Yeah you make a good point about the yips though. Is it any coincidence that the second Djokovic’s serve started to faulter and Zverev got break points, Zverev’s own service games improved? With him if he feels he can get into the opponent’s service games it puts less pressure on himself to hold.

Against a guy like Khachanov who has such a big serve+1 combo Zverev is going to be under a lot of pressure to hold his serve— and that leads to Zverev DFing and beating himself usually. Interested to see what happens
I’m not sure I like the scenario you’re proposing but yeah, it is plausible. :)

Lol, it’s more about trying to accurately predict what causes the mental walkabouts that plague Zverev. I don’t think there’s one single explanation but pressure to hold serve is a big one.

Isnt it interesting how few tiebreaks he plays? He almost never plays a 6 hold to 6 hold set. I think that’s a relevant stat in assessing him.

Agree. On a bad day he double faults so much that he actually loses because of his serve. When the serve is working, he becomes a servebot and the serve wins him matches even when struggling with other technical issues.

The strange thing about Zverev is that he often seems nervous and finds no balance between being hasty and passive when there is literally nothing at stake. But then against the biggest names (like the Big 3) and on the biggest occasion (like today) he seems calm and tends to do the right things.

Except for the second half of his slam final

Is anyone watching this already planning their Zod choke ****poasts? All these impressive CC FHs... all this terrible play by Hatchetjob... and yet it's all going to mean nothing at all.

The Stone Roses playing at the changeover. Nice.

Important hold there by Zod. Importantly no DFs so far.

I am having visions of him going on a Djoko ‘11 style domination of 2022 and ruining the slam race, and it’s both hilarious and slightly plausible.

Serve - fantastic
Return - fantastic
And everything in between.. If he continues playing at this level - Sky is the limit..

Lol at these players claiming OG was the dream all along :-D  :giggle:
Don’t joke about this, it isn’t opportunistic. Sascha Zverev already said this before the tournament. And Mischa confirmed it yesterday in a TV studio that Sascha’s biggest dream was always the Olympics over any Slam. And he wasn’t even asked to confirm anything, but he started the topic himself.

Maybe so but I'm still not sure I believe him.

Everyone grows up watching the Olympics. Not everyone grows up watching tennis slams. Olympic Gold is bigger than a slam. Look at Monica Puig. That did so much more for Puerto Rico than say Ostapenko winning the French Open. Olympic Gold is just everything.

Ok. I still think it’s funny though.
