ON (The Roger) tennis shoes

Is TW going to playtest these? Has anyone tried them? They look comfortable and well designed with a shape that will fit many foot types.

There are no dedicated ON tennis shoes as of now. There are tennis inspired lifestyle shoes in the style of Stan Smiths and Borg Elites.

I have played briefly in "The Roger": they are not performance oriented shoes, but a very light hitting while goofing around is possible. Not for serious tennis. That would destroy them in no time: they are not stable and supportive enough for full bore movement (especially side to side).

Lol. It is a very niche market. Only a complete NinnyHammer with money to burn is going to waste over $375 on these shoes (limited production so they were going on eeeBay for over $1000 last I checked in 2020).

The whole notion of Federer hawking these obscenely priced shoes during a global pandemic and global recession is so extremely offensive.

At today's exchange rates these shoes sell for 240 USD, so you are quite stressed about something that isn't even true. The prices you quote are for the "limited" run, which was just the first release of the exact same shoe that is available currently.

Never Mind my question, just saw that you had already answered this. $1000+ for a pair of shoes is ridiculous, no matter how limited edition they are.

I'll admit I'm not part of the whole expensive sneaker subculture, but I'm not really offended by the overpriced ON shoes. Isn't ON shoes aimed at wealthy people who want very expensive shoes?

Isn't Nike, who markets overpriced shoes to the poor, a worse actor? Especially now that Nike has been implicated in lobbying efforts to keep governments from punishing China for using slave labor and wiping out ethnic minority groups.

Nike is selling their premium running shoes above the price of the ON offerings, so it is either every company is selling overpriced shoes, or there are highly priced shoes and then there are overpriced shoes (not ONs).

The reactions of the people on those prices are amusing. As if they are not aware what is being sold on the market and for how much. Unlike most lifestyle shoes the ON Roger offering has some running tech in them, so they are literally the comfort of a running shoe in a lifestyle shoe packaging. Last time I bought such a shoe (a limited edition Stan Smiths with Boost sole) it was 3 years ago, and the price was very similar.

In short, ON the Roger are not very expensive for what they are, and now there is even a more "budget" oriented version for approximately 150USD. A price of a pair of top of the line tennis shoe, which will get destroyed in a matter of months, yet people do not bat an eyelid paying those prices.

Anyone knows the difference between the „advantage“ and the „centre court“? Seems like a second line of The Rogers, priced a little cheaper...

Textured "vegan" leather of the CC vs smooth for the Advantage, reinforced forefoot for CC vs more sleek and less substantial "toecap".

Basically the Advantage is the same technologies with a slightly less elaborate design, so if you prefer the ultra-sleek look the Advantage is better. The CC is more "old school" look (but both are unmistakably modern).

I get ON is trying to maximize the name, but come on! They now have 3 shoes, which honestly all look the same! (Centre Court, Advantage and Clubhouse). I can't tell if they are making meaningful updates or are just lazy design wise?

Looking at all 3 I see some color differences but nothing that warrants the different pricing - I have not tried them on or anything but this seems like some lazy design/marketing going on right now.

They don't look the same.

If ON have given Federer exactly what he wants and just reverse-engineered the Nikes he's been using for years, these could sell very well.

I find this more offensive:
Someone that regularly paid about $250 a month for electricity, suddenly getting charged almost $10,000 for a couple days.

They are offering payment plans as a concession...

They look amazing! They have a magnetic ON logo that covers the laces with an R. Under them. Very cool looking.

They were paying $250 and laughing at us "fools" paying $500 monthly on fixed rate plans.

They look pretty good in that video. They look like what he's been using for years just with a more ON style.

Not sure Federer is a smart businessman since his early contract was one of worst contracts in the history in my opinion.
In his prime time, he contracted without a management and Nike took the advantage.
I am sure Mirka is the person who orchestrate everything now ^____^

Really, I didn't know. Well he got a massive contract from Uniqlo. Now his own brand ON running in partnership with ON running company?

