I prefer the Xuron brand cutters with the retainer(keeps small pieces of string from flying all over the place) and have a selection of straight and curved awls, but I'm a tool junky. I also use needle nosed pliers, parallel jaw pliers and starting clamps. I have a stringmeter and a calibration tool also. I think a starting clamp is very useful. It can be used as an extra clamp, to pull knots snug, for prestretching string, etc.
