One year too many

Roger Federer’s 2017 resurgence was near perfect. 2 grand slams and 3 masters after several barren years and knee surgery. He finally managed to consistently beat Rafa. He may have skipped a huge chunk of the year, had a back issue through the US Open swing, and had a flat WTF, but his 2017 was still a brilliant season.

2018 started well enough with a record 20th grand slam, but something wasn’t quite right. His level wasn’t as high as 2017. His serve wasn’t as clinical, groundstrokes weren't as penetrating, and his return was off. No matter, his name was yet again on the trophy. Rotterdam, the same story. Hardly vintage Roger but still enough to win.

The sunshine double, two tournaments Roger won in 2017. Indian Wells was a foul tempered final from Roger, he no longer looked relaxed on court and Delpo deservedly won his first masters. Miami, poor returning and too many clumsy errors led to a surprise defeat to the Kokkinakis. Again, Roger was not looking happy on court. Clearly something is very different to the relaxed Roger from 2017. Roger wouldn’t play again for several months.

Stuttgart was a good tournament for Roger, many difficult matches against strong opposition. A hard earned title and an improvement over his 2017 loss to Tommy Haas. He was clearly rusty and dropped a few sets but that was to be expected. What wasn’t expected was that he wouldn’t be able to shake off the rust. Halle was a disappointment. Unable to cope with Coric of all people in the final. Clearly Roger’s return game on fast courts has declined with age, making his 2017 Wimbledon all the more impressive. However, this wasn’t the first time Roger had a hard time before Wimbledon. So many times before he just turns up to SW19 and waltzes through his draw.

Wimbledon started well enough for Roger, with 4 straight sets wins. He hadn’t been truly tested, but everything looked ok. Then came Anderson. Roger capitalised on a nervous start from Anderson and raced through the first set and began the 2nd in dominant fashion. Only once Anderson was a break down in the 2nd did he start to produce his best tennis. He forced the set to a tie break which Roger narrowly won. However, the momentum was now with Anderson. Uncharacteristically Roger gave in to the pressure and was broken late in the 3rd, and never looked like breaking Anderson in the 4th. The 5th set was an epic, but the fast courts on court 1 highlighted Roger’s declined return game. Anderson took the 5th 13-11 and Roger was out of Wimbledon. Clearly Roger is no longer the force on grass he once was and medium-fast hard court now favours his abilities. Cincinnati would surely be his next title.

Once again, Roger’s return game was horrible in Cincinnati. A recurring theme this year. Understandably at his age his reactions will be slower, but this has been a problem even on slower courts this year. Rain in Cincinnati forced Roger to play two matches in a day, including a late battle with Stan Wawrinka. Roger came through the tests to face his old foe, Novak Djokovic. The final was Federer’s worst match post surgery. Nerves played a huge part as Roger choked at every available moment. He was terrible at saving and at converting break points. His return numbers were quite frankly atrocious. His own serve was way below par. He was conservative when he needs to be aggressive. He couldn’t compete.

I never gave up hoping for one last slam from Roger, I always kept believing he had one more left to win. However, it’s now obvious that his game, returning in particular, is not at a high enough level. His backhand had t been as potent this year, and his slice hasn’t been as good with the 97. His serves are no longer accurate and his serve is becoming easier to read. It’s time to retire. By 2019 his return will be even worse and he will struggle even at the Australian Open which is now his best tournament. Roger should play until Basel this year and go out with a bang, winning his home tournament.

I have been a Roger fan my whole life, but I’ve seen enough now. I don’t want to see a Hewitt style decline, I want to see my hero go out while he’s still near the top.

Wow so harsh!

Some Fed fans are savage on him - this year he has won AO, Rotterdam, Stuttgart and made the finals of Hall & Cincinnatti. That is a great year so far at any age.
Success and form are relative. By the standard of almost any other player Roger has had a good year. But this is the GOAT we are talking about. And even when he’s won titles he’s still not looked that good, line many other occasions his reputation has won him matches. So many players lose to the big three due to fear and nerves. Roger has nearly lost that fear factor, while Nadal still has it and Djokovic is rapidly regaining it.

That's the thing. He needs more and more outside help. I'm not sad that he lost, I'm sad that he hasn't played well for a while.

And no Stuttgart doesn't count.

Yeh he probably needs some help but he could get it, not sure Novak is fully back in a rhythm. You dont know what to expect with Rafa off clay. Roger is still solidly the 3rd favorite at worst for slams off clay imo which gives him a decent shot (maybe 1 in 4 or 1 in 5) until his level really deteriorated beyond repair, which hasnt occurred yet despite not playing well.

Rafa off clay looks like he is playing at a very high level TBH

AO quarter final - injury withdrawal (yes, a zoning Cilic may have beaten him anyway but no shame in that)
Wimby semi
Canada champion

and is the defending champ going into the US Open. There is no doubt that Djoker & Rafa are the two favourites.

I assume Fed will never win another tournament and I accept it (I'm probably wrong, might not be). After Wimbledon last year, many of his fan base said (with straight faces), "he'll win 120 tournaments!" The fire isn't there and hasn't been since Wimbledon 2017. Once the Genie is out of the bottle, it's hard to get it back in. He's just not there anymore, either physically or mentally.

I am not complaining, anything after 2017 was icing on the opulent Fed cake! :)

You're crazy. Novak came close to losing a few times in this tournament and had he, Roger likely wins the title. Have a little damn faith. There are worse things in tennis than losing a final to Novak. Roger is still near the top of the game.

I agree with you but Im saying its not a lock the way it was years past that they would most likely make the finals like in 2011 for example.

