All credit for this post goes to the user named simi; I am just reposting what was posted in the other thread in the 'Odds and Ends' section. Can I hear Federer and the golden slam? I know just a grand slam is a tough feat without even factoring in that Federer will be 30 years of age by the time these Olympics come around.

from a weekly e-mail I get from the ITF called "This Week in the ITF"

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) congratulates London on being
awarded the 2012 Olympic Games.

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti, who was in Singapore representing the
ITF as the voting took place, commented: "My congratulations to London on
their selection to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The five candidate cities
put forward excellent bids, all of which offered tennis an outstanding
platform.

"The 2012 Olympic Tennis Event will be played on the historic courts of
Wimbledon, the first time that the Olympic Tennis Event has been played on
grass since 1920 Antwerp and the second time that the All England Club has
hosted the event (190.

"We welcome the opportunity to work with the London Olympic Organising
Committee and are confident that the 2012 Olympic Tennis Event will be
outstanding."

My only thought is that the groundskeepers wil be quite busy in July getting the courts ready after the tournament and before the Olympics. Betcha the warm-ups after the FO and Newport will have a larger than normal amount of pros trying to play. Heck, we may even see more Spaniards than normal at Wimbledon in 2012.

How do they decide what type of surface tennis is played on at the olympics or is it just whatever surface the home country uses?

How about this one

The same player wins both the annual Wimbledon Title and the Olympic gold on Centre Court in the same year? Gonna' be fun! The roof should be done by then.

Wow, the courts are going to be ragged hosting these two events in such a small time span...The baselines might turn to dirt!

Federer should finally get the goal that got away from him last year. Unless someone improves a whole lot or he just falls over and gets a serieous injury he's got it in the bag.

the courts will for sure take a beating. i think that it is the case that whatever the country that is hosting the games are choice the surface.

this is a direct quote from the olympic website
"A smooth, level playing area, covered with grass, clay or an artificial surface. "

It's now 2005, 2012 is 7 years away. I doubt Federer will still be playing at his best in 7 years time. If he is his achievements by then could be seismic.

They said the feature courts anyway get replaced as soon as W. ends.

Shouldn't be an issue--new sod.
