I hope she has a good 2019. Seems like when a young lady wins their first GS, the expectations to win more has been a demise for some....I hope she can handle the pressure of expectation. If she shows poise like at the U.S Open no problem.

I think Kei is super jealous of her but he knows she will never get as much endorsement as he has
Yeah its definite interesting to see how many endorsements she's getting already. Maybe someone can do a comparison and list all the endorsements Kei has versus Osaka. Kei is huge for Japan Tennis but they never had a really big female super star.

Japanese don't really see her as japanese

She won her first 4 years younger than Sloan though. She's been streaky as a young player. 3-4 majors would be an amazing career though.

I don't understand what this is supposed to mean. Most WTA players already serve with a pinpoint motion, including Serena, Pliskova, Muguruza, Halep, Kerber, Wozniacki. . . In fact, tell me, who in the WTA DOESN'T serve with a pinpoint serve?
Halep, Kerber and Wozniaki are not known for their serves, on the contrary. Lisicki has a wonderful serve motion. Too bad her rankings have fallen.

Ok you need to quit saying that cause we're talking about sponsors not talking about this race thing again.
Osaka can barely even speak Japanese fyi. In Japan that is about as telltale a sign you're not "one of us" as being white. At most levels of sponsorship potential from Japanese companies that will have at least some impact.

My point was not that all those players had great serves, but that they all had pinpoint serve stances regardless of the quality of their serves, which might make you wonder whether the quality of a serve has anything to do with whether it's a pinpoint serve or not.

This is not the case. She is huge in Japan despite lack of language, they seem to be happy to have another big sports star. She is already signed up with the biggest companies like Nissan, Shiseido and got big contract from Adidas Japan (8,5 mil per year) and there are others for sure.

She's been interviewed with GQ and a lot of comments in her IG and twitter are in Hiragana. Sonoya Mizuno has never speak Japanese, grew up in UK and already gain recognition and have brand deal with Shiseido and covered in Vogue Japan.

The issue of mixed race has been raised by Ariana Miyamoto (Miss Universe or something idk), but probably because Japanese doesn't really care about beauty pageant.

She's so cute!
The new, not superstar, but MEGAstar, and she politely asks for permission to ask a question at the end, even though the whole press room has been asking her rapid fire questions. How can she NOT get fans? :D

Never change Naomi-chan!

p.s. uh oh, she just revealed that she shares a trait with one young (18-19yr old?) Roger Federer; match play preferred over practice. Watch out world!

at 30seconds:

Who is the lady with Sascha in her box? Did she change her team, or are the other two on vacation? I saw Abdul training her during the off season, but not the physio.

It's Kristy Stahr, she has been sitting in Naomi's box with Sascha during this tournament. She was a WTA trainer, testified during that Genie liability case. I was wondering if she had replaced Abdul/the physio or it's a temporary arrangement.
Oh I had not noticed. We'll see I guess but probably nothing changed in her camp. I'll see if she shows up at her match today.

she looks very unhappy in Brisbane
Very poor performance today, though commentators said she remains 4th seed going into AO. That's something positive to take away. She's also playing in Sydney next week I think.

She wasn't into the match, her concentration was off perhaps from fatigue who knows but wasn't her best that's for sure.

Ya. Something was definitely bothering her. She had no energy and just spraying shots, opposite of what she said a few days ago about her goal of not pulling the trigger too soon. Can't win much playing like today.

Look on the bright side, she came away with a few wins (great comeback win against her nemesis, Sevastova) and 185 points. AO is the big one, and hopefully she'll be focused for that (she should bc she said she loves playing on the big stage).

Cheer up Naomi-chan!

Something tells me that if today it was against SW she would have been excited to play. A big factor in how she performs is how she feels or how much she's enjoying playing. She didn't really enjoy today so you could see her mind was elsewhere, on top of that many errors which won't add up to a win.

True. Though I think she might be sick today, in some fashion. Aside from the last game when she really tried, there were shots she didn't even 'attempt' to chase, simply watching them sail by. It's fine if they end up too good, but to not even 'try' to chase? Ya, he's probably under the weather. Even her 'outbursts' from poor play, if we can even call them that, were subdued in set2. I'm not giving her an excuse, but it really does look like she's sick today.

She hasn't play well enough to lead me to believe that she can win this AO.

Now it's time to focus and play like she did in last year USO.

R1: Linette
R2: Gavrilova
R3: Azarenka/Hsieh
R4: Sevastova
QF: Svitolina (Mertens/Cibulkova)
SF: Halep or Pliskova
F: Kerber (Wozniacki/Kvitova/Sabalenka)

I hope I did that right. Looks OK until semi-finals but @TMF you're right I don't see her winning this one unless she really focuses and behaves well. @EkVraNaamEnVan I don't see what you're saying with opponents she hates playing, they look alright. If you look at her Indian Wells run, she beat a ton of quality opponents.
