I hit with my Clash To
There are enough data points now indicating that the 98 isn’t a racquet I’m gonna fancy. The TW review was lukewarm, too.
I've got a 98 demo on order but I doubt very much I'll like it more than the 100 Tour. I get crazy top spin and much improved control with fully bed of poly (Tour Sniper, Grapplesnake). Also, after I leaded up the hoop and installed a leather grip the racquet is rock solid. Very happy with it. Just goes to show you that it's important to experiment on new racquets to align them with your preferred specs. My goal in switching from the RFA to the Clash Tour was to find a racquet that is less tiresome to swing and less stiff. The bonus for me is that it is very close to the RFA in control and stability.

Did Wilson change something in the production? My Clash from March has exact 295g and 31cm with lots of sillicone in the handle. All 5 (!) Clashs we measured now had 32cm without sillicone, which also means much higher swingweight. Durability issues?

Today I got to hit: 100Tour with NXT 55lbs, 100 Revolve 53lbs, 98 Lux Element 53, 100L Sensation 55lbs. My buddy gets to keep the demos another 6 days. Right now I like the 98 and 100L. 100L is everything the 100 and Tour are if you use lead. If I were going to get into an arm friendly racket that doesn't weigh as much as my 60 other rackets I would opt for the 100L for its versatility and the 98 as a straight out of the box gamer although it too is a bit lighter than most of my rackets. I would experiment with the 100L and use the 98 as is. But I am an "old" guy, swinging tennis sticks since the early 60s. At 249.00 each I can buy a lot of 1980's/1990's Princes for $500.00. However, I did have fun doing my weak Jack Sock forehand imitation with that Clash 98 strung with Lux Element. So much so if I live long enough I might be able to snag a Clash 98 off the used market for a reasonable price:)

I know this is kind of silly to think about, but why is the Wilson Clash not in the hands of one of Wilson's featured pros? Why aren't they hyping this up? Can they not convince anyone to be the face of a racquet that is meant to change the racquet game?

It's puzzling marketing to me.

Hi guys, i am thinking of testing the Wilson Clash 100 (tour).

Currently i have a yonex Ezone DR 98 (green/yellow).

What will be the biggest differences, from what i read i guessed:

-swingweight will be higher for the Clash
-power will be higher with the Clash
-stiffness about the same
-Control a little bit less with the clash
This about right??

And what is the main difference between the 100 and the 100 Tour. From what is see the Tour is heavier and thus a little bit more powerfull on groundstrokes?

Either clash 100 will be a big adjustment coming from a dr98. You’ll have quite a bit less control and a way higher launch angle.

The clash 98 might be worth a demo as it’s similar in control and launch angle but still a little more power and spin than the dr.

Doesn’t feel like a racket a pro would use in stock form.

After my 1st outing (no match) the 98 imo is an improvement over the 100 and 100 tour..
The 98 is more predictable..and has a more tradition launch angle..more control...
I agree. I'm trying out different string setups now.

No mods...rpm blast at 46..constant pull..
My attraction to the clash line is it's dwell time and ball pocketing..98 does it well
The 98 doesn't feel as harsh on mishits as the other two do..

How open is the string pattern? Let me know how long Rpm blast lasts for you. Are you using 16 or 17g?

Not open..Not tight..17 g..
Will do..But. I like when tension drops to around 42 over time..
I do too... Normally. I strung gut/poly on my clash 98 at 53/47, it measured about 51. After 8 playing hours over 3 weeks it's dropped to around 37. I'll give it one more go before cutting out, but I didn't like the response from the low tension with this frame as much as I did with the Prince Tour 98 I previously have been using. Usually when I string around 52/53 it settles into the low 40s and stays there until breakage. I'm not sure why it dropped so much this time.

If it was your first string-job, the grommets require bedding-in and so you'll experience a bigger tension drop than usual.

Ah, thanks. I wondered if that might be the case. If it wasn't gut in the mains ($$$) I would cut it out, but I'll give it one more chance.

I’ve been using the DR98 for 2-3 years now, and have demo’d the 100 and 100 Tour several times. Very different racquets, particularly in the control department. But I was intrigued enough to order a 100 Tour (at my club), and when it came in, I ended up letting someone else have it. Couldn’t commit. I’m still in the process of demo’ing the 98 version, which I think is my favorite Clash model. Don’t go by the specs alone. Try them out.

In addition to the grommets settling in, I think the frame’s softness is another factor. Old frames that have been through many many stringing cycles also tend to drop tension more rapidly.

Yes I agree. I always end up stringing with stiffer polys in my old frames, keeping the tension low. You'll end with a catapult action with control rather than a trampoline.
If you use lead tape in the hoop, you'll also see it crunch up more with flexi hoops and ultimately come off. So you might want to place under grommet. Having said that, I was expecting my hoop lead tape to come off when I was playing with the Clash but strangely, I didn't have any problems. Perhaps the velvety paint job made the lead tape stick better.

Wan Kee in Mong Kok had the Clash for a really good price! Weight gain is a very real thing when visiting HK. The entire place is all about 2 things: shopping and eating!