I tried on a pair of these "casual" sneakers. I am not impressed at all. They are kinda stiff out of the box and the cushioning didn't really impress me.
Sales guy said they break in after awhile, but I never buy shoes if they're not comfortable out of the box.
I told the sales guy that if I were Roger Federer, I wouldn't wear these shoes.

I don’t exactly remember the year but he contracted with Nike (I think it was about 5 year deal) for 1 million dollar per a year and he signed the contract without an agent then he got the 10 million dollar per a year/10 year deal from Nike.
Now 30million per a year/10 year deal with uniqlo.

I bought the grey Clubhouse, wasn‘t impressed at first sight. After 3 days now, I really like the lightweight, cushioning and feel of them. They‘re kinda stiff but offer a lot of stability. I think they‘re more of a every day/office shoe, where you can wear them 10-12 hours without getting sore, tired feet...
Gonna buy a pair of advantage too...

Cool. So they are custom lasted.

Yup, pretty customary in the signature basketball shoe world but definitely not so much for tennis. Actually I can’t think of any performance tennis shoe prior to this that bears the player’s name. Everyone “knew” that the Air Tech Challenge were Agassi’s shoes but Nike didn’t call them the Air Agassi. If any player deserves an actual signature tennis shoe, it would be Roger. Really excited for these; hope they do a general release to the public!

Those are two different things: the signature line and the custom last.

Signature line may or may not be developed around a player's preferences.

Custom last is just how the shoes for a particular player are created, if they are not off the rack. A technology that is not nearly as complicated as some people think. There are multiple ways of creating a custom last, and 3D scan of the foot is getting ubiquitous on a consumer level as well. With the help of 3D printing it is getting also exceedingly cheap to do it.

Every sports shoes company is able to create such shoes, and custom lasts have been known in tennis for well over a decade (literally all top players of today get custom lasted shoes, if they ask for them).

About that shoe, it looks like Federer was heavily involved in its development, not because of the photos that are released (such things can be used for promotion without actually happening as advertised), but because ON has no previous experience with tennis shoes, and so they had to create such from the ground up: definitely a challenge where they would need an input from him, not only about the testing of the shoe, but also about what features would be presented in a tennis shoe. The positives from that are that, if they have nailed it, we shall see a shoe designed for efficient and at the same time very aggressive movement - like Fed's. I expect it to me middle of the road as weight, nearly flat as a heel to toes drop (so less than 10 mm drop), above average cushioning, with excellent energy return (with or without a true carbon speedboard), good heel and lateral support, and possibly slightly wider at the front than at the arch and the heel.

ON definitely know what they are doing. The CC shoe is exceedingly comfortable, and they have managed to create a distinctive line with several models with subtle but big enough differences in a matter of year. Their hints tell me that they already have a strategy about their tennis shoe, so I expect it that it gets released sooner rather than later (they do need to hurry up, as Federer's time on the Pro Tour is limited).

Very, very Germanic in its design. It looks more robotic than any adidas or puma shoe I remember. There is only one fluid line on the entire shoe. Hope they can remedy that next time.

Which "germanic" heritage do you refer to when you say that it links to "robotic"?

What's the point of a signature shoe if the player's input isn't a factor? I can't think of a single signature line in basketball (e.g. Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, KD, etc.) where the shoe is not constructed from a custom last based on the shape of an athlete's foot. Moreover, the signature shoes built from these lasts are the same ones that are sold to the public. How do I know this? KD's feet are on the very narrow side and his sneakers reflect that; many people with average width and wider do not find KD's signature shoes comfortable. On the other end of the spectrum, LeBron's sneakers have a wider base and heel, so people with narrow feet (like myself) find them too spacious and clunky. It's not trivial to build an athletic shoe around a custom last. Not only does the shape of the midsole have to match, but all the other pieces of the upper (heel counter, tongue, toe box, panels, etc.) needs to be the correct shape; there's a lot of prototyping and testing to get all the elements right. If you change the last, you will need to change all the other elements as well, so I'm very much in doubt towards your claim that "literally all top players of today get custom lasted shoes, if they ask for them." Also I'd like to see cited evidence for your claim that "custom lasts have been known in tennis for well over a decade." A custom last is not as simple as a custom orthotic.
