Olympic Hockey Thread

It's kind of ridiculous that the Canadians were allowed to cheat at curling.
Apparently, the Curling authority does not use replay or video evidence to handle disputes but relies on
judges who may not be in position to see a double touch. That being said, it's curling and I care less about that than I do Hockey :)

@Lleytonstation would have trolled us like he trolled my Finnish Stars

It is funny to see people still having attachments to their country's teams in order to show off patriotism or something.

The players are just that - players - and nothing more. They are not "doing" anything for their country - they were born there and took the opportunities that came their way.
Do you not have any attachments?

There were similar rules arguments in golf for many years.

He’s an idiot, don’t give him the attention. He’ll move on to the other 50 threads in this forum.

Of course. Sports is entertainment and I like to appreciate skill, rather than the player or the team.
It is very, very difficult to not get attached to sports, the players, the teams etc. It’s called passion. We are emotional beings after all and not robots.

I used to be emotionally involved in Federer-Nadal matches. I remember being in the pro shop of a resort watching one of their finals along with a crowd, and my feelings afterwards.

Then I realized that Federer/Nadal does not give a rodent's posterior about me, and that people had gone through the same emotions with Sampras/Agassi and other rivalries long before I was born.

I watch racket sports only to see if I can pick up something useful to ME.

Sometimes I will be watching a USTA league match at my club, intensely focused on a guy footfaulting, wondering if it could happen to me, when someone who just got in will ask me whether our home team is winning. I would say that I don't know and they would look at me with suspicion.

Gordie Howe, Guy LaFleur, Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky...
Who is your favourite Canadian?
Canada has ruled over the hockey world — proud, disciplined and unstoppable.

Meanwhile, across the border, America celebrates the underdog, and the heroes are kindly welcomed home.

McDavid is so unlucky with all of his missed Stanley Cups and now the Olympic Gold! He seems to be the Andy Roddick of hockey, lol!
I was not unhappy about the recent loss, Canada has been dominant in Olympic ice hockey for so long, it is good to get someone else with the gold.

It was getting boring.

The first hockey player in History to be awarded the Medal Of Freedom.
Many find it to be inappropriate.

This award is given basically at the discretion of the POTUS and to a wide variety of people (including non citizens — the award is obviously not tied to being a “patriot”) and has been given to athletes before (including four golfers ). If Sir Andy can be knighted this guy can receive this civilian honor. There’s nothing inappropriate about it.

As far as the helicopter pilot who was shot multiple times but was able to keep flying his mission. That guy absolutely deserves the Medal of Honor. If not for this guys heroic behavior we may have had a repeat of the disaster in the dessert made possible by your fav Peanut Farmer.

Carter was not corrupt and did not lead America into complete lawlessness.

Gentle Readers should kindly note that the true Cinderella hockey story was the 1980 team whch was composed of U.S. amateurs who somehow defeated a team of USSR professionals!

I don’t think emotions work that way. A lot of the times it’s a one way street. People love cats but they don’t give a damn about people, for example.

We choose to get attached to people, animals, things etc. - whether we get the same affection back or not is irrelevant.

Maybe people are better off not caring so much, especially if it causes too much pain and suffering, but then again we would be living in a self-centred world.

Growing up in Buffalo, we always understood Canada was a hockey mecca. For me, Howe and Orr were a bit too early, and kinda the same with Esposito, but LaFluer I remember, and then, of course Grezky was prominent in my lifetime. That said, as a Sabres fan, Perreault (though still VERY early in my lifetime) would I guess be considered my fave....because the Sabres. (y)

I did not have love or affection for Federer or Nadal. I was just rooting for Federer because he was the old guy with the 1 handed backhand.

Your post presumes Gentler Readers thought this win a "Cinderella story." Only Gentle Confused Readers such as yourself may have. They were the two top teams. The 1980 game was a truly massive upset.

Canada looks unstoppable, especially with the way the top lines are clicking. Seeing a prospect like tij iginla tear it up in the WHL lately just shows how deep that Canadian talent pool goes for the future.
