Djokovic in 2.

I don't remember Davidovic well enough, but he has an underwhelming serve, no particularly big forehand but a deceptively big backhand IIRC?

Fokina got pasted 6-2,6-1 in Rome this year.

He's actually a pretty fiery player but just played a 3 hr match with Millman. I don't think he has anything that will get Djokovic out of 2nd gear really.

2nd gear Djokovic best Djokovic tbh. I like the economical style of the first 2 matches.

Fokina had an absolutely stunning match with Ruud at RG .

Guy thrives on passion. However this might not be enough, as he played a long match today. Novak in 2.Good for him as he avoids long matches in heat.

It’s funny because I think 2nd gear Djokovic was actually the missing piece to a lot of his struggles in 2012-14. He didn’t seem to know how to pace himself or when to let the opponent sort of dictate in stretches. Thus you’d end up with a Djokovic just hitting 400 very hard groundstrokes per match and never approaching the net, and by the SFs and Fs it was clear he had already played his best tennis.
USO 12, USO 14, WB 13, FO 14 all spring to mind.

I think to truly trouble today’s Djokovic you have to get him off balance somehow. Either with exceptional returning, serving, power on neutral groundstrokes, or daring and variety. For all the sh*t Musetti got he had a ton of confidence to hit with angles and go for outrageous winners in a varied fashion. That wasn’t just a bad Djokovic in that match. You must disrupt him, that has to be your main goal going into the match, throw him off.

There are just so few players who can do this, and I don’t think Fokina is one of them. They’ll trade some cool rallies but then Djokovic will get into one of AdF’s service games and it’s all she wrote.

I think Musetti dominated the backhand crosscourt rallies, which do favor one handed backhnads especially on clay. Also Musetti is already exceptional at the fun hollywood points where Djoko will normally beat most nextgenners. But mostly in those first two sets Djokovic' forehand was garbage.

Davidovich Fokina had a good chance to finish his match vs Millman in 2 when he took the first set and Millman got an ankle injury in the second set, but he slipped it away and had to go to the decider.

The #16 seed and he is still a huge 12 to 1 underdog.
What a pathetic tournament!

Fokina is actually not bad, not mug level. His game is unoriginal but there’s an undeniable fire to it. I think we’ll see him in more and more QFs/SFs as time goes by, his weak serve will always be an issue though. But his speed and groundstrokes are good and he competes on every point. Probably will be a fixture in the top 20 soon.

Yeah I think he will get better all the time. He’s only 22 and improving more on hard courts now. He was seen as a clay specialist at first but he can play on hard better too.

Hmm Djokovic won the first set. But he can be sharper.

A rising trend that I am seeing here and at Wimbledon is that hard hitting to Novak's BH is yielding errors from him. That is a very new thing.

2 winners from Novak in that set, lol. Elite tennis.

(In all seriousness I think that says positive things about Fokina’s coverage as there were a lot of forced errors)

As long as he finds a way to win that’s what matters. Get through saving energy and can try improve things for later rounds. I agree if he gets to Zverev he will want to do things sharper but it’s all about navigating through for Novak.

I just hope he keeps getting these late starts if he advances today and preferably the whole tournament gets moved to evening/night matches.

I genuinely think he as world no1 and Med as # 2 should be scheduled later as per their request.

HOWEVER, if they do have a roof, why let anybody on CC suffer? Every player men and women are complaining about the conditions.

He’s guaranteed to have the late starts given he’s the bigger star.

Djok is so ready this season. Unreal. He will walk into NY and they will have to hand the trophy to him without a fight. GCYGS

Djokovic is sooooooo sly these days. Fokina is outmatching him in rallies so he throws in a serve and volley on a important point. This guy has layers upon layers to his game.
