Oh my god guys you won't believe this....

I just got a call from a tennis store shop. I contacted them back at the beginning of when i decided to purchase a machine, and they told me they don't have any.

I can swear to you, I was going to place the order for the Neos 1000 today, and make a post saying, I finally ordered it to make you all happy. However, the tennis store just called me saying they have a used babolat machine. Around 9 years old, and he wasn't sure of which version. He told me it's either the star 3 or the star 4. He told me it was yellowish in colour.

He also told me it just went through repairs and a lot of the things are completely new. The person they contacted said he paid $500 to make a lot of things new. The asking price is $1000 local with no tax. With it come the swivel clamps, with an additional swivel clamp, and badminton clamps.

What do you guys think? Should i just spend $100 for the Neos 1000 that I was going to place an order on today?

David123

I am just scared that the electric tension head is really old? therefore will not function properly and be useless?

David123

I am not sure if I just want to spend $100 more and get the new Neos 1000. I'd love to have the star 3 or 4, but its 9 years old. What if the electric tension busts?

Then you send it in to tennis machines or babolat, they are still extensively used by tour stringers and they string a lot more rackets than you

If the electric tensioner breaks how much would it approx cost to fix?

I say take a shot. I don't think opportunities like this come about often.

If you are in doubt. Call JC at stringingmachines.net. He's usually very willing to answer questions, and he may be able to give you a ballpark estimate on what any potential repairs would cost.

What do you guys think?

Hoenstly, I think you should just have someone else string your racquets.

If something breaks on a star 3 or 4 like the main board, it will run you a few 100 dollars, plus shipping. That is, if they have the parts to fix it ( the star 3 parts will no longer be available after they run out of whatever they have in stock).

Tell them to send you photos of the machine so you could see the condition.

^^ LOL. I am really excited by this offer but I don't know how well it's going to function after 9 years of usage. I may considering it though. I'll ask him to send me pictures.

Wouldn't it be sort of weird like 2 ppl calling the place? I think they have only told me about it. So what do i say to not make it as weird?

They probably want the guys number so they can call and buy the thing :)

If it aint completely trashed buy it. Unless you have absolutly no chance to afford to fix it if something were to happen.

David123

But simply looking at it isn't going to tell me if it's good or not. Yes it will be if it's rusty or not rusty, but more sophsticated things such as the clamps, and the electrical mechanism can't be just observed.

David123

Update: It's a star 3. He's been taking really good care of it over the the years. I asked him about the Electrical mechanism. He told me not to worry about it as those last a very very long time, and he's been taking good care of it over the years. He told me it was a workhorse. He's an extremely nice guy, and very easy to work with.

just kidding (; if I were you I would buy the Neos

haha. so you're a believer in the Neos? lol...I think i am going to purchase the Neos. I've just read so many threads that people keep having to replace things over and over again. I don't want to spend so much money fixing the babolat star 3. It's a great machine, but it gives me the impression that it needs to be maintained and fixed every couple of years which can really dig into my wallet. Although the machine does sound nice, it's 9 years old and i believe no matter what sophisticated machine you have, (including babolat) that it's going to break down after being in service for so long.

The person i am buying it from is a pro shop owner. I am sure he has strung thousands of rackets on it. There's bound to be problems. I am still waiting to give Drak the email so he can ask the guy questions. As i think phone would cost Drak long distance, which I wouldn't want him paying, and it'd be not as weird.

Going with the Prince Neos 1000, you won't encounter any of the problems you may encounter on the Babolat star 3. No upgrades no nothing. You're safe. It's simple and easy to use. I may upgrade to the Wise tension head if i get a lot of business but that i am pretty sure is bound to last around 5 years hopefully since I won't string as much as a pro shop.

I think there's just too many things that can go wrong with the babolat. Although I believe i would love to string with it more than the prince neos, I think i have got o look at the durability of the machine, and which one would provide consistent results for a longer time period. The babolat being so old, I am not sure it would, and if it does, it'll cost additional money in the hundreds to replace things as years go by.

