Heh, I've lovingly called friends and girlfriends an arsehole on a few occasions. It's nice to see tennis players relax and not make canned speeches all the time. :)

I love Stan now, please cut the PC ******** in tennis. Federer gets worshipped like a god and everyone gets treated like scrubs not good for the sport but good for Federer fanatics. It was never this bad when Connors, Borg, McEnroe and Agassi were playing.

Serious question: if you think watching full-flight Federer is boring, what do you think of watching Murray and Djoker? Genuinely curious.

That's because many of those you listed were polarizing figures: many fans loathed Connors, Mac and Agassi (especially young, showboating, tanking Andre). Borg was icy and cool, but not universally beloved.

There's no question Federer is the most popular and beloved tennis player that has ever lived and that upsets fans of other players. The people who hate Fed are almost exclusively fans of Djokovic and Nadal. It's hilarious that Nadal has owned Fed his entire career, yet most of his fans revile Fed for reasons only they can explain.

Actually federer fans hate nadal far more than nadal fans hate federerte

As for djokovic federer fans cant handle the fact djokovic held all four majors at once. Im not referring to federer fans on tjis site, most of the arguments here arebgood natured banter sometimes goes too far but im referring tonthe media people like simon briggs at daily telegraph and others who effectively blanked djokovics achievememt and only today said federer and wawrinka two biggezt draw cards in miami. No disrespect to stan, but obviously nadal a bigger draw than stan.there are other idiots in the media like that as well who clearly bias to dederer to the point of hating other atgs

I don't think Federer fans are really fans, they are more like a cult. They don't like anyone who makes their god look bad or challenge him. The media has a huge hard on for Federer no surprise there but they destory their own credibilty with their bias.

Simon Briggs is the most interesting tennis writer in the British broadsheets. If you only want to read a journalist who dislikes Federer, read Kevin Mitchell of the Guardian, who today compared Federer to a Hollywood movie star who is past it and has greasepaint running down his cheeks - a sort of Gloria Swanson of the tennis court, in Sunset Boulevard ('I'm ready for my closeup.')

I couldn't believe it made headlines, verbatim! Opened up a major tennis site, and splashed right across the masthead "Wawrinka: Federer is an a-hole" (but they spelled it out, lol)

I'm not sure how those two statements are related. Djokovics 4 Majors in a row, which reflect arguably the most dominant 1-year period for a player since Laver's CYGS and just as impressive as Laver's CYGS, imo. I think most normal Federer fans are fine with the fact that Djokovic, being an ATG, accomplished something Federer didn't. However, I don't think that it is crazy to say that Wawrinka has played better than Djokovic since the FO 2016 and maybe is a bigger "draw card" than Djokovic right now.

You'd be the lamest person at parties. Just sipping your wine in the corner cryin that people move too much and the music is too loud. Everyone took it as a (funny) joke even though it was live except you.

To all of you who are shocked: don't forget that english is not Stan's mother tongue. Actually he's a pretty bad english speaker... As a fellow Swiss, I thought his speech (and Rogi's) showed what good friends they are now.

Clearly it was a slip of the tongue and it's not going to start a new trend in RU speeches.

Borg > Federer in this respect!

    and you know it!

Borg was a rock star w/o any backlash unlike Connors, Mac, Nastase etc

Federer is not a rock star, he's not combustible enough (at least the part we see of him), and never has been. he's more of an immutable ambassador.

    get it straight!

Let's not pretend, it was thoughtless from Stan, no matter how much you fans love Federer and want him to be ruthless (in tennis term) and great buddy at the same time(btw it's not his fault , he didn't know what would Stan say in his RU speech)

The other thing here is that English is their second language so that's another layer in the context along with being among friends.

If you watch one of Roddick's post career interviews, he essentially calls Roger Federer an ******* (not using the same word) also for not letting him win a Wimbledon.

Ok. Point taken. The only thing I found weird and inappropriate in recent times was something about Murray's MIL asking him to take his pants down to examine him.

I barely noticed it, at first. Then I was like "Wait, ESPN didn't censor that?" and kind of chuckled. A bit uncool for the kids watching. I'm sure courtside spectators are privy to much worse than that, though.

Will be odd if players try to one-up each other in their speeches, ribbing each other with friendly "MF"s and the like, in good fun and good taste, of course!