He won a major in 2018. Some of you people just have impossible expectations.
Some Fed fans want him to go out on top, as in 2017.
This Roger has not the upper hand against Rafa and Nole. Should Roger play those, today he would most probably lose, which is not a shame at 37.
No doubt Roger could comfortably stay in the top ten for a couple of years, but I am with the ones saying to call it quits.

It’s probably selfish of me to want Roger to retire if he’s still loving playing professional tennis, but I still don’t want to see him go out with a miserable decline. I also don’t believe he is particularly enjoying tennis these days, his on court demeaner is pretty surly these days.

lol its so funny to see all these posts from the worst Fed fans. Just is what it is man. Side effect of being GOAT is you get all these bandwagon idiot fans who post drama queen stuff.

Dude's 37 and just lost ONE match to probably the 3rd greatest player ever having a resurgence. FFS some perspective.

Roger should do whatever the F he feels like doing. Fans should be thankful they get to see him play some more.

He should retire. He's done. It's sad and awkward watching him on court now. Even the fans sontd know how to respond when he can't return any serves and gets super grumpy.

It's not fun anymore.

Some fans out there think these guys are machines and should be winning every match they play in. The guys 37 and he's been the second best player in the world over the last 18-20 months now. Also, his 2018 season (so far) is already a season that 99.9% of the league would kill to have.

The first part of a pro's game to deteriorate is, very often, the return.

Federer's serve in 2018 AO was even better than it was in AO 2017. He got something like 46% of his serves unreturned vs Cilic in the final.
He won 94.3% of his service games at the AO (100/106).
His FH was pretty good, he was moving better than he was in 2017, returned as well as he did in AO 2017 when he needed to.
Only his topspin/flat BH wasn't close to what it was in AO 17.
His peaks were higher in AO 17, but he was more erratic as well in AO 2017.

Played well in Rotterdam too -- the Bemelmans and the Dimitrov matches were clinics. Managed to hold off an in-form Kohlscreiber in straights. Lost 1st set to Haase, but streamrolled him after that.

You're crazy...Roger is still near the top of the game.

I'm not the crazy one if you think Roger is at the top of his game. The top of is game is 2004-2007 and IW in 2017. His form in Cincy this week was atrocious from first to last. The only element of is game that was acceptable was his serve prior to the final.

Let the man play and enjoy it while it lasts. Your fanbase is a little too expectant. The fact that Rafa and Fed actually got a chance to pile up slams is in itself something no one expected especially at this stage of their career. It seems to me that Rafa fans are happy he is playing while Fed fans (not all) are grumpy that he isn't playing like 2006.

Ill concede you were right there. I thought Federer would raise his level today but it didn't happen. Pretty disgusted he gave the break of serve right back.

Should have at least had a 3rd set.

He was lucky to even beat Stan, who is obviously a husk of what he used to be.

Federer's serve it always never matters how good it is / form it has been in when it comes to Djokovic..it will get broken. So if he cant return like he used to (which he cant), he'll always be hard pressed to beat him now.

Annoyingly enough, Fred seems to be able to break RAFA but nobody else. Bizarre

Roger can have strong showing in USO and it won't feel like a year too many.

Christ’s sake he’s had a great year so far. 20 slams. So many damn records and yet stuff to complain about for some people. Just enjoy the show. 37 years old. World number two. It won’t last forever. If fed had listened to some people on here he would have been out back in 2013

Never understood the ‘going out on top’ stuff. Not sure why you’d want have that ‘what if’ doubt left in your (and his) mind about winning slams and setting more records, particularly when he gets overtaken. Same thing happened with Borg. I’m pretty sure he wants to at least play Tokyo before even considering retiring.

Their last match was 10 months ago.

Rafa would wipe the floor with him right now.

I agree, Federer would lose to a lot of people right now.

The annoying thing is Djokovic was also vulnerable all week and got taken the distance many times.

Federer just fell completely flat.

But I guess the good news is it was just Cincy. USO hopes aren't looking too great though.

The one who is crazy is the one you responded to. He/she is glorifying Federer now as it's obvious Nadal would come out on top had they met, then s/he can brag about how Nadal beat 'peak' Federer.

Do you remember the USO 2011 when he lost to Novak? “He’s a choke artist and that was his last chance”

Then wimbledon 2012 happend.

Do you remember Wim 14, then Wim 15, then Uso 15, then AO 16? People said it was hist last chance everytime. Then AO 2017 and Wimb 2017 happend. Then 2018 AO again

You’re not a true fan. You only support him when hes winning which is easy fo do.

I’m sure Roger will have his opportunities sooner than you think. And be grateful of all his achievements, he is after all, the GOAT

I’ve been a life long fan of Roger, he’s the player I grew up watching. I supported through all the hard times and never stopped believing in his ability. It wasn’t always fun, with a few bad years and his racket change. However, I still believed he could do well and never stopped enjoying his tennis. 2013 was rough and the ‘15 US Open final was tough to take.

Roger’s on court demeaner is different these days, he seems to just be going through the motions. It’s much harder to enjoy watching a player who just doesn’t seem to want to be there. I could be wrong, and hope that I am, but the magic isn’t there any more. Even if he does get some of the old fire back it won’t halt time, his return game will only get weaker from here. He will need a slower court to return well but he will also struggle to finish off points quickly enough on these courts.

I never have and never would stop supporting Roger. When he’s on court I’m always watching and wanting him to win. But at the same time I don’t want him to become another Hewitt. I want a peRFect ending to the greatest tennis career of all time. Basel last year would have been that perfect ending.