All being said, I'll give Drak the email to contact the pro-shop seller. If drak highly recommends the machine, then i'll give it a second thought, and go look at it myself. However if he disapproves of it I'll just go head and buy the Neos 1000. You guys are tired of all this posting and I am too. I am just sacrificing a bit of time and annoyance for a more enjoyable machine for me to use.

I'd like to sincerely apologize for bombarding this forum with many questions, and yes I shouldv'e just stuck to a machine I thought was right for me based on my own judgment. You're going to get many mixed opinions. For every person that says one machine, you're going to a person praising the other machine and so on. Inevitably, at the end of the day it's only my choice based on how people commented on the material.

I'd like to apologize again, and it's your guys' call whether you accept my apology or not. Thanks for everyone's input, and it has come down to my judgment based on Drak's judgment which will hopefully serve me well for many stringing years to come.

Regards,

David

I don't mean to rain on the parade but is $1000 that good of a deal for a Star 3? I ask because I seem to remember seeing them offered in the TW forums, on stringforums, and on **** quite a few times before for about that amount (case in point here). The gorilla under the bed in these deals appears to be the condition of the machine and the ability to get parts for it should repairs need to be made to it. Packing and shipping the thing would also be a factor given that French tank manufacturers could probably learn a thing or two from Babolat. This wouldn't be a factor for David though I suppose since his deal appears to be local.

For the record, I am not questioning the quality of the machine but rather the value of the deal.

Yeah i saw deals for $1000 too, which is why i am not jumping at this deal. The guy's machine is only 5 years old yet he's still only asking for $850 maybe it's because the machine just got refurbished with $500 but still..

Say, since the star 3 is at your home town, why not bring a racquet there and string one up.Then you will know what its like to string on a good machine. The machine is meant to last a great period of time. Ask him how many raquets he has strung on it.
Even if you bought it, and the electronics went say after 5 years, you would have easily recouped your investment and some, and had the pleasure to string with a great machine. There are also electronic speciality shops that repairs circuit boards etc. even if the manuf. stops making parts, but who knows the machine is a commercial machine, and will probably service you a long time with the use that you will put it through as a home stringer.
My opinion is go with the STAR 3 !!! Its proven a great machine, and over time you will be glad you made that decision, also its local for you, so no shipping! Get it!!

Its one of the best machines ever produced, the star 3 has a great track record, it located locally to you, which may not happen again for some time, I would risk the age of it, as it has such a great record, and yu will have one of the best machines to use. Get the star 3! Its the best piece of advice I can give you.
Also ask him if you buy it maybe he would throw in some strings, or try and lower the price. Offer him $900, and show him 9 $100 bills in front of him,(leave the bills in his sight while talking to him, good chance he will take it)
and I bet he will take it, worth a try, and if not then give him the $1000, as its probably worth it.
The better the machine is the more enjoyable the task is .Bottom line is to enjoy the job, is it not? You will with the star! Get it!
With all the looking you have done you should realise that this is a great opportunity to get a good quality machine at a decent price!(you certainly know that this machine is bettter than any other machine that you inquired about in the past, should be a no brainer of a decision for you!

Hi David,

It seems you are having some difficulties on deciding which machine to purchase.
You've been asking tons of question on the Eagnas machine earlier, and you stated that you have doubt about the quality of the machine, CS, asking for pics, feedback from users, shipping, prices, blah blah blah, and blah blah blah.

Then you setup some polls between machines, some other brand names, some other models, also some for feedbacks, some more doubts, some more questions, also some more blah blah blah, and blah blah blah.

Then you stated that you have make up your mind on some machine, that was... couple weeks ago... We all thought, "Congrat David, you gonna start to have some fun and a machine that you like."

Then now you said you are having trouble on making decision again because someone is making an offer to you on an used machine.

Then you setup this thread, (yes, I mean another thread) to ask the same questions you've been asking for months again, and again... and blah blah blah.

Please don't get me wrong, I am not trying to yell at you, I want to give you an advice:

From what I understand, you have so much worry about buying the machine, I know it's costly, it's a big investment.

If you have so much worries, such as price, quality, durability, user-friendly, customer service, shipping & handling to Canada, brand name, models VS models, feedbacks.... etc etc...

