The Big 10 is not bad, but it is probably weaker at the bottom than the other major conferences at this time. That means there are more easy matches where you can mess with your lineup without being in danger of losing.

Agree, MSU and Nebraska are sure wins, similar to BC in the ACC. Indiana, Iowa, PSU, and Northwestern are sometimes competitive, but probably not as tough as say Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. PSU and Northwestern though were up there the year before, so it goes back and forth

petros is a stronger player than gojo. you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know this. gojo's results are helped by the fact that any ball that hits the line against him is called out.

Please. UNC fans have flocked to twitter because Gojo made two bad calls in two matches against Blumberg. They fail to note that Blumberg won both sets in which the bad calls occurred. They also fail to note that in the third set yesterday, Gojo was up on Blumberg 5-2 and Gojo called a ball out on the baseline that was clearly out. The ref incorrectly overruled Gojo giving Blumberg the point and a point penalty for the game. Gojo didn't whine about it or cry on social media, he simply kept playing and won the match. UNC whining about cheating is rich considering their athletic department cheated for years by creating fake classes to keep athletes eligible.

Sorry, but trying to frame the blatant cheating incidents as inconsequential to the outcome of the match is either disingenuous or naïve. The cumulative effect of that much hooking can easily weigh heavy on the recipient, not to mention apprehension it may cause when having to hit shots close to the line or performing well during high pressure situations. What's more shocking is you're trying to deflect what was obviously a terrible call. Come on man......

Athletic departments cannot create fake classes. Academic departments do that and the department concerned fired people for it.

I think the call was incorrect. I've watched many college matches over the past week in Winston-Salem, with players from colleges all over the country, and incorrect calls occur. It's hard to call lines - players, umpires, and line judges all get them wrong. But to claim it's "blatant cheating," rather than an incorrect call, is a bit much in my opinion. There is a chair umpire sitting there that can overrule it - and as I pointed out in my post, the umpires often do overrule it (in both the correct and incorrect direction).

I do agree with your point that repetitive hooking can alter the way one plays a match. I watched Gojo and Blumberg play three times this year, and there were some questionable calls in both directions, but it wasn't excessive by either player, and as best I can tell, it didn't seem to alter how the matches were played or the outcomes.

The academic department created the fake classes and then the athletic department directed the athletes to those classes, over decades, so they would remain academically eligible.

If the ball was on the line I would not have even given the situation merit, let alone comment. Having played tennis tens of thousands of times, watched as many matches and made the same call countless times, I'll argue to the end it was not a hard call to make right. The ball was inside the line, not even close. "Blatant cheating" is an understatement.

this is a clown response. nobody is saying that blumberg lost the match due to the calls. that's not the point. the point is that gojo has made sketchy calls and deserves to be called out for it. stevie wonder could have seen the ball was in from yesterday. the ball was inside the line and gojo knew he had the umpire blocked and it was a deuce point. he cheated on that call regardless of whether or not he won the set. bush league.

gojo probably didn't argue the call against him in the 3rd set b/c he knew it was karma from earlier in the match.

Since this discussion is taking place on the Ohio State thread, here's a video of Torpegaard with an incorrect call against Petros yesterday. It was a slow moving ball that seems like it should be easy to call and was clearly in on replay.

When you’re in a hole stop digging. I suggest you go debate Steve Johnson, Riley Opelka’s dad, David Roditi or any of the many folks that find the call a bad joke. https://twitter.com/sjohnson_89/status/1000680259539361793?s=21

Torpegaard with a bad call also that should have been obvious to him, agreed

Lots of big tennis names jumping in on the Gojo call - Gilbert, Cahill, PMac, Stevie J, etc - hopefully this leads to some traction to try to get some of the egregious cheating out of college tennis - it really is an embarrassment, and yes is much more widespread than Gojo (his call is one of the worst I’ve seen, thus the amplified outcry, but he has plenty of company)

No comment on the call by Torp, huh? Figures.

You’re deflecting in a twisted attempt to make yourself feel better. The Torp call was awful. Difference is it was overturned. This is the 2nd time I’m a month your boy was caught on tape.

BTW. You’ve never acknowledged Gojo’s bad call. Just deflected for him.

Torp's call was not overturned. Gojo's call was incorrect - I acknowledged that early on. Don't make things up.

Granted you acknowledged the call was incorrect in passing, then went on to write a novel to justify your boys cheating. I’m sure Gojo appreciates your blind loyalty.

