Osaka playing qualies in Cincinnati

Who knows what the rationale is for the wildcards. They only had four to give. The 56 player draws for these M1000s are tough. If you aren’t ranked in the top 40-50 you are probably going to have to qualify. Good that they are expanding to 96 next year. I was at the tournament today watching Coric and Sonegro play a first round qualifying match. Good tennis - Lorenzo played very well and won in 3 sets. Sucks that Coric can’t even qualify considering he won the event just two years ago.

Organizers employ Wild Cards to sell tickets. It is a capitalistic enterprise.
Hence the local Cincy girl Peyton Stearns receives one.
It could be that organizers do not see her as selling tickets.
She is just not very likeable. The conservative people of the Mid-west do not take kindly to her whiny self-entitled antics.

Good for them. Let Osaka earn it.

Good on her, she has so many haters but she’s not like many of the women and men on tour who are so entitled and would cry foul and whinge about not getting a wildcard or what court she plays on. She just does her job. She’s awesome, just the typical users here who hate her…

She did receive a WC to play the quali here, which means she was not even on the alternate list for the main draw, her ranking was not high enough at the entry deadline, even if someone withdraws, the players on the alternate will move into main draw, not her. And if she had requested a WC after all 4 WCs were allocated, her only option would be a WC for Quali.

I’m pretty sure there’s more to the picture than meets the eye in this instance

Raducanu for example thinks playing qualies is beneath her, she hasn't played a qualifying bracket since her USO win

Though Osaka did get a WC; it was a QWC

Incredibly surprising she didnt get a WC.

She prob annoyed the TD at some point or maybe they dont want to hear her victory speech (understandable actually).

Osaka loses in qualifying R2 to Ashlyn Krueger from the U.S. in 3 sets. She could really stand to make a good run at the USO to get some ranking points. Wonder if her current rank (#90) will get her direct entry or if she will have to quality there or depend on a wildcard. She could still find her way into the draw as a LL. It looks like there are currently 9 qualifier slots in the draw and only 5 qualifier matches today.

Cincy draw is 64? Slam draw is 128. She is ranked in Top 100 so she very likely gets direct entry.
Don't know about Emma. Hopefully U.S. Open organizers give her a wild card.

I think she’s probably grown up and matured a lot since her PR disaster of a few years ago.

Emma should get the entry as she is past champion. Should she not?

Very likely. But it is not automatic. U.S. Open wild cards gives preference to up-and-coming American players.
And there might be reciprocal arrangements with Wimbledon.
It is all political.

NEW YORK -- Former champ Lleyton Hewitt, Robby Ginepri, Ryan Harrison and Donald Young are among the seven players awarded wild cards into the men's draw at the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Tennis Association said Wednesday that the eighth berth would be given to the winner of an eight-player tournament this week in College Park, Md. Steve Johnson, Jack Sock and Julien Benneteau also received wild cards for the Grand Slam tournament that begins Aug. 29.

The 30-year-old Hewitt won the 2001 U.S. Open and 2002 Wimbledon titles, but is ranked 165th after a series of injuries.
He received his entry as part of a reciprocal agreement that allows the USTA to select a player for a wild card into the Australian Open.

The 22-year-old Young, ranked 89th, had to apologize to the USTA in April after he posted an obscenity-laced message on Twitter criticizing the organization for not automatically giving him its wild card into the French Open. Benneteau is France's nominee for the U.S. Open through that reciprocal arrangement.

Pretty sure the WTA has nothing to do with wild card selections

The Cincy Tournament organizers awards wild cards to players that they feel will help promote the tournament.
She apparently does not sell tickets (or else she would have received a WC) and is always a threat to pout and boycott the media.
Not the best wild card candidate.

Cake walk or not she was 18 and now just 21. She reached R4 of Wimby last month as well.
She gets special treatment because she is British. Caroline is White blond Danish has been, who is also a one slam wonder. Osaka is a 4 time slam winner, who is not a White European or American.

Raducanu managed to get her top 100 ranking during Wimbledon, so qualifies by right. She was on the DE list.

Osaka will need a WC because she wasn't top 100 when the entry list was published immediately after Wimbledon.

Evidently not because she didn't get a WC into Toronto or Cincy.

Part of the reason could be that she chose to represent Japan in the Olympics. purely for marketing herself there for personal gain while living in the USA since age 3

i won’t go into her motivations but i keep forgetting shes not american.. if she were american im sure she’d get one. at least she’ll get one for the japan open:)

She's won 4 slams, including one when she was a teen with her idol melting down and whipping the NYC crowd into a frenzy against her. She also gave birth.
She's certainly earned my respect.

there should be a mother clause where you can automatically get in if your a mother but some would prob abuse it and become mothers just to get wild cards

Osaka will get a wild card to USO. Her credentials speak for themselves.
But like Thiem - they’re going to stop if she doesn’t start showing results. She’s had some flashes (smidge away from beating iga on clay in RG) but losing early in Wimbledon and losing in qualies in cincy aren’t great.

She’ll get some wild cards over the next 6-12 months I’m sure to get her ranking back up. But we’ll see.

I think she needs one decent draw and then she can make a deep run

She lost in qualifying so maybe the organizers were correct in not giving her a WC. She's just not as good as she used to be.
I like her, though.

Osaka was out of sport last year and nobody noticed.

She did well for herself, but the time to call it quits is here.