Why don't you just keep the $1000 in your pocket, and let some pros to string the racquet for you? It only cost you about $12 - $15, and you know for sure the pro is using the state of the art machine, tension the string to the exact specification you require.

$1000 equals between 66 to 83 string jobs, depends on how much the pro charge you.

And you don't need to worry anything anymore.

Just my $0.02

I don't know Jim. Although that post is encouraging. I am looking for a durable machine, and I don't think it'll be the case with the Star 3. Nah, I know that a string machine will save me money and is way more convenient, as i can string rackets whenever i want and experiment, as well as make some cash. My decision is firm between the star 3 and the neos 1000. If the star 3 doesn't look good and I can't get that assurance, then I will go for the Neos 1000. However if the star 3 looks to be in good condition, and if drak is impressed by the machine (Drak has offered to email the seller and ask several questions as he is knowledgeable with babolat machines) then i'll go grab the Star tomorrow.

THAT RIGHT DAVID YOU DO NOT KNOW I really don't know wha you are thinking!
Why not at least go over and look at it. Better in person than pictures! What are yu thinking about pictures as you are there its local to you! People buy by pictures when they cant be there to see it, as thats what I did! You can go there and see it and try it out! What an opportunity, don't blow it!
Go and at least look at it for crying out loud! Bring a racquet and a set of sting and string up one racquet, as it should not take you long, as your drop weight you are using now you commented takes you 35 min, you shold knock this one out in about 20 min. and see 1st hand how it works, rather than pictures! What are you thinking?? you have a great opportunity to get a great machine that others here can wish for.You should at least go there and look at it and try it out, or you lost total control of your mind!!

Just go back and reread Tim's post to you on the gss site, he told you he bought his strar 3, 10 years ago, and it was 10 years old then, and his still works nice. He probably strings more racquets in one year than you will string in a good # of years. Think about that! Just what are you thinking?? Or is it lack of thinking? Get the star 3!!

BTW, later with the neos, you upgrade with the wise you would have way more into that neos than the star. This should be a no brainer, just think about this post! This machine is not even in the same ballpark compared to all the othermachines that you considered, this is a high end commercial machine.
If I was in your shoes, I would already have that star in my house by now. Don't blow it!

Go there and string one up, then you will know! TRY IT OUT ! YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO TRY IT!!ITS not that far to go! Its local! No Shipping!!!You know there is no perfect sennerio, but this is a chance to get a good machine, and yu only want pictures, you are just not thinking!!
You have been wanting a machine for a while now, this is a great opportunity to get a very high end commercial machine at a decent price, and you want pictures. I really don't follow your reasoning at all! The timing of this machine is perfect for you and you just want pictures that tell you nothing!
The machine is probably stable. You on the other hand may not be stable.
I cannot understand your reasoning. This is a chance to get a much betteer machine than anything else you were considering. You lost it David!!!

Another thought,
with the neos, + wise = $1600.00
You can get this STAR for $1000.00 possibly less if you can bargain, so even if you send the tension head electronics to Babolat and spend $500, (which in all honesty would not even be needeed), to get the electronics rebuilt it is still less than the neos + wise. Too many reasons not to go look at it. Evidently you do not seriously think things out!
Here you post and say "you will not believe this.........." and you don't even want to go look at it. Makes your posts worthless!!! Why are you doing this?? If you were not even going to look at it, then why even post to us about it???
Good luck to you. You need it!

Jim, you're getting it all wrong :S I was originally gonna go try the machine, but first I wanted to see pics. If it's rusty and everything, and doesn't look at all to be in good condition, then what's the point of driving there. If it seems to be in ok condition in the pics then I'll for sure go up and give this bad boy a try. If the machine seems to be in really good condition, and I like stringing on it and don't notice any problems, then I will for sure go ahead and purchase it. But if i see the eletronic tension head is lagging or has problems in pulling tension or the clamps don't function properly as i am test stringing it, then i'll just get the Neos. That's what i meant before. I'll for sure give this machine a test stringing try. After all, why would i even consider it then.
