggling against Grosjean in the pervious round and lost a set, despite of being 30 places above him in the rankings. Same Sjoderling, who ended the year with only 4 more matches with a record 2-2.

Same Youzhny, who retired in Halle due to injury, and struggled mightily vs Simon, narrowly beating him in a 5 setter?

What fun it is to read those posts!
