Olympic Games Tokyo

Third Serve

Seems like it's at 4-4 in the second set for Med. Good on him for breaking back to prevent the set from going awry. Now he's gotta consolidate.

I almost feel bad for Tommy Paul. Karatsev is hitting bazookas from the baseline, totally dominant in rallies.

Musetti out. Beaten by Milman pretty clean. Medvedev through. Not a bad tournament so far. Pretty decent tennis on display in Tokyo.

The court looks incredibly hot. Apparently 32 Celsius (90 F) and sweltering heat. Players are visibly sweating on the court.

Yes, Bublik was literally taking a shower from the ice cold water bottles during breaks. Looks so hot and humid.

Can someone tell me how much heat is too much for tennis players?

I mean HCs get heated up to about 6-7 degrees more than the actual temperatures. Tokyo is about to clock 32-36 degrees peak daily. Not ideal for those who aren't used to such heat

Well, the presumptive GOAT has had to retire due to heat exhaustion, and is about to go on court right now, so..

We've got shade creeping up the court, making it hard to watch the far end

Weird seeing a mens doubles match with 4 straight breaks of serve to start. Khach/Bweh vs Rampras/Tiafoe. Expecting the Russians to win though.

Menezes served for the match vs The Red Hot Cilic Pepper and got to deuce before pancaking to a 5-7 loss and a third set.

In the singles draws on both the mens and womens sides, I don't think there has been a single upset today. Many matches seemed 50/50, but it seems the top players have all advanced unscathed.

It took Marin Cilic 12 match points, yes TWELVE match points to defeat his opponent ranked #217.

He led 5-0 40-0 in the final set and yet blew 12 match points, ended up winning it 7-6 (9-7) in the tiebreaker.
Actually he blew 10 MP, and converted in his 11th.
His opponent blew 1 MP himself while serving for the match at 6-5 in the third set.
In the second set, his opponent had served for the match leading 5-4.

Lol, I just saw the end of Cilic's match. Amazing. From 5-0 0-40 to 5-6 40-30, what a choke. Menezes also served twice for the match and had a match point on his serve. Cilic concluded the 3rd set tie-break on his 11th match point. If Cilic lost this one it's of been the biggest choke ever.

Cilic/Carreno-Busta, interesting second round if Cilic finds his game.

BTW: Still no mixed doubles draw, I wonder when it will be released.

It will be survival of the fittest.

I think this is interesting:

"When Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympics in 1964, they were moved to October specifically to avoid the peak heat of July and August. A half a century later, as climate change literally boils the planet alive, we're coming off the hottest decade on record. But the IOC decided to keep the Olympics on their normal summer schedule because it'll collect more in American broadcast fees during this part of the calendar."

Am personally fine with skate boarding being included it does require hours of physical training after all, but draw the line when gaming is called e-sports (it definitely ain't a sport) and is a medal event with mainstream sports.

It was a medal event at the Asian games. (n)
