You need to use the "starting clamp, bridge trick" for the mains so you don't waste string.
yah, i agree, i have only been stringing for maybe 5 or so months, and when i realized what a problem is it I looked that up, but have mostly been using reels until recently so hadn't bothered to buy or make a starting clamp, gotta do it to save expensive string

I have not tried gut/poly yet, because of the cost/not wanting to get addicted. I know it would be pretty special/magical feeling, but one of the lamest things about the 97s/my stringing situation is that I need a whole bunch of string to complete the mains; it's almost an extra foot of string on both ends to reach the tensioning gripper for the final pull, so unless I resort to shenanigans and other tools I cannot usually get 2 mains string jobs out of 1 forty foot set. The exception to this seems to be Zyex Monogut, which stretches to a truly outlandish degree, enough for me to do two mains jobs no problem, though I have not yet done it. I have been impressed with the peak playability more than the long-haul playability of the setup, as it's getting a little wild around 6ish hours, but I am impressed with the ongoing comfort because I usually can't enjoy poly for more than a few hours, and the Element is soft enough to allow some elasticity even as it goes 'dead' and is still smooth enough for the monogut mains to ride the rails and return to center. I think I went for a pretty big tension differential, 60 lbs mains to 50 crosses, and also dropped weight slowly and multiple times on each main because zyex monogut stretches such an absurd amount. I do notice that there is less control now than for the first 5 or so hours, but it actually feels like the crosses have lost more tension/changed character more than the mains, so I think stringing the Element at 54 or so, maybe higher, would lead to more control in the 'long run' if one's goal were to get the longest possible decent playing setup. I am not sure stringing Lux strings (even their softest, even just in the crosses) too much higher will be acceptable for me due to comfort concerns, so I am willing to string them low and maybe cut them out around 6 to 8 hours. I think the real wildcard in this string setup will be whether Zyex eventually notches while continuing to get more powerful/wild, but it feels as though it has stabilized in a decent place but the Element has stabilized several pounds too loose. this seems to me to be a function of the 17 crosses not being enough to 'hold' the mains as they loosen. I actually have seen a marked increase in 'control' just from putting on a tight 'worm' dampener, in essence creating more drag, mimicking another cross string to some degree. I'm excited to try this string combo asap on my other 97s, but life has been insanoflex and is standing between me and my tennis this last week.

hope some of this makes sense/is relevant; everyone's experiences with racquets and strings are so subjective...

The pot in which these troubles boiled was kindled by the firewood of oppression and heated by flames that sucked the air from gasping peasants. Would the pot cool off? Would it merely simmer, or would it boil over, to stain the floor of history...forever!?!"

Funny you should write about this string; monogut. I was just thinking I should get a set to try out! Would you happen to have any left? I have lux element and would love to do an even trade.

For those of you who handle weighted their sticks, did you feel it added stability at contact? I have added around 6-8 grams to 12 o clock and it has helped add some solidity to the frame, but I am wondering if adding some to the handle would help as well. I also did around 10 grams to another frame and that felt a little sluggish.

Would love to hear how long gut/poly lasts in your guys frames as well. I have been using pro's pro concept 1.20 and it is actually starting to hurt my joints (wrist and shoulder). FYI I am an upper 4.5 player.

Thanks,

I added 10 g into the handle of my 97S, but since the stability was pretty good before, I couldn't notice any significant improvement there. Still very stable.

Gut/poly durability depends on the surface. On clay, sometimes wet conditions? 5 hours.
Indoors 30+.

And I finally ordered a second one of these.
During a match against a friend yesterday my string broke after 30 minutes and I had to switch to my old Pro Staff 90 (I don't buy two racquets, unless I'm 100 % sure...just too expensive for me).
The difference was astonishing.
I always thought I could play well with the 90, but it was tough, I played so much worse compared to the 97S, great racquet.

Try moving some of the lead from 12 to 3/9, the thinner the gauge the more I personally find the need for weight at the sides personally.

Also regarding pain: wrist may well be due to the poly not pairing well with the frame, but shoulder sounds more like a mechanical problem, likely relating to the weight of your frame and how it affects your shoulder on serve.

For the wrist a bit of weight inside the buttcap should help, but for the shoulder I'd be careful and consider using a lighter spec.