Go debate Steve Johnson or Brad Gilbert on Twitter. Let us know how that goes for you.

A novel? You must read some very short books.

another bad call. however this call was made at 30 all as opposed to deuce. the umpire was shielded in the gojo match so he couldn't overturn the call and gojo knew that. no excuse for the umpire not to overturn the call in the torp match.

Love it, this has turned to a line calling debate; thats a rabbit hole we'll never get out of. So typical for a TW thread.

does this ohio state doubles duo have any chance against UCLA's best ? can either of these teams good enough to beat the team of Ram/Mello ?

I know. Comical with one person defending cheating. Lol [emoji23]

There is no cheating, there is an umpire on the court, the only people who think that is cheating are people who haven't played tennis at a high level. Every good player makes a close call even a bad call now and then, it happens. Only in tennis are kids required to make their own calls. Imagine if this happened in basketball, football or soccer. When was the last time you saw a soccer player fall down roll on the ground get up and say, wait, I faked that dive don't give me the ball there was no foul. What a joke all these losers calling someone for a bad line call.
I've seen some Memphis player make some horrible calls.....there just wansn't any video available nor did anyone care since they play for nothing and they play matches that are not important (sorry, thats the truth)......get over your honorable self

You're response is a joke and everyone knows it. The video is beyond clear, and this is not this players first time being caught on tape. There's been many higher level players and coaches like Steve Johnson, Brad Gilbert, Patrick McEnroe, Dave Roditi that weighed in on the call.

You're just a sore loser because Memphis beat your Florida doubles team, the same Florida doubles team that beat Ole Miss the round before in the NCAA championships. In the same tournament and other non important matches Memphis also beat Wake and USC teams. HAHA

Wondering what you Gurus think about official calling Foot Fault on Mikael Torpegard at 5-5 in 1st set tiebreaker yest on his 2nd serve.
It handed the set to UCLA who served it out.
Well, that is why you have to be even more super careful when linesman are in work and watching you. We all know this when playoff are going on in USTA and umpires are roaming around and watching you. So when you know Linesman is watching you, you have to be even more careful with footfaults

pretty wild, anyone remember this from the challenger circuit in 2008?

i don't have a problem with the call being made at that moment if it's a very obvious foot fault, and if the umpire has been consistent throughout the set (in other words, don't ignore foot faults all set, then focus in on torpe's foot in a big moment)

You can't footfault if linesman is watching you like a hawk. Can't do it, it is that simple. so stand back about 2-3 inches back more. but to call it on Match point when he didn't footfault the entire match is BS. That linesman should be fired or suspended by making up some trumped up excuse.

That was a terrible call by Torpegaard, but you’re just deflecting. Your guy has blatantly cheated multiple times. Just ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure jerryjones isn't a Wake fan.

Bad call by Torp, but who cares? Just move on. All the Wake fans at the doubles championship were cheering for Ohio State because Torp and Joyce seem like good guys and great players. The Wake players, fans, coaches, etc. didn't flock to social media to complain about the call - they just moved on and kept winning matches. Whereas the UNC fans and players spent days complaining on social media about a bad call by Gojo - it was a pretty pathetic and petty display by UNC.

you really find it surprising that fans of a team/player who lost a match (regardless of whether or not it was due to the bad calls) flocked to social media more than the fans of a team/player who won a match in spite of the bad calls?

if so, then you need a reality check.

Are you referring to me? If so, I don't blame UNC Tennis Twitter at all. I blame the UNC fans, and particularly the previous players, for suggesting Wake makes more bad calls than other teams. It reeked of jealously as Wake was dominating the NCAAs.

and if blumberg made the same call and blumberg wound up winning the match (regardless of if the call had any effect) then wake fans would have been whining as well.

Wrong. Had Torp beat Petros after making that bad call that was captured on video there would have been very little, if anything, written. There certainly would not have been previous Wake players whining on social media about OSU making more bad calls than other teams.

I saw some UNC people tagging Noah Rubin about the video. As if he should come out and speak against his old coach and program. That was a little pretentious.

As a Wake alum I'm all ears for potential changes to make college tennis a better game & I think that's what we're all after. Would adding a second official added for each court make sense? Would it be possible to synch up the men's and women's match schedules during conference play & help ease travel costs and just bring enough officials for 2 matches to one site for the day and have them double up? Yes this increases expenses but it at least saves on travel costs and might be a cheaper alternative than adding Playsight to every single court on major college campuses.
