Ha, her and I use the same overgrip and color. At least in that bag check video, she had the yellow Yonex supergrap on her racket. I think she switched to a white one, but still, I rock yellow all day every day! :) It looks pretty good with a mostly black racket.

My bad, my bad. I'm not familiar with cultures and their languages.

Apologies for being a bit pedantic, but you weren't completely wrong. My understanding is that most Haitians speak Haitian Creole, a French-derived language that is NOT mutually intelligible w/ French.

Further complicating matters is that French is taught in school and used by the president and elites.

All that hard work is paying off. Osaka is reportedly set to sign one of the richest sponsorship deals in women’s sport, worth an estimated $14 million ($US10 million) per year.

Her current sponsorship deal with Adidas expires at the end of 2018 and the brand is reportedly moving quickly to ensure she stays.

The monster deal would see Osaka rocket up the list of highest-earning female athletes on the planet. It’s reportedly the third richest sponsorship deal in women’s tennis and the most money Adidas has ever handed to a female tennis player.

Her potential new sponsorship deal and US Open champion prize money of $5.3 million ($US3.8m) would see Osaka jump Caroline Wozniacki into second spot on the 2018 Forbes’ list of highest paid female athletes.

Who are the other two?

what do you mean - pin point?

Pin point serve stance is when both feet come together before bending knees to jump up for the serve. Platform stance is like Roger Federer who keeps feet spread apart. Tsonga, Zverev brothers, Muguruza are examples of pin point stance serves and Shapovalov, Federer, Dimitrov are platform stance serves.

Not to turn this into discussion about mechanics but all serves start out with feet apart but then player chooses whether to jump with both feet apart of close them together before they jump in the air.

So she is taking questions in Japanese and answering in English only ?

I hope the Japanese can relate to that.

11:55 an english question, she smiles. "rena's drama" lol.

When growing up in US, her Mom would speak to her in Japanese at home, so which is why she understands it very well but cannot speak it as well since her environment was English speaking. She can also speak Japanese but does not feel comfortable since its limited. Tennis players are masters at learning multiple languages so no time she'll be fluent.

Its not like umpire would not have caught it anyways.
My point is -- did Sascha immediately realize that it was a point penalty. Was Sascha waiting for SW to make another mistake so it would be a point penalty ??? Not that it would have swung the game.

It took me no time to learn Hiragana and Katagana. Kanji was a bit slower -- I learned about 150. This was back in the 90s when I was going to Tokyo often. Now i've forgotten it all :(

Yeah, she'll pick up. Just has to watch a lot of Japanese movies (there are great ones), and maybe some TV shows -- she does mention one name "Glass" something.

Probably, a second violation constitutes a point penalty then next in line would be a game penalty. She did that herself, I don't think anyone could have made her smash her racquet. When Sascha stood up and pointed he muttered something which meant he was aware of the situation.

Yup. I think she's been trying to learn Japanese and be more fluent. Born in Japan, moved to the U.S. at 3yrs old and lived there since. She can understand a decent amount of Japanese (bc mom?) but can improve. Interestingly, it's bc of this that makes her more relatable/likeable.

We've all heard her speaking Japanese, here is Naomi with a Japanese reporter at around 11 minutes, she sounds really funny and fluent.

I bet she is not letting on how good she is at speaking Japanese until she is absolutely good and ready.

Yes, players have to communicate with practice partners, doubles partners, coaches, therapists, agents, managers etc etc in various languages. They have to be multilingual.

Li Na wasn't good at speaking English at first, but then.... and you know the rest.

I think Naomi is much better at speaking Japanese than she lets on. I think the reason why she doesn't use it so much is because she doesn't want to make mistakes with the cultural meaning of the language. It is one thing to be fluent, it is another to avoid cultural faux pas in the Japanese culture unless you have been bought up in it from a child. Just the way you address yourself to your elders or your peers or people who are younger is a whole system you have to learn.

i've never seen her serve so well like she did in the USO final!

her abbreviated motion can be very powerful, but usually does not produce such accuracy, especially out wide serves to a righty's BH, but she did last saturday!

Yeah, i think i can understand that. When I was there someone told me that there are several (7 or 9) ways of addressing others depending on position or something like that.

In my own language, there are also several levels of respect and you have to know the correct one to use in all forms of language. Not just addressing, but which form of individual verbs you use.

hopefully she will be embraced in Japan now

but yea, @NuBas is being pretty naive in some of his post regarding Naomi and how the Japanese have reacted to her.

What you mean? Talking about the "hafu" thing? Did you not watch the video I posted above? She has Japanese blood and as long as she is Japanese at heart, I don't see why she isn't Japanese. I don't think its how you look, its your behavior, etc.

i wonder if Sacha and Serena ever had anything beyond a professionally relationship?

some of their reactions post professional breakup has seemed quite personal...

Good question. Wonder if anything professionally went wrong that lead to split. Though he was just a sparring partner.

well, i hope so.

i just know that the 'race' thing is a big deal in Japan and other relatively homogenous Asian countries.

Has he spoken out? Aside from the tweets posted here.
He may have signed a confidentiality clause?