For me, 10g added under the buttcap made it more solid on ground strokes, producing heavier ball although just blocking a hard shot feels just about the same in terms of stability as it was already head-heavy stick(10g in the handle doesn't change the balance that much, if at all)

As for the gut/poly, my first experience ever was with Wilson's Champion's choice(56/52), I liked it very much, great feel, ample power and pretty good spin. Although I had 10 hours before restrung the crosses, the loss of tension at least on the crosses after 4-5 hours made me wish I had strung them higher around 58/54. The choice of the restrung crosses is Luxilon 4G Soft, which caused some loss of the feel as it supposedly is harder than ALU Power Rough(in Champion's Choice), thus I like the original setup better. BTW, after the total of 12 or so hours, mostly singles, the gut in the mains doesn't look it aged at all, so what's been said around this forum is true that Gut definitely is worth the initial cost compared to multi, and then some. However, I should mention that I play with eastern/occasionally less than semi-western forehand grip, thus do not put a lot of spin like modern forehand grip would do on every stroke, but only when I need to.

Thanks for the reply. I certainly can handle the weight; I think I may have had to much tension on the poly though. I think I am going to try it lower like 48 lbs and see how that goes.

Nice. I am going to try some blu tac first and if it feels nice I think ill just do the silicone. No going back but if it works it works. I just feel that especially on the 2hbh the head lacks mass to drive the ball with authority. Using a 1hbh I feel it works great. I guess thats why they made this thing for a guy using a 1hbh, :)

Wow, I'm impressed.
I just got my second PS97S and it came in at the exact same specs as my first one.
Both are way under spec (304 g 32.5 cm), but this made is so much easier to customize them to my preferred specs.

I've had one before which was also in that range.

Interesting, since I think SpinToWin mentioned something similar.

Yup, pretty much all of mine came under spec.

I took the weight off from the bumper and put weight at 3+9 instead. So much better! More solid, more maneuverability and less power so I have an easier time controlling my shot.

I have tried many many set ups and after all of that I think stock is the way I will be playing it. I currently have some lead wrapped just at the top of the grip and that's my fav so far. I have tried 12, 3 and 9 and blu tack in the handle and did not like any of that. Basically stock is good. I am liking syn gut in this frame as well. Just ordered a reel of pro's pro topspin. Just like prince topspin from what I hear. Buying it on a leap of faith.

Just a quick question,
I recently purchased my second 97S, both in grip size L2, but the grip on the new one runs approx one size larger compared to the old one. Same leather, same overgrip...

Anyone experienced something similar?

All of mine feel the same... Having said that, try rewrapping the leather grip more tightly, that helps sometimes.

Thank you, I'll try it. It "looks" like it's wrapped almost the same, but I'll try it.

During my match yesterday my string broke and my second one felt like a different racquet because of the described issue, really strange.

Yes, I have experienced awful Wilson lack of quality control where they can't even get grip sizes right.

I'm loving my setup, these strings and putting lead at 3+9 instead of the bumper has made me fall in love with this racquet again. Very solid and nice feel. The control and spin are fantastic, no constant fear of hitting long. I should add it still doesn't have near the same feel as the demo.
Renewed interest in the upcoming box beam.

Finally got to demo this racket stock and loved it. I liked is feel better than my Rf97. The way the ball comes off this racket gives me much more confidence to go for my shot. And like many have said feelwise it's more of a pro staff than the RF in my opinion. The ball comes off with depth and penetration. Not just a spinny little shot that sits up to be hit. I'd probably put 10 or 15 grams in the butt and this thing would be gold.

How is control? How is your forehand compared to the 90? Is it erratic? Where were you on the night of the 16th?
Control is good.

My forehand is better.

I was rocking the mistress.
I mean from an even balance to around 32cm which is good. Not all users want to tailweight
Well... I would have to weight up the hoop of the new one most likely... So it doesn't really make a difference... I'm more curious in regards to the mould change.

Wilson will launch a new model of the PS97s ?
Yep, I was told it ships this week. I cant post a review on the entire racquet itself until next week. Its 6pts head light and plays in my opinion quite different from the current 97S

Personally looking forward to a chance to find out how the new one plays once it's officially released and while waiting for it, can you elaborate more on how the new one differs from the current version?

New one is 6pts head light compared to 4pts head light on the current model. It's still not RF head light but plays with much more maneuverability than the current model. Acceleration from the baseline feels much easier especially with a one handed backhand. I'm able to whip the racquet a bit more. I'll probably add lead tape to the grip to get it closer to what I like in terms of balance but it's a big improvement over the current one.

Maybe it's the paint, but it looks to me like the throat and top of the hoop are more box-shaped while the PWS areas look more rounded like the previous 97S?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by more solid and crisp? Does it feel/play noticeably stiffer? One of the main things I loved about the current 97S was that it was very friendly to my arm/shoulder and I would have already described the current version as rock solid. Interested to hear your comments as a player that has a sensitive arm/shoulder and was really looking forward to upgrading to the new version with more HL balance.
