Olympic Games Tokyo

Nahh I just bet on him to win 2-0 in this match so am watching more attentively than usual. I do prefer the Big 3 in general to everyone else though.

It's less nervousness and more a feeling that, while he has the clutch serving and volleying, the strategy of elevating for big points is sort of masking what is a real decline in his play. Like you can tell his groundstrokes and movement are not at pre-2016 levels or even 2019 levels really. I think he would definitely be exposed by an aggressive player who knew what they were doing but no one has shown the consistency to do this in the 2021 field.
Of course not everything is better than back then. But if you say other parts of his game are masking his decline in other departments, then we are actually on the same side. Because if it’s possible to mask it, then the improvements are outshining the decline and he is a more effective player overall. And if so, we can say he’s at his peak right now.

I also prefer all of the Big 3 over any “Next Gen” players and will be unhappy if any of them retires. Deep inside of course I still want Federer to come out on top, but I have accepted it won’t happen anymore.

I thought so too. Maybe umpire considered it a grunt which extends into celebration.
Saw it on the highlights again. He went with the long AAAA and after EXTREMELY brief pause proceeded with another AAAAAAA just after the ball left Struff's racket. Not the smoothest extension from him, but seeing Novak's and Leonard's positions and speed of the shot it was difficult, but barely possible to cause a hindrance. Would probably need to start grunting just before the volley, as extension in that situation probably wouldn’t be enough.

I know he technically qualifies for that reason. It is just kind of dumb. He has seemingly never even lived in Japan. He's a New Zealander who is more American than Japanese.
Just because he went to a US university doesn't mean he's more American than Japanese. You don't think his Mum taught him anything? How do you know he didn't spend a lot of time in Japan over his lifetime on holidays, seeing family etc? I'm sure he feels Japanese! Question maybe should be why so many players brought up in NZ don't want to play under that flag? I've not read into it but I wonder if it's funding/national tennis structure?

Looking at the draws, I can easily see the top 4 chalking it up to the semifinals. Kind of boring, inevitable feel about these Olympics.

Interesting matchups tonight:

Tiafoe - Tsitsipas rematch  will be very intriguing
Karatsev - Chardy
Humbert - Kecmanovic will actually be a good watch imo

It looks like the roof on the centre court (Tsitsipas Tiafoe) is closed?
And I'm currently on court 4 for Chardy/Karatsev. I can read "delayed due to weather, competition will not start before 11:30".

But it isn't raining at all in Tokyo. Anyone has informations?

It's rain at Ariake in the morning and will be cloudy in the afternoon.

I read somewhere the courts played slow but now I watch Tsitsipas Tiafoe and this is the fastest conditions I have seen in a long time seems to be faster than Wimbledon even. Correct me if I am wrong. Nevertheless I enjoy it.

It's lightning fast out there at Ariake Colosseum.

I also had this impression. But I think the camera position is also part of it.

Tiafoe really improved his volleys from what I remember. Recall watching a match from him years back and seeing every volley go into the net.

Tiafoe’s serve is still his biggest liability. Nowhere close to hitting 200 km/h on the gun. Tsitsi should be picking it apart honestly.

Djokovic with 8 aces in 4 service games lol

again this is Struff’s issue he doesn’t have mobility. That being said this S&V game is actually giving Novak more trouble than I thought. Prime Pete to destroy Djokovic confirmed? It seems so
I'm pretty sure you were just being facetious, but of course the problem with these types of hypothetical matchups and why I dislike engaging in them is that if Djokovic had to regularly face serve and volleyers, his style would have developed differently. The same goes for other players. Djokovic adapted his game to beat prime Federer and Nadal, not prime Sampras, because he didn't have to. That does not mean he couldn't have though.

Osaka lost first set 1-6. Vondrousova out played Osaka with 2 early breaks. Osaka serve was around 140 km/h vs 170 kmh of previous 2 rounds and with lots of UEs.

Osaka was knocked out by Vondrousova 1-6, 4-6. Osaka had a chance at the beginning of the second set when she took an early break but she could not keep the momentum, lost a break after that and eventually got broken again in the final game of the match.

Osaka currently losing 5:1 to Vondrousova (whoever she is)....
She made the French Open final one year and lost to Barty. Hasn't really been relevant since then though.

Also, think this thread is mainly for the men's event. We have separate thread for the women's.

Vondrousova had an injury and has surgery and did rehab. That took around a year off the Tour! So, she is relevant now, right?
