Osaka out of top ten

How is Osaka a 2x Slam winner in the past calendar year lower ranked than Roger Federer :-D
It is curious that the two tours have slightly different "pandemic ranking" rules.
Per Osaka, she's not really a 2x slam winner in the past calendar year, is she?

She won 2021 AO, and did win 2020 USO, but only one in the last calendar year, or in the past 52 weeks.
...
Anyway, I hope she'll return to the tour soon - in better overall health - and ready to contend again.

She's still #8 in the race at the moment, roughly 400 points ahead of the #11 person. And the 4 people right behind her are Jabeur, Mertens, Pavs and Svitolina...not exactly all pinacles of consistency there.

As this time of the year the Race is as big a gauge as the rankings are.

Since there's no way to know how (or if) Osaka's treatment plan is proceeding, her tour rankings will continue to decline. The real question is she'll ever really find the fire to compete once again. Without that, the numbers are meaningless.

this is the norm for #1 players in the WTA to drop down, except for serena..
i guess its harder to stay there than get there

If she doesn't win the AO (assuming she even participates) I think it's doneskies for her career. I mean, for one she certainly doesn't need the money, two her publicity is not predicated on her being actively on tour and three she doesn't seem to prioritize her tennis career in general.

I mean at this point you have to wonder what the arguments are for her to even continue? Unless of course she wins the AO and then therefore it seems to be a super Kyrgios situation where she's just so talented that she can coast on the 2 Slams. In that scenario she plays half the season, likely AO-MI-IW-CA-CIN-USO-TOK-CHI-WTF

It doesn’t really matter. There are more talented players out there who want it more and work harder for it. It was just never meant to be for her. She’s not really dedicated enough.

But everyone was saying Osaka could be a 20 slam champ and break Serena's record after the Australian Open. Why everyone has a complete 180 degree reversal and think she is finished??

Not now, but...how many examples have we seen of millionaire athletes and entertainers eventually filing bankruptcy due to various reasons? I'm not predicting that for her, but...

I disagree. I think that without tennis success, her cachet will drop at a rapid rate. Especially now there are "fresher faces" ready to take her place, without the baggage.

Entire world on suicide watch.
I doubt she's feeling like that. She seems happy outside of tennis, it's just tennis that makes her feel bad.

If you're implying the whole world will be depressed she isn't playing tennis anymore, then no. Most people won't care, they will just get on with their lives.

I know about the millionaire thing but that will take time given current contracts. And by which time she'll be too old for comebacks barring Clijsters work ethic.

As for celebrity status, she's got a lot of check marks. Would take more than a Konta to get her out of the press. She can easily run a talk show ironically enough.
