Officially confirmed: Alexander Zverev has diabetes

Carb loading much?

I'd be curious how a top tennis player would do on a lower carb and high fat diet.... very curious if the level would stay or even increase....:unsure:

How can such a fit person have diabetes? It should be cured with exercise and right foods

Type 1 is often hereditary. A former co-worker of mine had Type 1 from childhood and his father had it too. Don't know if either of Zverev's parents have it.

This explains a lot of his Bo5 failures compared to his Bo3 results. Hard to sustain intensity and physical performance for 4 hours compared to 2 hours.

That being said, I haven’t heard of diabetes preventing people from having a functional second serve…
He looks skinny...doesn't own too much fat..but it will still affect his stamina levels

Anyone who follows his news, as I do, knows he has diabetes. The phone incident accusations came from the rotten Rothenberg, who it turned out was fully aware that it was a sugar monitor.
Rothenburg and almost all the other extremist leftists who claim themselves to be reporters, must be avoided at all costs.

I think its important to have this revelation for so many reasons-

- Awareness that a debilitating disease need not necessarily stop someone from competing a highly competitive sport

- Educating people that rotten tennis commentary (like Rotten-burg’s) should never be trusted in full

- That the reason for his endurance issues in 5 set matches doesn’t stem from the idiotic monicker - ‘choker’

- Motivates children and young adults to keep themselves fit and healthy…

No one is asking you to be a fan but don’t dismiss the value of certain points either

Many with T1D do a low carb diet to keep a (more) stable blood glucose. While doing high intensity exercises however, you have to add a lot of fast carbs to prevent a low glucose.

It's really weird and surprising that Zverev neither uses a glucose monitor (like a digital watch on his arm) while playing nor a insulin pump (to adjust insulin while playing fro several hours).

I check my glucose every 5 minutes or more often when playing or coaching, just glancing at my Apple Watch BG watch face.

T1D since 11 y.o.

It’s well known that the extreme leftists constitute the political spectrum that shows a shameful ignorance about diabetes (both types 1 and 2).
I don’t know where I could find the most knowledgeable political party on diabetes.
However, I have been told that extreme leftists know something about cataracts and tropical diseases.

If he only marketed himself more as a human being, I’d like him better. But best to him and this new foundation he will be starting.

In a sport where victories are decided by smallest of margins, him reaching top 5 consistently is a great effort with his condition. I am starting to like him!

First, that horrendous ankle injury in Roland Garros. Now, this diabetes revelation. The ABZ cult is being deftly challenged to show some compassion.

That probably explains why he struggles more in best of 5 matches. That’s a real shame as it’s a big factor that’s holding him back. Everything has to be right with persons condition to reach the very top. He’s still having a great career despite this which is very impressive. I wish him the best with his health and tennis.

Federer played for 3 years with mono, Rafa was healthy in 6 out of 1400 matches plus still has not figured out the thong sizing, Novak played 1/2 the career getting poisoned with bad carbs and they managed a few trophies…

Yeah, I heard he was diabetic a long time ago and was like, oh, we have a connection now. But yeah, wouldn't wish it on anybody.

What endurance issues? He has an excellent record in 5-setters. His issue are his extreme level swings under pressure, particularly forehand and serve.

Whatever one makes of him as a person and a choker and a failed talent, he is clearly more talented than any other player born in the 1990s. He’s the only one who has the core game that could have developed into that of an all-time great. Raonic, Medvedev, and Tsitsipas are miles off. (Nishikori - born a few days before the end of 1989 - is, too.) Dimitrov and Thiem closer but not quite there.
Medvedev just won the USO over a guy with 20 slams at the time. Zverev had 0 slams.

Hey, diabetics can be world-class athletes. He's not the first and won't be the last. But they can also be chokers.

Jokes aside, I wonder if unburdening himself with this "admission" could in some way actually help him overcome the mental block that has cost him so many big matches.

Not sure how his BO3 second serve stats fair compared to BO5. But, logic would dictate that once the legs are gone so is the bite on the serve.

Love the guy and his fighting spirit but cannot stand to watch his antics more than 3 service games. Disgusting and sooo annoying to watch…
I'm think that Nadal himself doesn't like his antics and if he could magically get rid of them with a snap of his fingers then he would. But it is form of ocd and it's not that easy. Still I prefer that kind of "flaw" over anger management issues for example. Or being a moron on the tennis court.

But back @topic. I feel sorry for Zverev. That pretty much puts an end to silly conversations of him being "genetic freak". But on the other hand I weirdly feel more optimistic about his return to the top after recent injury. Twisted ankle joint can be a real ***** and getting back to moving on the court quickly, freely and confidently may take a long time (especially psychologically). But after learning that he became world nr2 having type 1 diabetes kind of puts into perspective that he may not be that mentally fragile as some people thought he was.

I was referring towards them accusing others falsely and creating fake stories or theories to generate a conflict or controversy; but yeah sarcasm is fine too

Translation from German (thanks to Google translate):

I suspected he had diabetes. It is a sad and big complication for the practice of professional sports. Zverev is lucky to have made it this high despite this handicap.
It actually explains a lot of things especially his instable temperament. Him losing cool and going berserk in middle of matches sometimes can be due to the fluctuating sugar levels in his blood.

I have a couple of diabetic family members and have seen first-hand how hard a disease it is to live with even for non-sporting persons. Respect to him for doing so well despite having diabetes.

Ok he has diabetes. He also had rich parents who paid for tennis education and he grew to be 6'6. So not sure why we should feel sorry, his life circumstances have clearly been very fortunate, all things considered.

I've always thought diabetes was a disease almost exclusively for overweight people. I wonder if Zverev used to be fat as a kid.

That is true, I also have friends who have type 1 diabetes, and they do suffer from extreme mood swings and get angry very easily when the sugar level drops .

His losing record in 5 sets is probably stemming from his inability to trust his body to keep pushing himself longer than that might be required in long matches.

The GOP is expected to try to kill a provision in the Democrats big climate related bill which would limit insulin prices to $35/month.

”More than 37 million Americans live with either type one (produce no insulin at all) or type two diabetes and a quarter of them rely on insulin to stay alive...a vial of insulin made by Eli Lilly cost just $21 in 1999, but by 2019 prices had shot up by 1,000 per cent to $332 a vial), it’s now become the most expensive chronic disease to treat in the country…The American average list price for a vial of insulin was $98.70. The closest any other country came to that was Chile where the same amount of the lifesaving drug, on average, costs $21.48.

Emphasis added.

I have two nephews with type 1, it's a very difficult disease to manage and yes can cause pretty dramatic mood (and energy) swings. Pretty incredible he's at such an elite level.

He does not struggle in 5-set matches as he is in the top 10 of active players for 5-set record and #65 in history - he is #1 amongst young players. Roger Federer is #98 incidentally on this list well behind him.

Zverev’s problem is that he plays too many 5-set matches especially against low-ranked players in the first week of Slams so that he is somewhat running on fumes in the late rounds when the stakes are high. I think it is a mental issue - just like his choke in the USO final.

Diabetes type 1 can be caused by genetic factor or environmental factor.

If you have type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. Your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at any age. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to stay alive.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when your immune system, the body's system for fighting infection, attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Scientists think type 1 diabetes is caused by genes and environmental factors, such as viruses, that might trigger the disease.