I will have to check into it..I never had any luck finding tennis stuff at good prices..
Only thing I score is table tennis stuff..
I even look for those famous things that can be found in some markets...I Just want to get a frame knowing that it isn't legit..
But can't find those either...

Be sure to check out Wan Kee in Mong Kok right by the Lady’s Market. Had your impressions of the Clash 98 come earlier while I was still in HK, 2 sticks would have been packed in my checked luggage. :)

hand over your 'holic card...a true holic would have loaded up 4 and sell 2 of those to offset the costs for the other 2 :p

Just saw the Wimbledon highlights of Zhang Shuai’s match against Wozniacki. Looks like Zhang Shuai is no longer using the Clash and has switched back to her prior racquet now.

Those of you who have come to the clash from a similarly spec'ed frame, I'm curious if there is a consensus about tension relative to your set-up on your previous racquet. That is to say, if you were stringing 50 on your last frame, do you find you like the same tension on the clash or have you adjusted up or down?

Particularly I'm interested in experiences with the 98. My early impression is I'll want to go a few pounds higher in the clash.

I used Hyper G 16L mains and Ashaway Monogut ZX Pro in the crosses. 52/53 lbs. Overall really good performance, power, and feel. However, I ordered the Volkl V-Square and will try it in one of my Clash 100's next week.
I used full bed of V Square 18 at 44lbs today in my Tour. I enjoyed it and did not feel it was overpowered. More spin than Yonex Poly Tour 120 and almost as comfortable. I’m new to poly strings as of buying the Clash, previously my arm could only tolerate multis in my PK rackets.

I have now demoed the 100 Tour and the 98.
100T is very plush felt amazing on my arm but I was over-hitting a lot of my shots, you really need to balloon the ball with spin which is not my game but felt great to do it.

98 did not have that nice plush feeling and quite low powered, again you need to really spin the ball high with a lot of margin to be effective with this frame. Without the plush feeling the 98 is just kinda meh, not sure what it is supposed to achieve especially when there are so many other solid sticks in this frame size on the market.

Looking forward to the 2019 Blade to see what it can do with the Flex tech.

I can see this racquet working well with people with a modern game "lots of spin"!!,, but for flat hitters "old school strokes", their is no way that 40-44lbs in a 100" racquet will work properly??!!??!!,, soo much power
ive tried this racquets with low and high tensions,, the few times ive tried it,,
for me, that racquet works well in the higher tensions with all poly!,, and being soo wide open, a thicker poly would work, imo
the 98" is a bit tighter, so 17g string imo would work
with this racquet, I would try your favorite tension, this will give you a better standard to judge the racquet itself
i like the fact that wilson did not write the suggested specs on these sticks,, it leaves that to the person stringing to try it at different ranges
ive gone into the low40s and into the mid50s
as long as you keep the mains/crosses close in tension, you should be ok, with racquet deformation,,
i feel this racquet would flex alot if you go crazy with the differences, more than 5lbs,, etc
imo, ime, most racquets and this one in perticular would work well staying within the 1-3lb difference..
on a 16/19 pattern, i prefer the 2lb range (example 54/52lbs, 55/53lbs,,,,).

I have tried both 100 tour and 98 a lot recently with same string set-up (4G 1.25 at 47 lbs) and I play better tennis and win more points with the 100 tour. It´s a more effective racket then the 98. I play with a lot of spin and slice though and if you are more into hitting flat, the 98 will be a better option.

I posted my initial comments on the Clash 98 in the other thread specifically about the 98. But they are basically the same: the Clash 98 is “the Clash for flat hitters.” Players who think the 100 versions have too high of a launch angle and not enough control might like the 98. It might mesh better with someone who has an eastern forehand or one-handed backhand. But it’s too thick and muted to be for someone who wants to play a finesse / control game; it is definitely more towards the power end. It is not as arm-friendly as the 100 versions because of the denser string setup and smaller, less-forgiving head, but I would still say its much more arm friendly than a Pure Strike for example. I think the target user group is kind of small.

My favorite shot with the 98 is the flat serve. Tons of pop and pretty good accuracy. Aside from that, not too much stood out. Someone compared it to the old Pro Staff 97S. I think there is some validity to that comparison, although this stick is much more head light.

Not sure why you quoted my post but your reply had nothing to do with my question :)

Not looking for general Clash tension advice, I'm asking specifically how guys who are coming to the clash 98 from an established frame/set-up may be adjusting (or not) that same set-up on the clash.

Example: I've been playing Prince Tour 98 for about 3 years with gut/poly at 52/47. I'm not a string breaker, this setup settled into about 40lbs where it would remain stable for the duration of the gut's life, and for me that's where I liked it.

With the Clash 98, my early impression is that I'll want it to be maybe 5lbs up relative to the Prince.

4.5 player btw.

yeah I guess i was abit unclear ?!
but i was agreeing with you!!, the clash 98 has lots of power and going higher in tension is my opinion as well!
